inks for Epson R1800

inks for Epson R1800

2007-08-21 by Myron Gochnauer

My Epson 2200 dedicated to color printing --- I have one dedicated to
UT3-d monochrome too --- seems to be terminal (sudden loss of various
colors in mid-print, draining of the magenta cartridge after only
three prints...), so I've order an R1800.

I plan to use Paul Roark's "pure carbon" setup for B&W with the 1800,
which makes it possible to print colour as well.

The question: Is there any reason why I cannot use color inks
designed for the 2200 in the 1800 as long as I can profile the system?

I have a significant quantity of MIS Pro inks for the 2200, and it
would be a shame to waste them. I am perfectly content with their
appearance, and normally print on matte papers.

I have a R1800 with 3MK and have just bought a used(2 years old)
Epson Pro 4000. My epson Pro 4000 use the same inkset as the 2200.

Therefore I can let you know why you cannot use the 2200 bulk ink in
R1800 even with profiling;

1. 2200 use Matte OR Photo black, Light Black, Cyan, Light Cyan,
Magenta, Light Magenta and Yellow inks.

2. R1800 use Matte black, Photo black, Cyan, Magenta, Red, Blue,
Yellow and Glop inks.

While the LK and Light color inks are not used in the 1800, the dark color
inks and black are in the same family as the MIS Pro inks. I use Eboni
everywhere, regardless of which inkset it was packaged with. MIS says there
are differences, but I believe my wire-rod, pull-down tests made the R800
color inks appear to be essentially the same as the MIS Pro dark color inks.
I've used the R800 blue for some time as a magenta replacement in the cool
toners for the inksets I've been involved with. That is, they mix with
standard MIS UT-Pro based inks and print well with the 2200 and other Epson
pigment printers.

The main thing I've noticed changing is the load of the PK. There as
printer speeds have gone up the optimal load seems to have changed. The
result is a better dmax from a PK that is optimized for the specific
printer, but I've seen no damage to a printer from the use of a PK that is
not optimized.

So, my best guess is that the MIS Pro dense color inks will be useable in
the R1800, but the PK, while useable, may not achieve the ultimate in dmax.
But, note that MIS says they are different.
