Cleaner Brighter Logic 8?

Cleaner Brighter Logic 8?

2007-10-17 by gil_gillian

I just thought I'd start this ball rolling on the Forum. Has anyone
else noticed?

Almost as soon as loading up Logic 8 the first time I noticed a slight
improvement to the overall sound. At first I thought 'placebo effect'
- I've just spent money , it must be better, and thus dismissed it as
imagination. On further use I became convinced that something is
different. Well those great guys at Sound On Sound thought the same,
and then tested it out. Apparanetly some plug ins , and especially the
EQ have beed tweaked to improve their overall sound quality. See
their review and in particular the section marked Differential Mixing.

I'm glad I'm not imagining things.

Keep up the good work.

I thought I just had better talent on my latest session! Although I'm
sure that is the case I do notice an improvement in the sound in some
of the plugins. OT maybe, Only problems Im having is with the takes
feature and some issues with my LCU and save. I have also noticed a
few graphics glitches but only sporadic. BOT Have you bounced any
sessions created in 7 and compared? I sure plan on it now that there
is anecdotal evidence but need to get over my head cold to hear any
subtleties.

Well I can tell you the compressors sound a hell of alot clearer and not
as smeared and muddy as they used to. The new types to choose from blow
the older 'Platinum' algorithm out of the water as well.. Really loving
the VCA one right now.. Still wary of doing to much right now though as
both of my macs I use are barely hanging on (dual 867 believe it or not
and a dual 1.6 upgraded machine)..

Glad to hear that!

I was working in pro tools (which I rarely do) the other day and was adjusting an EQ. It
sounded so smooth! So I realized, in contrast, how 'brittle' the Logic 7 EQ sounded.
Specifically the highs were the more noticable problem.

Thanks .... yet one more reason to try to come up with $499 for the new Logic. : )

I agree, something is better. I had problems with the new take feature today and decided to finish the recording in "7". I imediately noticed that 7 sounded less interesting than 8.

If you already own Logic Pro 7, it's only $199 for the upgrade. :)

I saw a lot of posts when it first came out from people who were trying
to figure out if / how to run it and Logic 7 on the same machine. I
presume that this was because they had ongoing projects in Logic 7 that
they didn't want to take any chances with. It sounds like a lot of you
have spent some time with 8, though. Does anybody still see any reason
that someone who's not in the middle of an existing 7 project shouldn't
just switch over? Are there significant shortcomings of 8 at this
time? I ordered my upgrade, but I'm wondering if I should just go ahead
and install right away or not.

Unless you delete Logic 7 it´s still there. Just press the Logic 7 icon and you´re back in the old version.
I don´t find there are any serious shortcomings with the upgrade. I have had problems with the new take feature but just record the old way an everything will be fine. Some shortcuts have changed so a bit of work has to be done but otherwise it´s pretty familiar.

Well I just went for it and aside for a few somewhat embarrassing
moments when I had to find a new location for a setting etc I
recorded all the backing tracks for a client without problems. I did
warn them, sort-of, that I was using a new software version. I'm
starting overdubs soon and will be pointing out that everyone says
this new version "sounds better". Now when I fumble around a little
they may not mind as much. My biggest fear was that I will lose track
count etc. on my dual 1.8 but so far I haven't noticed. I have not
checked out the new compressors as I just like the UA ones better
(than 7), but I will be giving them another chance. I say go for it
and you can still use 7 if needed. I haven't looked back... much.

I am feeling like: if 8 sounds better, is less complicated and more streamlined, has improvements, if I can read and work on all my old 7 projects -- why even bother to keep 7 around? I think I need the space on my hard drive.

What does everyone think?

Well that is a good question. One reason I have is that I have some
old projects pre-seven that I have yet to try opening in 8. When I
get the time I may have to open in 7 then save to bring them into 8.
Haven't tried this. But I really just want to cover my bum.

I am also changing from G5 to Mac Pro - and thats more of a hassle - there
are plenty of legacy plugs that no longer work - and so its hard to get the
patches. For example, I am updating from Absynth 3 to 4 to be able to run on Mac
Pro - but it won't recall the Abs 3 patches saved. I think I am going to have
run Logic 7 on an imac G5 just to get the patches, to re-create things on the
Mac Pro with Logic 8.

L8 will certainly open back to version 5, so for those having legacy
projects you're covered fairly well. I've tested this a bit, but need
to to test more. As far as I can see all the plugs on my V7 on a G5
2*2.2 seem OK in L8. There may be issue through on moving/upgrading to
a new Mac. I'm not sure where previous versions of logic store plug in
settings and thus there may occasion where these setting are 'lost'.
Has anyone tested this out yet?

Keep on trucking,
