I've got two types of Krylon on hand: 'Workable Fixatif' the
description on the can lists uses including Charcoal drawings. Since
Eboni is a carbon product, this sounds like a good choice. The other
Krylon is 'UV-Resistant Clear' - it claims to be glossy although I
doubt it would too glossy on this paper (haven't tried it yet, but don't
want glossy). Its label includes use on photographs, although they
  probably mean conventional, non-digital photos.

I've read on this forum that the only product Epson recommends is
'Premier Art Print Shield' but applying seems like quite a production.
You either apply it with a brush or use a large spray machine - it's
not in aerosol cans yet. Plus, I'm on a deadline and can't wait for it.

So, would either of these Krylon products be ok? The prints are
beautiful, thanks to Clayton Jones for his BO writings. They will be
bound in a book, a photo on one side of the page only, with onion skin
between the pages. I mainly want to protect the prints against
  fingerprints, etc.

  Thanks!

Thanks, Eddie, that's good to know... but please see my previous post.
I will probably order a can but due to time issues I may have to use
the Krylon this time. Do you know anything about this product?

Thanks again,

Paul

Paul..

It will give you some "abrasion protection". but no"water" protection....I'ts also MUCH harder to get an even coat with the Krylon..A protective mask is recommended in either case..

These sprays all decrease the dmax on matte papers. The Lascaux Fixativ
does it the least, but it also has no UV blocker. So, for just physical
protection (like in a book) the Lascaux would be preferable. For my museum
project where very long term display is anticipated, I used Premier Art
Print Shield. The price of the Lascaux has gone up substantially since I
last bought. Jerry's usually has the best price. See
http://www.jerrysartarama.com/art-supply/catalogs/0047147000000

Note that the quality of the nozzle (evenness of spray) is a major variable
with these products. Print Shield and Lascaux have among the best.

Thanks, Paul,

That Lascaux looks excellent... wonder if it got its name from the
caves, where carbon printing has unarguably lasted the kind of time
length we'd all like to emulate.

I tried the Krylon on a reject print and could discern no diminishing
of Dmax... 'course your eye is most likely more discerning than mine.

Anyway, my Premier Art product should arrive in a few days. I
appreciate your delineating the difference between that and the
Lascaux... they each have their place apparently.

Is that 3MK process doable on an R220?

Regards,

Paul

I would not recommend it. The 220 does not share the 1.5 picoliter dot
size. It's 3 pl, I believe. The 2200 I'm experimenting with to see if
acceptable (to me) 100% carbon prints can be made in larger sizes has a 4 pl
dot, and even with LK in the mix to smooth it down, it's a bit on the grainy
side for an 8 x 10. I think with certain papers, with Hawk Mtn. Peregrine
Velvet being at the top of the list, the K2 UC printers with Eboni installed
will be able to make prints that I'll find very acceptable for 16 x 20 and
above, and that is the direction I expect to go -- farming out my larger
prints to people who can keep their large format printers running often
enough to keep them in good shape. Note that this K2 approach does not
require a shop to dedicate a 9600 to B&W. All that is needed is a neutral
MK, like Eboni or some others that are out there. (And I'm curious about
those HP printers with relatively neutral carbon.)
