There was an upgrade to Logic 6 then Logic 7 then 7.1 then 7.2. However, you
can probably get one upgrade from 5 to 7.2. You should contact apple for that
probably. The dongle is not a trivial thing, its the value of the program
which is about $1000 now. So to sell it, is to sell Logic.

I did call Apple, and at least the lower-level sales guy I spoke to
said that they were replacing the keys up until January 2006. Now he
says I have to pay the full price. I'd sure like to explore some
other options....

I think you get a new key when you upgrade. I think I got with Logic 6 which
worked for Logic 7 if I recall correctly.

I have had the same key since I got the first one at Logic 5 or 5.5. I

Same here. I THINK (dont quote my last two brain cells) Apple simply
stopped supporting the blue keys if you hadnt yet upgraded to 7 by the
date they announced. Meaning anyone asking after that date would pretty
much have to buy a new full license to get Logic.

I cant remember exactly what Apple stated about it, but Markus
(Emagic/Apple/SoundDiver Wiz) came on OSXAudio.com at the time and
clarified it, that those of us with blue keys that had in fact already
upgraded to 7 would be in the clear but anyone that hadnt yet was SOL.
There were alot of us freaking out about it and thankfully he popped in
to clear up the confusion.

Ok actually this is kinda making things a bit clearer in my head as to
what was said.. I believe how Markus explained it, if your key BROKE
after Jan 2006 and you hadnt upgraded to 7 yet, you were screwed.. If
your had upgraded though, you were in the clear and were still covered.
At the time though, you could still get an upgrade from the older
versions to 7. Im not sure whether theyre still offering an upgrade from
5/6 -> 7 nowadays though so this may be why theyre telling you to get a
new license. If they do in fact have an upgrade path still, youre in the
clear, all you have to do is put in the license key and your XSKey will
be activated for Logic Pro. Thats all the rest of us had to do. Those
sales reps can be a little retarded at times to say the least..

Id call em back and specifically ask if there is still the upgrade from
Logic 5.5 to 7 Pro and perhaps theyll read that part of their little
canned answer sheet back to you instead hehe.

OK, so can anyone help me find a Mac version of 5.5.1? I have the Win
version, and I have something that says it's a Mac/Windows hybrid,
but I'm having trouble getting it to install.

Anyone have a Mac version 5 they could link to me?

thanks,

oh, and one other related question -- did Logic 5 run under OS X? Or
did that not happen until Logic 6?

Your Logic 5 cd should be hybrid just as mine were, and should have
no trouble installing on a PowerPC Macintosh.

5.5 I believe was the first to run under OS 10.2 (cant remember if
this version carried over to 10.3 or not).
6 runs under 10.3 and somewhat half ass under 10.4. Im also talking
about the PowerPC versions of the OS.
Youre using a brand new Intel Macbook. Logic 5 is not a Universal
Binary application, this wasnt even around when 5,6 and 7 were
initially released.

If you can even get 5 to install under OS 10.4, its probably not
going to play very nice with all of the CoreAudio changes that have
happened in the 5 years or so since its release. OS X has come quite
a loooooooooooong way since then.

Last bit, Logic 5/6/7 were heavily optimized for the PPC Altivec
instruction set. Right away this means Logic is not going to run
under Rosetta on your new Macbook. Its going to run rather slow if it
does at all work (cant remember if you can turn off the Altivec
optimization or not), and the minute it hits a piece of altivec code,
its going to crash and burn.

You need to start looking for an upgrade path to 7 if you plan on
moving forward with your brand new MacBook..

Thanks, Chris....that really clarifies things...and explains why I
can't get this Vsn. 5 installed and running at all.

I need to go talk nice to the Apple folks. Any names you guys can
drop, that will help me get through the red tape:?

Oh,yeah, and one other question...Chris, you aren't the standup guy

I wish! But no and it really makes me mad how he gets like the first
couple of pages on Google when you look up my name haha!
I think hes somewhere along my family tree actually as my dad's side
was originally born there and still have plenty of family back there
but never did bother looking into it.
The Dead Milkmen had a guy named Chris Coccia they used to thank for
photos and stuff all the time in their cd's I wonder if thats him too
heh.

Good luck on the hunt with Apple. I honestly dont think any
namedropping, at least with the grunts youll deal with on the phone
will help. I bet most of them are off site in a call center reading
scripted database answers.

5.4 was the first OS X compatible version. Having said that, the lowest
version you can run on your McIntel is 7.2, 7.1 will launch, but will work
via Rosetta, I.E. Veeeeery slooooooowwwww, no good for any serious audio
work. I guess I'd bite the bullet and buy Logic 7 (it would cost you much
more than thousand bucks if you upgraded incrementally anyway). Just my
$0.02.

Best,

Andy

WHAT??

