Is MIS's Eboni Black the same as R1800 MK?

I was told by a vendor of Image Specialist inks that the Eboni Black ink sold by MIS is the same ink as the matte black used in the IS bulk inks for the R800/R1800. Can anyone confirm or deny this. Has anyone compared output from the two inks on the same media? Thanks all!

I would suggest the WJ1082 matte black ink. Cross reference to these ink (or others) on the Image Specialists web site http://www.image-specialists.com/catalog_pigment_ultra.aspx

To print B&W on matte and color on glossy papers, is it possible to use
3MK on R1800 with 5 dye color inks instead of Epson's original
UltraChrome color inks?
R1800 has 5 UltraChrome color inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, plus red and
blue. They are more for matte paper without gloss optimizer. How if I
use five compatible dye inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light
magenta?
Or, if dye black is required to print color photos, is it possible to
make it:
MK+MK+PK+C+M+Y+LC+LM

With a rip that can handle color, the 1800 has lots of possibilities. However, the Epson drive requires the expected colors to be in their expected places, and QTR does not pass the color information through the rip. It converts to grayscale. (I'd like to see a versionn of Create ICC-RGB that does pass the color information through.) Don't use dyes; Eboni is not compatible with them. I'd recommend you use MIS (or Epson) color pigments that are designed for the 1800 plus the 3-MK. To print glossy, just swap out the MK in the PK spot and do not check "gloss" in the driver. Then the Epson driver will print color as usual, using the PK when a glossy paper type is used. Thanks Paul. After reading your email I dropped my plan to use dye inks in R1800 together with 3MKs. Instead, I have some UT7 inks available and it was originally for an Epson 2200 printer. Is it possible to use the ink on the same R1800 with 3MK together to make it multiple choices where I can choose to print 3MKs, or MKs with gray or toned inks?? For R1800, the rest of 5 unused ink positions are: Cyan, Magenda, Yellow, Red, Blue Other than MK/PK, UT7 has 6 inks: light black, dark gray, light gray, cool tone, sepia tone, light cool tone I would like to use light black, dark gray, light gray, cool tone, sepia tone in R1800's 5 positions. Any suggestion to set this up? BTW I printed a few pictures using 3MKs onto different sized Moab Entrada natural paper. Looking at the results I feel 3MK method is very excellent on 11x17 or larger paper. But for letter size some light black/gray/light gray inks may help to smooth the transition especially on light human skin tone. - philip pr_roark wrote:

If you're proficient with QTR you could certainly come up with some combination that would make the 1800 a variable tone printer. > For R1800, the rest of 5 unused ink positions are: Cyan, Magenda, > Yellow, Red, Blue > > Other than MK/PK, UT7 has 6 inks: light black, dark gray, > light gray, cool tone, sepia tone, light cool tone The UT7 was made so that it could run on a k2 printer using the Epson driver. That won't work with the 1800. The LK, in particular, is going to be redundant and not needed. It was a compromise due to the Epson driver and the inability to stop the LK from being used. It is a blended ink -- just a little blue in it. > I would like to use light black, dark gray, light gray, As noted above, I'd avoid the UT7 LK. It simply will not add much. The UT7 light and dark grays -- in addition to an MK or PK -- should be all you'll need for your carbon channel. Use broad skirts -- lots of overlap -- on the curves to suppress microbanding. > cool tone, sepia tone in R1800's 5 positions. > Any suggestion to set this up? If you dump the LK, you could ad a PK and have glossy compatibility. Good luck with the system. Paul www.PaulRoark.com
