I'm thinking about storing my printer (epson 4000) instead of getting rid of it. I was wondering about the possibility of cleaning out the inks for long-term storage. Any advice or experience? Thanks!

I've stored printers with "cleaning fluid" in them, and it works fine, with the caveat that cleaning fluid is often a lower viscosity version of the clear base. Perhaps due to its lower viscosity, I found dry cartridges in one printer where I used it. It might be slowly running straight through the printer. As such, I'm now mostly using the clear base I use in Carbon-6 ( http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink- Mixing.pdf ). It's just distilled water (55% by weight), glyerol (35%) and Photo Flo (10%) -- very cheap and effective. How long of storage? When you decide to fire it up again they (Epson or anyone) may not make inks for it anymore, or printer drivers for you future OS. Are you talking years or months? Mark http://www.stillrivereditions.com

I don't want to give up the printer just yet. It really makes nice prints. I was thinking a year or so, maybe 2. I'm not really worried about availability of inks. Generating profiles is pretty straight forward. I'm sure there will always be 3rd party ink suppliers. --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Mark Savoia <mark@...> wrote:

I'm getting banding on my prints. Head alignment is OK, and nozzle check (via Epson's driver, QTR doesn't support nozzle checks) appear OK too. Then it occurred to me that the Epson nozzle check wouldn't check the glop slot because it's expecting to fire a clear liquid and how would you tell if it's working OK when you couldn't see the result on paper? So, because the glop channel presumably doesn't fire during the nozzle check, and the two other channels appear OK then the glop slot is probably the one causing the banding (??). That said, I'd like to relocate the MK cartridge in the glop slot to, say, the yellow slot (I'm not worried about colour printing). It looks to me like all I have to do is the following in my curve file: 1. Change LIMIT_Y= [blank] to the value for LIMIT_GL, and then set LIMIT_GL to [blank] 2. Change UNUSED_INK_3=Y to CURVE_Y= [and cut/paste the values from the existing CURVE_GL line, and then change CURVE_GL="..." to UNUSED_INK_8=GL Is my reasoning sound...and is the solution this simple? Thanks for any help! Ken --- On Mon, 10/20/08, pr_roark <pr_roark@yahoo.com> wrote:

Had the same issue in the past. Eboni in K, MK and GL. Paul Roark had suggested testing all channels by printing the 21-step image using a single channel. I realized that MY printer had the less single channel banding in the Y,M,B and R channels. So I moved my blacks to the Y, M and B channels, modifying the curves using the method you describe, only I used QTR curve tool instead of Notepad. Result when 3 best channels are used: banding is gone gone and gone! So short answer: Yes and Yes. Good luck, Denis > > > 1. Change LIMIT_Y= [blank] to the value for LIMIT_GL, and then set LIMIT_GL to [blank] > > 2. I think you've got it. I do all this in the QTR Curve Creator in Windows, then save the file with a new name that indicates what slots are used. On my 1800 the linearization seems to hold when I change ink and curve positions. However, I've heard some say they had to re- linearize the 1800 when they've done this. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Excellent! Thank you Denis. It's rare (at least for me) when things actually are as easy as they look. I'll give it a try later this week. I'll re-create my curves once I establish which positions to use. Thanks again, Ken --- On Tue, 10/21/08, the_des_bois <thedesbois@...> wrote:

Thank you Paul! > I think that checkerboard pattern checks the glop position. Do you know how one evaluates the checkerboard to determine if things are good or bad? Of course, I guess that test is no good when there's MK in the glop position. > I think you've got it. Well, I'm just happy it's going to be this easy! If it works then relinearizing will be a trivial final touch. Many thanks Paul, Ken

OK, just tried it. I guess it sounded good in theory...then harsh reality smacked me in the face. I made the changes to the file, then pulled my yellow cart and replaced it with the MK cart formerly in the glop slot and put my old glop cart back in that slot. However, now the printer (correctly) reports that an incorrect cartridge is plugged into the yellow slot. How does one overcome that? Ken --- On Tue, 10/21/08, the_des_bois <thedesbois@...> wrote:

You need to change the chips. I use a sharp knife to shave off the plastic pegs that hold it on. Then they'll pry off easily. I also use a 1/8 inch of tape at the top of the chip to hold it onto the new cart. Be sure it's secure. A cart that is installed or removed with a chip off can wreck the printer by bending the contacts.
