"The worst Photoshop version release ever" - CS3 Freezing when copying selections

2007-05-16 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

PS CS3 freezes when attempting to copy a selection
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@@.3bc3e082

Photoshop CS3 is now being called by Adobe Forum regulars (the same
people who freely help Adobe users worldwide) "the worst Photoshop
version release ever."

Cheers...

2007-05-16 by Eric Neilsen

Well, I have not had problems with my upgrade from CS Premium to CS3 Design
which has the extended version of PS CS3. I can load custom profiles, have
not had a crash on selections, and find the new print dialog box a long time
in coming. Why the heck they ever made it a two step process to set up
printer and then print was beyond me.

I feel for those that have problems. Keith you seem to be on a personal war
path here.

Why does it seem like a personal war path? It's nothing of the kind.
Adobe shipped a product that wasn't ready. It's gotten lots of publicity
in the trade for the release. If there are problems the RIGHT thing is
for those to be publicized as well.

1) In a fairly operating market, consumers and sellers deserve all the
relevant information.

2) I've got a reputation for reporting the shortcomings of products
that promise X and deliver M instead. That's about honesty and fairness.

3) Adobe and other corporations make HUGE investments in PR and
advertising. The least buyers deserve is people reporting honestly on
the products.

There's no honor in being a consumer who runs around ONLY trumpeting the
positive attributes of every product they buy/use. In fact, doing so is
inherently deceptive - especially in a capitalist economy where
information on the real attributes of products is considered by
economists to be a necessity to proper functioning of the system.

Again, shouldn't this be on a Photoshop forum and not here in a
printing forum? I know we use Photoshop but unless it directly
effects printing with the new CS3, why get into it here? BTW, been
using CS3 to print and having zero issues.

So when someone asks how tobest convert a 16 bit image to an 8 bit
image, I suppose that should be on a Photoshop forum?

Or discussions on sharpening methods?....

Or discussions on which printer is most GENERALLY cost/effective? (as
opposed to just best for B&W printing)

You seem mighty eager to shut down discussion of this... Happen to have
Adobe stock, contracts with Adobe, or any friends at Adobe?

You do realize, that the delete key is the easiest way to ignore posts
that you aren't interested in?

It's much easier than appointing yourself the decider of what content is
relevant. I've known the listowners long enough that if they felt I was
out-of-bounds, I'd know already.

Keith, It seems that way because you cross posted it on several list. I
really can understand being pissed about having software come out that is
less than perfect. You just seem to be REALLY pissed or perhaps it is more
disappointed in Adobe. Do you have access to the numbers of problems vs. the
number of happy trouble free customers? I am all for making sure people
understand the cons as well as the pro with products.

Freezing when copying selections

Well, I have noticed major isssues with PS beginning with CS2 compared to earlier releases
which had always been rock solid. That said and in Adobe's defense, there was a very
generous and long beta program open to all who had CS2 AND there is a feee 30 day trial
for the consumer to base their purchase decision upon with no money out of pocket!

Don,

I don't often call people simply ignorant. But:

1) I'm not an attorney

2) I have a history of getting people back money in the inkjet &
printing biz for products that don't perform as advertised.

That history started with getting thousands of people millions of $ back
around the world when EPSON promised (with the 1280) series, and
endorsed by the PPA, "Professional prints that last as long as
traditional silver prints." EPSON refunded not only the cost of
individual printers, BUT also the cost of consumables (including
expended ones) WORLDWIDE, because of the work Bob Meyer, Laurie Solomon,
others and I did - Bruce Fraser even eventually joined with us. And we
received not a dime...

Try this link from 2000 for starters:
http://www.p-o-v-image.com/epson/links.htm

So, whether or not, you, care to recognize it or like it, those others
and I ARE considered experts in the digital printing field.

3) Large corporations have inordinate advantages in preventing consumers
from learning the failures of their products. Read most of the reviews
at most photo or pc publications - everything is great - especially when
it comes from a MAJOR established player in the field. Right now, Adobe
is the only real digital imaging/editing game in town. They surely
aren't going to publicize shortcomings themselves.

