Golden Trout Photo Workshop

2008-02-16 by pr_roark

I appologize in advance for this plug.

The brochures for this summer's Golden Trout Workshops are now in the
mail. This non-profit High Sierra (California) workshop is in the
wilderness, but Roy Harrington and I will be there with printers to
demostrate various inksets and workflows. At $395 for the entire
week, this is a great bargain for those who like high elevation
(10,000 feet and up) wilderness environments. It's a 3 mile hike in
and definitely not for everyone.

The main page for the workshop group is at
http://www.goldentroutworkshops.org/ Since 2 of the 3 sessions are
natural history oriented, this page and the brochure are oriented in
that direction. (There will also be a naturalist at the photo
session who'll conduct interpreted natural history hikes for spouses
who don't want to talk photography.)

I have a page that is more oriented to the photo session (the second
week) at http://www.paulroark.com/GTthumbnails.html

The brochure, which contains the registration form, is in a PDF at
http://www.goldentroutworkshops.org/GTC_BROCHURE08b.pdf or contact me
for one.

If you have any questions, please contact me off list.

I hope to meet some more of you at Golden Trout Photo Workshop this
summer.

Golden Trout Photo Workshop

2009-02-18 by pr_roark

Please excuse the plug -- but it's at least non-profit. (And we
really give meaning to that status!)

The Golden Trout Photo Workshop will be July 5 - 11 this year. This
is a High Sierra wilderness camp that provides a unique opportunity
to experience this type of environment with a group a avid B&W (and
color) photographers. The workshop will appeal mostly to those who
love the High Sierra (10,000 ft. elevation and above) type of
environment. Most days include short or moderate (optional) hikes to
excellent photo op locations in the John Muir Wilderness.

Roy Harrington and I will, of course, be there demostrating B&W
printing and profiling. While it is in the wilderness, we have solar
electric systems for charging camera batteries, as well as running
printers and computers. (I'll be shooting with the Canon 5D2 this
year as opposed to my usual mf film.)

See http://www.goldentroutworkshops.org/ for general information.
See http://www.paulroark.com/GTthumbnails.html for more information
and some links to photos of mine in the area.

The registration form and brochure is at
http://www.goldentroutworkshops.org/GTCbrochure09_2.pdf

A full week is only $495 -- can't beat the price.

I expect the workshop fill.

Let me know if you have any questions.

That will be quite a change. For me it will be a much smaller
incremental change: I'll take the 5D Mark II to Tuscany Photographic
Workshops with me this year, instead of the 5D I took last year, and
previous seasons. The higher resolution is great, but its the
increased dynamic range, and sensor cleaning, that I most appreciate.

Just don't take those 5D2s out in light rain - even with a rain cover (=
condenstation), they'll probably stop working.
Unfortunately they are not at all weather proof. We had 8 out of 26
5D2s fail in light rain on a recent trip - where no Nikons or Sonys failed.

I don't tend to take cameras out in the rain, though thats good to

BUT, -

"Sad to say, this story was truncated prematurely: the 5Dii 'died' in the
field after moisture exposure. I was not the only one to have similar
moisture-related problems on our Antarctica trip. Out of 26 5Dii's on
Michael's Antarctic expedition, fully 25% failed. The camera is certainly
not waterproof. Canon says just that in the manual. But it would be good if
it were moisture-proof or even resistant. It does not appear to be. "

I've noted the Luminous Landscape Antartic experience with some
concern. (The film camera will be in the car, just in case.)

My M8's, on the other hand, have been dunked in rivers and I even fell
on one at the last Golden Trout Workshop and broke my nose, but they
just keep working! The Golden Trout Workshop is fantastic and I'm
signing up again as soon as I get back from Peru!

I recently did just that- took mine out in a light rain. Didn't
realize they were highly at risk. It didn't stop working. Now, I
wasn't out in it for long- just got out of the car, took a couple of
shots, got back in, repeated that at another location, wiped the
camera off immediately each time, and it wasn't raining very hard. I
was lucky, I guess. There must be a threshold of rain amount that
does them in.

OT: Canon's Battery Pack LP-E6 for the 5D Mark II

2009-02-19 by Sam McCandless

I'd appreciate any help in sourcing a spare Battery Pack LP-E6 for
Canon's new 5D Mark II from somewhere other than B&H, which I'd
prefer, but I'm wait-listed there and eager to have a second battery
for my new 5DII.

