Calibrating for Ultrachrome inks

Calibrating for Ultrachrome inks

2009-03-05 by michaeldsji

This is my first attempt to use QuadTone RIP to calibrate and linearize my Epson 3800 using Ultrachrome K3 inks.

I've downloaded and printed lots of manuals and guides that describe the process, but the one that seems to be the most useful and the most up-to-date is the the "QuadToneRIP 2.5 Calibration" 5-page guide on the quadtone.com site.

I'm only half-way through the process and calculating the numbers. Next step is linearization, but I haven't figured that part out yet.

Am I using the best guide to walk me through this process? Any suggestions?

I am using: MacOSX 10.5, Datacolor Spyder Elite and Print, Pshop CS3. My preferred paper stock is Harman Glossy FB Ai.

Thanks!

I'd like to add to my original post:

It seems that the 26-page "Quad Tone RIP User Guide" also available from the QuadtoneRip web site is the most complete guide to the Calibration and Linearization process. However I find that it is (a) not Mac-oriented and thus somewhat difficult to translate some of the steps, and (b) almost 4 years old and maybe not up-to-date with the current downloads and software/hardware changes.

A friend of mine and I spent hours pulling our hair out trying to work through even printing our first set of calibration prints until we realized whole pages in the guide could be skipped by just opening up the Ink Pattern Page in Pshop and using the Print command to proceed. Ouch!

The "Basic Tutorial QuadTone RIP on Mac OS X" guide is very useful but only covers the printing of an image through Pshop and the QuadTone driver. It stops short of calibration and linearization.

So... I just wanted to append my previous message to let you all know that I am familiar with these guides but have found them to be tough to understand and translate, and somewhat of a dead-end for me.

Again, thank you for any help and assistance.

Can you describe a bit more what problems you're having? Have you
already figured out the ink limits? Are you just looking to linearize?

Please let me butt in here. What is missing, and what I would dearly love to have, is a guide **for beginners** on how and when to calibrate and linearize (and everything else one can do with QTR).

I've used QTR without the calibration/linearization using Epson inksets, and read what information I can find, and I am quite sure I am not making the best use of the product. Unfortunately all the guides and other howto information I can find are rather sketchy and generally assume you already understand the process and why and when to use it.

Wouldn't someone like to invest an evening in writing up a description newbies can follow? For both Windows and Mac? Please pretty please?

I think you are not alone with this problem Susan.
I also would like to understand the process as I understand the whys and whens of the Zone System.
After using lots of ink and paper trying to figure out how to use QTR properly I quit.
I still read the postings hoping that some day through reading and reading I'll be enlightened ("aha!!!") but am not using this product just now.
I also suspect (after reading their postings) that some people are not using it efficiently and probably wrong. Just doing "something" with it.

May I join you in your request for a guide **for beginners**?

As a general idea:
For example the Spyder3 Print. They have an AWESOME guide.
It is very well structured. **You understand what you are doing.**

Something like that, just a .pdf, without the bells and whistles?

Jorge

Try and read up threads by Randy Ranchier, he went through the basics

 Of course I can:

But first--I agree with Susan & Jorge that a beginner's guide, for both Mac and Windows users, would be a welcome addition. I will look up Randy's messages, but OY! that will be a pain to find the info that I need...

That said, here's where I stand with the process so far. I have gotten through page 4 of the 5-page "QuadToneRIP 2.5 Calibration" guide. I got the math right, but I had to figure out that to insert the values I had to first duplicate a profile in the Profiles>3800-UC folder and open it in a text editor. Okay--done that. (One question: Why did I have to change the N_OF_GRAY_PARTS value from 3 to 4?)

Now what do I do with this new profile? Page 5 of this guide is completely unintelligible to me (and, believe me, I'm no dummy!) and I don't know if there is more to the process, or...?

So what do I do with this new profile? Do I create an .icc file? If so, how? Does it get installed in any special manner? All of this seems to be way different than in the QuadTone RIP guide by Moore.

Any directions for me?

Thanks!

You know what would be great is if someone is putting together this beginners guide they could post it in the files section of this group...

I don't know if it would be useful but what do people think about the idea of an actual walkthrough of the steps over a skype conference or something ? I'm not qualified to do it myself but it may help some of us if an 'expert' could do this ? maybe a couple of 30 minute sessions over a few weeks or something ? Roy, would you be willing to do this ?
