3800 Ticking Noise

3800 Ticking Noise

2007-10-24 by Jeff Magidson

I just set up a new Epson pro 3800 printer and it works great EXCEPT
it makes this somewhat annoying TICK sound each time the head makes a
pass. Kind of like being in a room with a clock that has a loud sweep
second hand. My trusty R2400 was much quieter.

Does anyone else out there with a 3800 have this sound issue?

Thanks,

-Jeff

Jeff,

Turn the music up a little louder. ;>)

Yes. Mine does the same thing. My first one didn't but had other
problems. I have leaned to ignore the TICKING sound, but it drove me
crazy at first.

I can't hear my 3800 when it is printing. Have to look at to
see if it is printing.

Haven't had that problem. Mine makes the usual noises when it's first
gearing up to print after being turned off but while it's printing I don't
hear anything like a ticking sound.

Jeff:

I have this exact problem, except on a used R2200 I bought for K7
inks. It drives me crazy when I am in the room. I have stared at the
moving print head for a long timeto try to determine the problem. As
it does not seem to affect the print quality (as far as I can tell)
and no obstruction seems to be present, I think it occurs internally
behind where I can see and may have something to do with the gears
and mechanism that drive the head. I would love to pull the printer
apart and have a look.

Are you sure that the printer head is not hitting the edge of the
paper? Try increasing the platen gap and see if the ticking goes away.

I haven't heard the problem either...mine is very silent while printing.

Well... I looked inside the printer with a flashlight with the cover up as it was printing and
could not see what was causing the noise. I think perhaps it was happening each time the
paper advanced. In any event, the sound has now mysteriously stopped and I have made
many prints and smaller test prints without any noise.

On another note:

Does any know if this printer does a cleaning cycle EVERY time the machine is turned on? Or
are all those startup machinations / gyrations doing something else?

I was just doing a little hovering over my printer, a 4800, and notice a
slight ticking sound. It looks like it is caused by the ink lines hitting
the front body of the printer when the head is returning to the right. Ain't
no big deal. If that is what is causing you sound, you might try a small
piece of foam on the printer body/chaise and prevent the lines from hitting
the edge.

My 3000 has been ticking, nay, clattering for about ten years. It is
the strip of ink lines thrashing about on each pass, so it would not
surprise me if you have the upgraded version of the noise. Drew

Jeff,

Take a close look at the paper edges when it comes out of the
printer... sounds like classic "head strike" to me.. may not be severe
enough to be visible, depending on paper. Try widening the platen gap
in the menu settings and see if the clicking goes away.

Yes. I do and it is not from head strikes. The first one I had
didn't. The replacement does, but this is the only issue and it does
other things much better than the first one such as very consistent
manual rear paper feeding so I will live with the ticking. I don't
even notice it anymore.

[Digital BW] Re: 3800 Ticking Noise

2007-11-28 by Eric Chan

There are various sources of repetitive "ticking" or "grunting" noises
that the 3800 makes on each head pass. Some are normal and can be
safely ignored; others are not.

As pointed out above, it's normal for the ink ribbons connecting the
print head to the ink carts to "snap" as the print head changes
direction with each pass. These ribbons might even snap against the
side of the printer; that's fine.

The print head may be touching the edge of the sheet. That's called a
head strike, and can be avoided by (1) increasing the platen gap,
preferably via the software driver, (2) making sure the sheet isn't
curled "upwards" before feeding it, and/or (3) avoiding printing
within 1" of the top or bottom edge of the sheet. I now use Platen Gap
= Wide for all my prints and haven't had a head strike in months.

The print head may be crashing into the walls of the printer itself.
If so, this is a mechanical defect in your unit -- this can
potentially be a serious problem (damage to the print head) and should
be taken care of by calling Epson Pro Support (they will likely
replace your unit).

Yes, it does a "smaller" cleaning cycle when the unit is powered up.
This is necessary for cleaning off any dried ink that might be on the
print head.
