Need Help Creating MP3 from Logic

Need Help Creating MP3 from Logic

2007-11-24 by Roney Smith

Hello All,

I am having an extremely difficult time this week in creating a MP3 from
Logic projects.

Using the help and pdf manual did not seem to make a difference either.

LE keeps crashing as well on each attempt.

First, I did not have any blank CDs when trying to burn the songs but having
blank CDs upon our return home has not made a difference.

I am using Logic Express 8 on a black Macbook with Tiger.

I have burned many songs via GarageBand but just realized this week that I
never had a Logic project play back within iTunes (or simply cannot remember
how it was done the first time around).

After having my Macbook since June 2006, one would think that such missteps
would be in my rear view mirror:)

Any assistance is appreciated in advance and I am on Jabber (first and last
name @ Gmail.com) as well tonight and this weekend until my challenge is
overcome.

I created a new group on Flickr as a result of a music to photo experiment
conducted over the Thanksgiving holiday and now the original photographers
are anxious to hear how their photos inspired music:)

The group is entitled FlickrBeats at:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/flickrbeats

I am also in the process tonight of blogging
<http://blog.roneysmith.com>about the experiment as well, so I am
indeed multitasking tonight.

Peace,

Roney

Why do you need to burn a CD in order to produce an mp3 from Logic? Have
you tried the File >> Bounce command, choosing MP3 as the preferred method
of export? You can just save the bounced mp3 anywhere on your hard drive,
and then upload it to the Internet or drag it into iTunes. Whatever you'd
like. If Logic crashes when you do that, try exporting to AIFF (using the
same procedure, but selecting AIFF instead of MP3) and then using iTunes to
convert to MP3.

Just do a bounce. In the bounce window you will see a destination
window on the left. select mp3.

Hello All,

Thanks for your help Shawn and Duane.

Logic still crashes like clockwork. The project appears within finder
as a crashed file but I still have the original completed file.

The only reason I was trying to burn a CD was as a workaround.

Going directly or indirectly is not working.

Logic is crashing so fast that I wonder if I need to reinstall the
original RAM as I do for every new Apple software installation, but it
has to be more than this.

Any other ideas are still appreciated in advance.

Peace,

Roney

Hello All,

I believe that the lights are going on within my head on Logic better
than before.

I know that the solution will expose my humble, newbie status with Logic:)

I am looking around the interface (especially the Inspector panel) to
see the settings.

Within the strips for each track, I see the volume (on the left strip)
that was raised or lowered depending upon my tastes for each track.

But what should the output settings be for each track? Does the
output number have to equal the volume setting?

I believe that the output setting button is off for each track as well.

I see the meter move up and down for the Output 1-2, but the button
says off. Is it like a light switch that has to be turned to either
Read, Write, Latch, or Touch?

I've got a feeling that this setting is the missing link.

Thanks again for your help.

Peace,

Roney

You should not be having crashes. What is you setup? Interface
software version ? Does this just happen when you try to make an Mp3?

That is the setting for automation.

I don't know if you have the problem solved yet with the advice given. I thought I'd sound
off as a Logic 7 user. Didn't know if that would be the right answer for you.

Pete's method of bouncing:

1. In the Ruler (arrange window) (command + 1) from left to right create the green "loop"
area over the whole area you want bounced. Make sure to have a few seconds at the
beginning and one second at the end of dead time. This can be turned on an off with the
"/" key.

2. Go to the mix window (command + 2).

3. Click on Global in the upper left area.

4. Click on Output on the bottom of the same list of buttons Global was at the top of.

5. Under inserts (for Out 1-2, just below the EQ box) try one of the preset mastering
strips. Sometimes these work better for my song than using WaveBurner.

6. Click on "Bounce" at the bottom of the Out 1-2 track.

7. I leave PCM checked on the left, Realtime, I bounce to "file format" Wave, 16 bit, 44100,
Interleaved, surround bounce off, dithering I check only if my session was in 24 bit and I'm
converting it to 16, and Add to iTunes Library. For the "Where" option at the top I put
mine in the Music folder.

8. Since I used the green loop area selector in the Arrange window, and left it activated,
that automatically set my "Start" and "End" positions for my bounce.

9. Click Bounce, and let Logic/mac do it's thing.

   Hope this helps!

        Pete

Although Logic is reasonably stable for me now, at various times its been
extremely unstable for me too. I do everything humanly possible to maintain a
stable system including having a separate boot drive just for Logic. The only
weak point is that I use Kingston ram (for Apple) instead of Apple certified. But
the Apple ram is priced like cold pressed latinum krugerands. So what can a
reasonable person do?

Its sorta stable now. Yesterday it gave me a warning that various plugins are
conflicting (but wouldn't say which ones) and then the whole show went south.
Its surprising that Logic, unlike many other programs, doesn't seem to keep
backup in cases of crashes. So you gotta ride the "command S" key - the poor'
man's autobackup. I also try to use more hardware synths, and bounce down
tracks with plugs.

Regarding MP3's - just bounce to AIFF, then import that into Itunes, and
convert there.

The left strip is the channel for the selected track. The right
strip is the main output, and will show up on the right for each
track using that output. It's just like the main on a mixer.

Going up from the fader on each audio object, you have
1. the circle with a number in it. That's the pan rotor.
2. Automation mode. Says "off" if you are not automating that
track. Click and hold makes a menu to select the automation mode you
want (Read, Write, Latch, Touch)
3. Core Audio object name.
4. Routing for output. Not a button. Usually says "Out 1-2".

Hopefully one of those is the output number you are referring to.

That's the automation button.

Re: Need Help Creating MP3 from Logic

Hello All again,

Thanks for pointing out the automation feature which I wondered if it
was related to sending the sound outward:)

I am using OS X 10.4.11.

I have 2 GB RAM with my Black Macbook first generation.

My friend is returning home this evening and I am keeping my hands off
in order to avoid going in the wrong direction.

I could create the tracks without a problem but am running into the
problem only when trying to export or bounce the project to a MP3.

Let me add one thing to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

I do not have any vocal parts whatsoever and used the internal
software instruments for creating the various tracks. I can see the
notes created and playback is perfect.

Only one project used an Apple loop, but the same problem is happening
with everything related to creating the MP3s or getting the songs to
play within iTunes.

Changing the settings for PCM, MP3, or AIFF and trying to burn a CD
all resulted in hearing a dull cowbell sound and finding out that the
program crashed or I have to do a Force Quit.

Any ideas now?

This is clearly the most nagging thing experienced with LE 8.

But it too shall pass:)

Thanks again!

Peace,

Roney

Wow....this (see emphasized below) is interesting because everytime it crashes, my Logic 8 announces to me that there is a version of my file that crashed labeled "file.crash.logic" --- something like that. Are we talking about the same thing?