I'd be glad to find an LP-E6 either on-line or at a store in or near
Sonoma County in Northern California.

My Google search seemed to turn one up, but on looking closer, I
realized that USbattery.net was listing a "Replacement CANON LP-E6
Battery".

Thanks in advance for any help.

I took my 5D2 in a light snowing condition for about two hours and then had
condensation on the lens when I came indoors. The camera continued to work
without a problem.

Which lens was it, Gary, and did it have a filter on it?

Sam,

I was using the 24-105 F4L. I did not have a filter on it. It was about 20
degrees outside with light to heavy snow falling. I was taking the camera in
and out of a case with no additional covering on it. It took at least 30
minutes for the condensation to clear. After reading about all of the
camera failures that were reported from rain or condensation I am concerned
about future wet weather activities.

Thanks for your prompt response, Gary.

I'm concerned too about the threat from wetness. I've always avoided
rainy weather (no snow where I live), but I haven't been worrying
about condensation. Now that I am, I'm curious to know whether you
were wearing the battery grip (BG-E6) on the bottom of your 5D2, and
whether you ever noticed condensation with your "old" camera(s)? I
never have, in the several years I've been trying to learn
photography, and I usually get a good look after I come in from
shooting, because I take off whatever lens was on and even take the
filter off it (for cleaning) before storing everything separately (in
neoprene bags).

Thanks again.

Well, the lens isn't the camera. And camera failure won't be related
to lens condensation; lenses are rated as watersealed or not, separate
from the body. We're talking about camera body failure due to camera
body exposure to rain, mist, or fog, short of actual submersion in
water. The 5D Mark II was listed as being a sealed body, which is for
exactly such "damp but not submerged" conditions. But it sounds as
though that may not be the case, which is well worth knowing...

I have not read every LL posting on this, but the 2 comments I've seen
that seem to have been attributed to Canon suggest that corrosion or
the like was found under the shutter button of one sample, and there
may have been a bad batch of cameras. One user found that, as a
preventative, one could simply tape over the shutter button, thus
sealing it, and it will continue to work normally. If there was a bad
batch of cameras, hopefully Canon will identify those owners and offer
to replace the defective component(s). I suspect they are working the
problem.

(On a more positive note, Canon announced new tilt shift 24 and 17mm
lenses, finally replacing their old 24mm TS dog.)

Sam,

I do not have the battery grip.

Condensation is always a problem in going from a cold to a warm environment
but it has never stopped any camera I have had from working in the past. It
did make it impossible to see through the viewfinder and lens but the camera
still worked it you wanted hazy photos. From what I read regarding this
issue I took the information to mean that the electronics of the camera
stopped working and in most cases never started working again. Is there
anyone who has had this happen who can explain more?

Hi Paul:

Can you please elaborate a bit more on what the 7-day workshop will cover in regards to
photography and photo printing? The online description of the workshop doesn't mention too
much in detail. I'm trying to expand my skills in printing b&w with Epson printers, and to
delve into the mysteries of the Quadtone RIP and other black inksets.

Thanks!

The agenda is rather loose. We -- Roy Harrington and I -- try to
respond to what the group wants. So, once we have most of the spots
filled I'll circulate e-mails to the group asking what their interests
are.

The workshop is located in a very scenic wilderness area. So on most
days most people want to get out to do some shooting. So, not only is
it a 3 mile hike to get to the facility (there is a separate pack
station that some hire to haul in their gear), but hikes of different
lengths are taken on most days to get to the best shooting venues.

Increasingly, of course, digital capture dominates. Roy has been
primarily a 4x5 shooter for his serious work, and I've been a medium
format film (Tech Pan) shooter. This year I'll have a Canon 5d2, and
it's possible Roy will also switch to digital. So, we may be moving
more into the various issues that relate to digital capture.

While the camp is in the wilderness, we have a solar electric system,
and we pack in a printer. What printer and inksets will be
demonstrated is still open. One way or the other, however, QTR rip and
Create ICC will be covered. I also pack in a spectro, and we and
several others bring laptops. So, we'll be able to demo most aspects
of profiling, a few different inksets, and a variety of different
papers.

