Logic 7.2

Logic 7.2

2006-08-26 by dubbingmonkey

Hello all,

I've just been looking at upgrading to 7.2. But looking at the comments on the Apple web
site it looks like lots of people are finding Logic a bit buggy. I have to say that I tend to
agree with this view. I use Pro-tools professionally in a post-production environment all
the time and have found it to be very stable, with a bit of data t.l.c. I would dread using
Logic professionally as it is terribly shakey. I did one compostition job on Logic recently
for a corporate client and it was a very seat of the pants session (would Logic play all of
the instruments all of the time kind of thing). My views do seem to be echoed by other
users with lots of people saying the Pro bit of the name should be taken off. I'm very
disappointed that this paid upgrade hasn't settled the software down. Surely Apple must
read posts on their own website, and hopefully these message boards as well, and if they
do aren't they ever going to stabilize Logic.

I'm I alone in thinking this? Does your Logic crash or is it perfectly stable? If so what are
you doing that I'm not? I'd really like to know.

If anyone has any comments it would be great to hear them.

I love Logic and I'd love to use in my professional work, but if a piece of software crashes
or misbehaves more than once a day, it isn't making it into my studio.

cheers

DM

My Logic Pro is perfectly stable. I use it every day, in a
professional setting, as do many others around the world. The only
time it crashes is when I use (and abuse!) very CPU-hungry,
experimental software (which I love, btw) like NI's Reaktor, or Beta
software that I'm testing. But that's usually a good sign, as it
signals that I'm at the bleeding edge of music technology, where I
like to skate! Again, if you use the built-in synths, sampler and fx,
and/or dozens of proven, legit plug-ins, you will find Logic very
stable.

Ned

Interesting. What hardware do you use? What is your set up?
I've used Logic for years, love the programme but I couldn't call it
stable :(

At the moment, with a Macbook Pro & and a RME Fireface 800, Logic
easily crashes at least once a day, and this is without any third
party software.

And keep in mind that Apple censors those comments. They freely admit to a
policy of deleting messages which they deem to be too critical.

It seems like I go through spells of stability and instability with no clue
as to what causes the change. One thing that seems to cause a lot of crashes is
using a lot of plugs and virtual instruments - instead of getting audio
warnings, just bam it dies.

One thing you can do, is to create a new autoload file from scratch - in case
there is corruptin in your autoload, then it gets into every new song. Create
a new tempate (perhaps by renaming the existing ones), then copy things over
part by part.

And of course, there is the option of creating a new boot disk, re-install
Logic, and leave out anything that is not absolutely necessary. I check all demo
software in Garageband on a different mac .

I'm using LP7.2 on a Dual G5 w/ a MOTU 24io and on my PowerBook G4
15" w/ an MIO 2882+DSP and I find both configs to be pretty stable,
not as stable as PT, but a lot more stable than DP 4 or 5.

My problems are minor: the most annoying thing is that when I'm using
the Punch On The Fly, it'll work fine for a while but then it will
stop passing audio to the track; i.e. there's meter movement
indicating the hardware is OK and Logic keeps rolling but the track
is blank- no audio, no waveform. I use the auto drop as a workaround
but it's annoying. I haven't had the kind of crippling problems that
some LP7x users have experienced.

I have used LP7 almost every day for the last 2+ years. Based on my
experience, rebuilding the autoload song is a good idea. If your
autoload song is corrupt, then it will corrupt every single session
that you create with it. Another thing that helps is RAM. Get as much
RAM as you can. Logic and Mac OS 10.x LOVE RAM.

RAM can be corrupt, too. Just because your computer works fine w/ all
the other apps doesn't mean that it's Logic's fault. LP puts high
demands on your computer. Apple make a hardware tester. So do a lot
of 3rd party vendors. Get one and check your RAM, etc.
