Epson R1900 VS. Epson 2880

Epson R1900 VS. Epson 2880

2009-10-14 by jslaughterbeck1@yahoo.com

I'm quite new to this group and I am getting ready to order a new Epson Printer, I'm torn between the R1900 and the 2880. I print both Black and White and Color, probably more so color. Is there really any advantage to the 2880 over the 1900 taking into consideration the price difference. I consider myself an advanced amature photographer more into portraits than anything else. I've been following the discussions here, and want to start developing my black and white skills. Any advise would be appreaciated.

Thank you

John

Late last year I talked to the people from Epson at a workshop for printing. They indicated the 1900 was terrific for color and glossy color, but not for black and white nor matt papers for color.

I have a r1900 and have to agree with the Epson people. The initial color images on gloss were beautiful. After profiling they were amazing. Then I switched to UT-3D which I had left over from a failed printer, not for the faint-hearted. I was finely able to get a very good print with a strait line curve -QTR- on glossy paper. Unfortunately this printer will not accept anything other than glossy paper to my dismay. B&W on glossy is... OK, but far from the quality of print I want for the effort. IMHO Go 2880 for B&W.

Thanks Guys, I ordered the 2880 today, now it’s time to learn all about
Black and White printing, and what all these initials mean. Anyone know of
any good web sites to order a CIS system ?

So if you are going to print enough to use a CIS - why not just get the new
3880?
They are no more expensive than a 2880 once you include the value of the
extra ink you get with a 3880 and you won't have the hassle of resetting
the ink cartridges /CIS and wasting ink on cleaning cycles every 5 prints
(as one cartridge after another empties). Plus you get 17" wide printing and
despite that they are not much bigger than a 2880.

I looked at the 3880 and figured it was over kill for what I do. I've
already ordered the 2880 and it has shipped. Oh well, maybe I'll know
better next time.

Article #9 at the link below has a good workflow outline for the 2400. It should work for the 2880 and is a good place to begin.
