I'm just getting started with QTR and am using it to build B/W ICC profiles. It seems odd to me that the targets all have a maximum black level of 8. Is there a reason there is no level 0 on the targets? Thanks! Dave

Hi Dave, You are right they should be RGB=0 or K=100. It sounds like the file was somehow changed via color management. Check the Photoshop Color Settings to make sure you do not have an automatic conversion somewhere. You should do anything to a target except read it in and print. No sizing, no convert profile or convert to RGB. It's OK. I had my CS2 palette options set to "proof color" instead of "actual color". Actual color correctly reads as K=100%. Sorry for the false alarm, and thanks for the reply! When I print the 21 step.psd step wedge on Crane's
Museo Silver
rag I get a range of log-d from a dmax of 2.04 at 100%
black
to a reflection log-d of -0.04 which seems respectable
enough,
but in that file below the percent K numbers is
another series
of numbers ranging from 160 at 100 % K to zero at zero
%
K. What do these numbers stand for?
The wedge in question is located in CurveDesign/images

The 21step file goes way back. Then we were all using only matte papers. The numbers are typical densities of matte paper. Just ignore them for photo papers. Help!!!!
I need an instruction manual for dummies regarding
QuadTone RIP.
I am attempting to print B&W with an Epson 2200 on
Enhanced Matte paper and have the setting as follows
in QT:
Printer: Epson 2200
Printing Model Quad2200
Media Type: Matte Paper
Curve 1: UC-EEnhMatter cool
Curve 2: UC-EEnhMatte-coolSe
Curve 3: UC-EEnhMatte-warm
Resolution: 2880dpi
Speed: Bi-directional
Curve 1: Highlights=45, Midtones 30 and shadows 51
Ink limit -45
Gamma -12
Ink calibration mode 85
I'm sure people vary the settings some for personal
taste but could some experience users please share
with me your settings?
Greatly appreciate all your help.

Ken, you will get more useful response if you will explain in more details, what is the problem that you experience. --Sergei --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Ken Barrett <kenbarrett@...> wrote: > > Help!!!!

Its likely that the curves provided were for 1440 dpi rather than 2880. (I don't have a 2200, but I think in general the 1440 dpi setting is most commonly used). There is no such thing as "correct". Does it produce the result you want? If so, then its "correct". The documentation gives a good explanation of what the various settings do and don't do. If there was such a thing as "correct" settings, then there would not be much use for this program. It gives the user fine control of the output, and as a direct consequence, the user has to understand the controls available. Read the manual, try a few adjustments, and find out what works for your setup and requirements. Steve

Serge, I'm new to this, too, but I suspect Ken is right. When I used 2880 with one of the other profiles provided by the QuadTone RIP my print came out way too dark. At 1440 it was just right. This is probably covered in the documentation, but you know how that goes. Doug --- In QuadtoneRIP@yahoogroups.com, Mike Finley <mike@...> wrote:

That could be one of the problems i'm having.
I'll try 1440dpi. I just assumed 2880 dpi would be
better.

I was hoping that someone could shorten the trial and
error cycle by suggesting a change in my current
settings as follows:
Printer: Epson 2200
Printing Model Quad2200
Media Type: Matte Paper
Curve 1: UC-EEnhMatter cool
Curve 2: UC-EEnhMatte- coolSe
Curve 3: UC-EEnhMatte- warm
Resolution: 2880dpi
Speed: Bi-directional
Curve 1: Highlights=45, Midtones 30 and shadows 51
Ink limit -45
Gamma -12
Ink calibration mode 85
