IIx CRT replacement

IIx CRT replacement

2009-02-24 by tama_rat

My IIx had developed the all-too-common screen rot, so I recently
replaced the tube. I found a compatible NOS replacement for ~$100 (it
lacks the front plate/shield that the original had), and spent a few
hours swapping it in.

Pics are posted in the Photos section.

If you haven't worked around TVs or monitors before, this can be quite
dangerous. It should not be attempted by one unfamiliar with the hazards!

I had a request for information on where I purchased my replacement
tube, so here it is:

I bought it from VDC (Video Display Corporation) in Tucker, GA, USA.
Their phone # is 770-938-2080, and their website is at:

http://www.videodisplay.com/

I called them and asked if they had a Philips M38-327GH. The woman I
spoke with was able to look up that part, and asked a couple of
questions: "Does that one have a plate on the front?" and "Does it
have reverse-mounted mounting ears?"

I told her it did, and she said that she didn't have that one, but had
a cross-referenced part that should fit but lacked the plate.

It was around $100, so I took a chance and bought it. Their part
number (shown on the invoice) is VDC1501PP31BP. I didn't see any
manufacturer's name or part number on the tube itself.

The neck of the new tube is a little longer than the original, but it
still fit fine. I was able to seat it a little further into the front
panel of the monitor than the original.

Hope that helps anyone else looking to do this -- let me know if I can
provide any more info.

Joe

Re: IIx CRT replacement

Hey there Joe!

Apologies for the intrusion, but hoping you could assist with a project I'm working on... Looking to replace the black gasket around my CMI's monitor (got mine with it missing). I'm going down the road of having some custom extrusion made for this.

From the pics you posted on your project, it looks like the gasket is in a "tadpole" (head atop tail) shape and not a "P" shape. Are you able to confirm this for me? I believe the head of the gasket is approx. 5mm in diameter... Could you take a guess at the length of the tail? It looks to be over 1cm, but I'm not sure.

Also, what material did you use to reattach the gasket to the monitor after replacing the CRT?

Any feedback you could provide would be most appreciative. Thanks again for all you've done for our community!

Best - Frank

Hi Frank,

Not sure if Joe answered, so I had a look for you. Shape is "tadpole" indeed. The "tail" is 9 mm, the head 3 mm long, 2 mm thick. I suggest to use a glue that stays somewhat flexible.

Kind regards,

Peter Kersten.