4) That signature line was added so that I didn't have EPSON and other
vendors suing ME when I told the truth about their products. I'm not
making a cent off of this and never did. However, I'm not about to let
lawyers hit me with a SLAPP lawsuit to shut the truth down. (feel free
to google "SLAPP lawsuit")

Part of it was also added because I had a MAJOR institutional client
take sample images that had been emailed and violate copyright.

Don't believe any of the preceding? Ask this list's own Paul Roark.

5) You've seen the posts on here by others confirming personally some
of the problems.

6) Finally, Adobe's new 18 month "ready or not" product cycle and the
new "extended" pricing model (which many discussed here in late April
and early May), means they are forcing more $ from consumers and
breaking the former Adobe paradigm. When you break the paradigm, you
have a responsibility to produce a MUCH BETTER product. (Which is, by
the way, what they promised.)

Instead, they've produced what longtime aficionados and lovers of Adobe
software have called "The Worst Photoshop Release Ever." That's
bass-ackwards and it deserves to be highlighted at least once. Adobe is
using their name and reputation to convince people to buy into an
upgrade that should not have yet shipped. It's a cash-stream play, pure
and simple.

So, please, feel free to blow your ill-informed pontification out of
whatever bodily orifice you prefer.

Oh, and don't you, or didn't you used to, work for a large international
manufacturer of traditional photo supplies as a sales manager? If so,
you wouldn't have any particular axe to grind on behalf of "unfairly
maligned corporations" when they produce products that get poor
reviews? Nah...

Don, if you have a personal issue or wish to continue this, I suggest
you email me offlist. I'm not going to debate this part of it further
onlist.

[Digital BW] Re: "The worst Photoshop version release ever" - CS3 Freezing when copying selections

2007-05-17 by tariqgibranstudio

Talk about attacking the messanger. A "maniac"? I also find the use of the word jihad way
over the top, inappropriate, prejudice and much more offensive than any rant about
Photoshop. Geez, why reply at all if it bothers you so much. I think the moderator should
remove that post.

On Topic, I do beleive that any photoshop printing issues as mentioned below and as they
relate to printing are rightly described here and this is exactly where that discussion
belongs IMHO. For most here, Photoshop is so inseperatable to the process of Digital BW
that any discussion about Photoshop is relevant if it relates to the above. Major issues
would relate.

[Digital BW] Re: "The worst Photoshop version release ever" - CS3 Freezing when copying selections

2007-05-17 by jrschwaller

From Merriam-Webster dictionary...

maniac - "a person characterized by an inordinate or ungovernable
enthusiasm for something"

jihad - "a crusade for a principle or belief" (my note: while "jihad"
can have Islamic religious connections it is not the only use of the
word nor was that how it was used here)

>On Topic, I do beleive that any photoshop printing issues as
mentioned below and as they
> relate to printing are rightly described here

I fully agree, which is why I said, but you apparently missed, the
following: (...I appreciate and have no problem with having a post
informing people that CS3 may have printing problems. However..."

6) Finally, Adobe's new 18 month "ready or not" product cycle and the
new "extended" pricing model (which many discussed here in late April
and early May), means they are forcing more $ from consumers and
breaking the former Adobe paradigm. When you break the paradigm, you

Re: "The worst Photoshop version release ever" - CS3 Freezing

2007-05-17 by Clayton Jones

I'm glad this topic was posted here because it alerted me to a problem
I didn't know existed and I was seriously considering upgrading my CS
to CS3. Now I'll sit back and wait to see what happens.

As for whether this is OT, I think it's fine. There are several
topics related to BW printing (neg scanning and color-to-BW conversion
of digicam files, for example) that appear now and then which are
helpful to forum members. They usually have a short run and then
disappear, which is appropriate. I think this fits in that category
because it's something that could affect most of us.

My thanks to Keith for posting it. He was looking out for our best
interests and it's unfortunate he has to get attacked for it. Please
relax, folks. This will pass.

Regards,
Clayton

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