Are you kidding me? With all the crap I've/we've been through with
Logic's compatibility and stability issues over these many years, and
now I go I finally break down, put out and buy a state-of-the-art Mac
so I can run the software that betrayed me when I was a Win user in
2003...

AND now you tell me they just managed to come up with a version that
will marginally run on the latest Apple hardware? How long before
Logic Pro will run *reliably* on my MacBook?

This just strikes me as insane. So I should have bought a G5, huh?
Now, I have to spend $1000 on software that will eventually run on my
laptop, if I let Apple experiment long enough.

Maybe Cubase will be cheaper and more reliable, after all. I just
can't believe I bought a Mac so I could use Logic again, and it's
like it's 1999!

Am I missing something here?

Yes there is an upgrade path from 5 to 7. I just upgraded my old PC
software & XSKey from 5 to 7
with the old key.

I bought the upgrade from the apple site, I saw the upgrade box at
the apple store too.
so no sales canned questions for me (thank you e-commerce!)
Did have the new code not be accepted by the XSKey website
authorization,
Got the authorization code to tick within Logic when you select
"XSKey manager (or something like that)
enter the codes there.
I think the site authorization area is not working correctly with the
old keys (just a guess)
Go for it,
L7 is still a very cool jump from L5.
Best luck,

You are :-) . Logic has been completely rewritten in order to work
with an Intel based Mac. 7.1 and below are PPC only versions, so
those are not supposed to run on your machine. It's up to you to
decide, but I would at least give it another chance. Someone else has
just said you still can upgrade, so google around.

So, Gio, all I need is an authorized key -- I don't have to have the

I have a blue XS-KEY authorized for both Mac and Win 5.5.1. That will

Once you upgrade to 7.x.x youll get the box, software discs, and the
new authorization codes.
Load them up, authorize your key, and start rocking.
You'll really dig all the new plugs/architecture.

You don't, neither can you install it on your McIntel. The license is
in your XSKey, not in the software or somewhere on your machine. You
can take your XSKey with you to any studio and work there using your
license.

If you are strapped for cash, why don't you get Logic Express. Its actually
pretty full featured. And I think its $300 full price or $150 academic. I doubt
that things are going to be better with other programs. They all have their
ups and downs. And these markets are so big, these companies don't really care
if you jump ship - so you probably aught to stick with Logic for compatibility
with your older songs, and your familiarity with Logic's learning curve.

I would never expec software from a few years ago to run on a new computer.
Recently when Apple upgraded to 10.4.9 or 10.4.10, some plugs like Ohmforce and
Waves went out. So even minor system updates can knock things out. (However,
I was running Wordperfect in classic mode up until a few months ago - amazing
that code not updated since 1996 still runs - but its the exception).

As some other people have pointed out, Mac went from (IBM) G5's to Intel
chips - a completely different architecture which caused whole sale re-writes for
all software. You can also probably pickup a used G5 pretty cheap these days,
and take back or sell the intel mac if you really want to go that way.

Yup, and I ordered it. The only thing I had any apprehension about is
that I have the old blue Emagic XS-Key (authorized for Mac 5.5.1, as
well as Windows). So as long as this upgrade path will work with
that key, I should have no problem. Clearly, the upgrade is for Logic
5 Gold/Plat --> 7, and that's what I have.

Right?

thanks,
Skip

Rad man youre on your way! Yeah when you get your DVD, youll get a new
code to enter into the XSKey.. This unlocks EVERYTHING you see on there
now, all the plugins, instruments, etc and updates your license to cover
7 Pro.. And then you can go ahead and install! Sounds like the disc is
already 7.2 so the only thing youll need to do after installing is
update it to 7.2.3 and do your Apple Pro Application Support installs.
The Pro App install will show up automatically in Software Update once
Logic is installed and setup, but who knows if the disc is new enough it
may already be included in the DVD install.

Glad that all worked out for ya and relatively painlessly!

Plug-ins on the MacBook

2007-07-22 by Skip Leeds

Thanks for the help so far, all . Logic Pro 7.2 is on the way.

I'm currently hobbling along with Cubase LE running on the MacBook. It's at
least allowing me to test the compatibility of my plugs - Stylus, Absynth,
and Miroslav all running well, so far.

However, I'm importing my PSP Audioware plugs - and I note that some are OS
9, some are OS X PPC, and only a few have been converted to UB. So my
question is:

(1) Do I use the VST or AU version of the plugins? I assume RTAS is for
ProTools? And what is MAS?

(2) Will these OS9 or PPC versions run, and if so, efficiently?

Sorry for the noob questions.Mac is a whole new world to me.

1) AU. Yes. MOTU.
2) No.

AU. You can still use your UB (universal binary, I.E. PPC + Intel)
VST plugs via FXPansion's VST/AU wrapper. MAS stands for MOTU Audio
System and is the native format of Digital Performer.

Nope.

Andy