Most of the printing and profiling demos are in the evening (the solar
system has plenty of battery power), and usually at least one full day
is spent staying at camp and concentrating on printing and profiling.

To be frank, I think some of the highest value of this type of workshop
results from the rather continuous discussions that occur among the
like minded photographers. While Roy and I are the designated workshop
leaders, there are a number of participants who are themselves workshop
leaders and photo teachers, and virtually everyone brings some type of
expertise to the party. I sometimes think I learn more from these
other experts than they learn from me. So, the structure is not
oriented toward Roy and I lecturing the group. Many of the
participants bring and share their expertise with the others in the
group. It becomes a rather horizontal interchange of ideas and
knowledge that, hopefully, benefits everyone. There are enough experts
in various fields that almost any photo question that comes up will
have someone in the group who can respond.

Additionally, we have a naturalist there who can respond to questions
that relate to the environment and history of the camp. It's one of
the only structures that was allowed to exist in the Wilderness areas.
The 100 year old log cabins are themselves great photo subjects. So
it's a unique venue that is itself a major draw, and the wilderness
setting is a major part of the experience. Roy and I have both been
High Sierra wilderness backpackers for many years, so the venue is a
major part of the draw for us. I was involved with the Golden Trout
workshop group long before the photo session was added. As the non-
profit's name indicates, its roots are in natural history.

I hope this gives you a little better idea of what the workshop is
about. A week in the High Sierra wilderness with a group of like-
minded photographers for $495 is about as good an investment as I can
think of.

The official Golden Trout workshop web page is at
http://www.goldentroutworkshops.org/

I have a bit more information and some photos at

Let me know if you have any questions.

Golden Trout Photo Workshop

2010-02-21 by pr_roark

(I apologize in advance for the plug; cross posted on the B&W Print and QTR forums.)

The brochures for this summer's non-profit Golden Trout Photo Workshop (and Natural History Workshops) have been mailed. So, we are accepting registrations.

Each summer Roy Harrington and I host a High Sierra wilderness-photo workshop at the historic Golden Trout camp in the Southern High Sierra, just south of Mt. Whitney, above Lone Pine, California. It's at 10,000 feet and a 3 mile (easy) hike in. We have solar power for charging cameras and running a printer, computers, spectros, etc., but this is in the Golden Trout Wilderness, at the southern border of the John Muir Wilderness. (There are no internet connections -- downright primitive.)

For those who like photography and dramatic High Sierra landscapes, this $495/week, food and shelter (tent cabin) provided workshop is a bargain.

See http://www.paulroark.com/GTthumbnails.html for more information oriented to the photo session.

The official web site is at http://goldentroutworkshops.org/

A PDF version of the brochure is posted here:
http://goldentroutworkshops.org/GTC2010-brochure.pdf

Hope to see some of you there this summer.

This is an excellent workshop. I did it two years ago and wish I had the
time to do it again this year.

The big plus is the chance to sit down with Paul and talk about carbon
printing!

"The Golden Trout Photo Workshop will be July 5 - 11 this year."

Paul, my brochure shows the photo session to be June 20-26 (session 1). that is the one I signed up for. I hope the brochure is correct.

Those were the 2009 dates. If I said that about the 2010 workshop, it's my mistake.

The dates for the 2010 photo session are June 20-26, as shown in the brochure.

I think my post Message #99474 on Feb. 20 was the first one with respect to this year's workshop, but maybe not. We don't accept registrations until the brochures, which include the registration form, are mailed. Then it's all on a first come basis. (Natural History session 2 is already full.) So, I hold off on posting things until we can actually accept registrations.

The brochure is also on line now at http://goldentroutworkshops.org/GTC2010-brochure.pdf

The organization's official web page is at http://goldentroutworkshops.org/ and has the correct dates.

I have more photo related information here:
http://www.paulroark.com/GTthumbnails.html

We do still have room in the 2010 workshop.

Thank you for the clarification Paul. You have set my mind at ease. My registration for the Black & White Photo session was put in the mail on 2/27. Hopefully, it will arrive in time for me to make it in.

Paul, et al, I am so disappointed that I will not be able to attend the workshop. Physical conditions prohibit that kind of hiking, etc.
