tap tempo/beat matching?

tap tempo/beat matching?

2011-01-11 by k_e_moeller

I have some recorded live tracks I wish to orchestrate. I know that I could simply start adding software instrument tracks, but I may eventually want to print these out.. possibly by exporting to Finale, which I don't yet own.

The issue is these rock tracks were not played to a click, so I know they're gonna drift.

Is there a feature such as tap tempo (found in MOTU Performer) in Logic? I will need to be able to define the bars and beats all the way through each of these songs.

thanks!

Yes. There looks to be a new way of beat matching, which I have not investigated, but here's the old way that I've used for years:

1. Go through the song and record a midi part on whatever beat division you want. The more tempo fluctuations the smaller division you want, but for rock, I would just use whole notes. I usually do it by ear first, then go back and edit the midi file for any beats I missed.

2. Move all midi and audio that is presently in sync to the beginning of measure 1

3. Show the beat mapping global track (view - configure global tracks)

4. Select midi guide track you recorded and click on "Beats from Region" in the beat mapping.

I don't have Logic in front of me, but I think that's the whole process. If you already have some midi tracks recorded in sync with the audio, you want to protect them, and things can go horribly wrong with them, so if possible, do the beat mapping before adding any midi, just to be safe.

Like I said, there's probably an easier way now, but I just did this last week and it worked as always.

I'm stil using v.8, so don't know if anything has changed in v.9

Don't use performer so not sure what you mean by Tap Tempo but in Logic 9 there are ways of "Beat Matching"
So if that is what you want yep it can be done.. You can manually adjust the music or used a beat mapping to a "master" track feature which is a little more automated but will likely need a little adjustment.

It is not hard but you probably need to check the doco's to see the process as explaining them and the options here would take a little time..
Look up "Flextime" for a start and also "Quantisation" and "Beat Mapping"

You used to make a midi guide track and play a beat, then map to tempo.
the new global track method works better I guess - but you can get a
lot of spurious hits. there is this process of dragging a transient to
a bar or beat and then everything adjusts. After you get the tempo map
you might want to smooth it out make less abrupt changes. I am not sure
whole process rarely gives satisfactory results though.

I'm using Logic 8.

There is no 'flextime' or 'beat matching' in 8 but there IS 'tap tempo'!

Page 652 of the main manual shows how to create a tempo map by tapping on a MIDI instrument. If I stop tapping it keeps going at the last tempo.

Looks like it should work.

thx

Yes that will work - and is/was a part of logic for many years. hitting
a midi key though might have latency and you might be off by 20ms, and
its just hard to get it totally right. but get it a try.
