Maxtor XT2190 Jumpers and Formatting

Maxtor XT2190 Jumpers and Formatting

2006-10-08 by Tim Curtis

Hi Everyone -

Does anyone have the data for formatting an old Maxtor XT2190 hard drive for
use on one of the early Series IIIs? I'm particularly in need of the
correct jumper settings for the drive and the adaptec interface board.

Also, any info on the formatting procedure would be great - do I need to low
level format, crbadtrax, etc.

Thanks!

Tim

Need help from Early Series III Owner

2006-10-10 by Tim Curtis

Can anyone who has an early Series III get in touch with me? I need to have some questions answered about the early Hard Disks - the ones that used the old Q777 cards.
I'm in the middle of a project, so if anyone can get in touch asap it would be great.
Thanks,
Tim

WTB: Series III

Anyone got one for sale? I'm not looking for an MFX system - it's got to be the Series III type mainframe.
I'm interested in hearing about any revsion machines.
Thanks,
Tim

BTW - I've got a LOT of analog goodies and high end effects units that I might be interested in trading as well.
Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim,

I bought a Fairlight VT5 a few weeks ago from a studio in
germany. The seller is also selling a Series 3 upgraded to
Mfx2 specs... If you're interested, here are his coordinates:

Hi Laurent -
Thanks for the info. I'll send them an email.
As for the 6.03, does it still use the Q777 card? If so I'm trying to find out some info on the Hard Disk/Controller card combination as well as the jumper settings.
Any chance that you know this info or have the opportunity to check on it?
Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim,

The rev 6.03 use the Q777 card as SCSI controler. I believe
the upper version kept the Q777 but used the CMI-41 as SCSI
controler.

In my CMI the Q777 is connected to an Adaptec board which
is a ESDI/SCSI converter. This board is driving two Maxtor
XT-1140 ESDI hard-disk.

I believe, the main problem with the Q777 board is that it
is only able to drive SCSI HD which are hard formatted with
256 Bytes sectors. All modern HD are formatted with 512 Bytes
sectors and do not accept the 256 Bytes hard format. There are
a few information about that on KMI web site but if anyone
has more info on that subject, I be interested to hear about it.

Regarding your question, what jumpers are you interested with ?
I may be able to check the Adaptec config. But regarding the HD,
it you require that you use the same model as mine...

Best regards.

     Laurent.

Thanks so much Laurent! That helps immensely!

I hate to ask another favor, but would it be possible for you to
check and see what versions the EPROMS are on the Q777 and the
Q133? There should be a single EPROM on the Q777 (probably labeled
SCSI) and 2 EPROMs on the Q133 - an FL8MRKx and a QF0MRKx, with
the "x" denoting the revision.

Oh, and one more thing: (as if I haven't bothered you enough) Is
the data cable from the ACB4000A to the XT2190 (the wider of the 2
cables) just straight through, or is there a section with a twist in
it?

Thanks Laurent! I owe you!

Tim

Hello Tim,

Here are the information you requested. I made two pictures of my
Adaptec 4000A and of my XT-2190 hard-disk. You will find them on
my web site there :

-> http://www.vectorsurfacingtools.com/fairlight/HD/

Please notice that my Adaptec board is setup with a SCSI ID = 2 with
the jumper C-D set on J5.

I've also included the Adaptec 4000A documentation I did found on the
web. The quality is poor, but it's better that nothing.

Hope it helps.

       Laurent.

Hi Tim,

It doesn't bother me. I think this forum is the ideal medium to
exchange information and help each-other.

The Q777 EPROM doesn't have any revision label on it...

On the Q133, here are the revision numbers :
- F8LMRK6
- Q9F0MRK1

And both cables between the Adaptec board and the HD are straight.

Hope it helps.

       Laurent.
