Yes I can confirm this. Last week I had created a custom paper for printing a panorama on my epson 3800. The resulting print came out fine (42x120cm).

After this printing session I upgraded to 10.6.5. Then(but possibly not related) I tried to print a second copy of this same image.
I noticed this:

The custom paper I had defined was greyed out in the list, but can still be selected in the 'manage custom sizes' dialog. In this dialog the QUOD3800 printer has dissappeared from the dropdown menu, were you set the margins. Reinstalling QTR over the existing installation did not change anything.

Although, after selecting the paper at 'manage custom sizes', the image and paper show ok in the print preview in photoshop it is not possible to print it entirely anymore. Only a small portion of the images (± letter size) was printed on the top right of the large sheet.

I think this has something to do with default margins QTR expects. I did fall back on the default epson values (0,32 cm on all sides) but this might not be right for QTR

Any ideas about what to do next? Other than completely uninstalling and resetting this printer.

I've started looking into this. Kees's assessment is right on target.
 The whole custom size feature
seems to be a problem. From what I've seen so far QTR is not the only
driver which shows this.
All my custom sizes are grayed out even with Epson drivers and HP
drivers. I've looked at the
Apple discussion boards and there's a fair amount of talk about
printing issues with 10.6.5.

well if you are lucky enough to not yet have done the OS update... continue to hold off on it...

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Custom size has been grayed out after upgraded to 10.6.5

Yes. I updated my 10.5.8 OS X Server machine to cups 1.4.5 for the 10.6.5 transition. (I like to keep my CUPs versions the same between client and server.)

And on the server, QTR cannot use/make custom paper sizes. So this is a cups thing it looks like to me.

Well. Downgrading from Cups 1.4.5 to Cups 1.4.4 on OS X 10.6.5 certainly doesn't work . . . . Although you can certainly add/use custom paper sizes in 10.6.5/cups1.4.4, there is an architecture miss-match bug that keeps popping up every 10 seconds. Very annoying.

So it's confirmed though. It's a bug between cups/qtr and not the rest of the OS.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Custom size has been grayed out after upgraded to 10.6.5

Solution to the Custom Paper Size stuff:

1. Download xcode dev tools.
2. Downgrade to cups 1.4.4 (from source)
3. Upgrade to cups 1.4.5 (from source)
4. Delete anything in /Library/LaunchAgents (the cups from source doesn't like anything in here. Not sure why, but if you don't have any wicked important stuff launching from that folder than it will speed up your computer to clear it out anyway. Hopefully the 10.6.6 update will clear all this up.)

I am now running Cups 1.4.5 and OS X 10.6.5 and printing with custom paper sizes out of QTR again. So this must be some default permission thing that the 10.6.5 upgrade implemented in its own upgrade of cups 1.4.5 in order to keep LaunchAgents from screwing up.

all the best,
Walker

Thanks for the workaround, Walker. I have been printing K7 on a 4880 through Lightroom 2.7 / 3 and ran into the same issue w/ the recent Apple upgrade. In my case, nothing prints except letter size. I tried selecting tabloid, which is not a custom size, and still got a letter-sized piece of the larger print. I am able to access and create custom page sizes in LR, but when the print command is sent, the Get Info button on the printer dialogue box reveals that the page size received is letter.

Wish I had enough command-line expertise to replace cups as you suggest, but I did replace the pstops file with an earlier version through Time Machine - as suggested by someone on the Apple 10.6.5 printing forum. Unfortunately, that solution does not work for me.

The question: for X11-challenged folks like myself, are there other cups files that could be replaced with earlier versions through Time Machine — perhaps resulting in a fix?

Well. As far as I can tell, the new version of CUPs is pretty darn integral to the new version of Snow Leopard. And in fact, 10.6.5 doesn't play very well with cups 1.4.5 installed via command line (though I didn't test compiling it specifically for intel chips running 64bit) So it looks to me like it was some sort of implementation than Apple did with their packaging of CUPs into their massive OS upgrade (10.6.5)

10.6.5 screwed up all sorts of other printing things too with EU 4800 drivers, printserver issues, etc. But it did let CS5 print correctly with grayscale ICC profiles!!! Yay!

The procedure for installing cups from command line is rather simple.

1. Get a free developer account with Apple.
2. Download xcode and install.
3. download cups 1.4.5 source. (www.cups.org)
4. Un-compress the file and open Terminal.
5. type: cd and a space and then drag the folder icon over the terminal window and hit enter.
6. Type sudo ./configure
7. sudo make
8. sudo make install

This will install cups 1.4.5 from source.

I actually went back and installed 1.4.4 and then re-installed 1.4.5 and this seemed to work. Messed up some other parts of the system though so I wouldn't totally recommend it if you don't have a time machine backup.

all the best,
Walker

Hi Roy,

Just ran into this issue after happily printing via QTR to my Epson 1400 prior to the 10.6.5 upgrade. Tried to print a 10x20 inch image centered on 12x22 inch custom size paper using LR3.3beta. The printed result was an 8.25x10.75 inch crop in the upper left corner of the paper. Printing to PDF or Preview shows the correct layout and size, but can't access custom paper size to make the print from Preview. I can print to custom sizes like this using the Epson 1400 driver in LR without any problems. Is there a work around for this issue when using QTR?

Thanks,
Carl

Hi Carl,

This is a nasty one. I can't see why QTR is different than the other drivers.
It seems that all the custom sizes go back to the default -- Letter size.
I think all the builtin sizes do work so you might be able to use 13x44 and
position the image appropriately. If you are using roll paper you'll need to
cut it.

Thanks for the reply Roy. I can get by with the standard sizes for most of my small prints with QTR using the 1400 and I'll try for your suggestion for the occasional custom larger prints. I wonder what other gremlins are hiding in 10.6.5.

Roy,

I'm not sure if it helps, and I've not witnessed this particular problem first hand, but it sounds like the behavior I have seen from the Epson 3800 driver when giving it a custom paper size larger than what it can handle (17x35 for example). I've also seen it when the orientation was incorrect (22x17 instead of 17x22).

No error message, just prints an 8x10ish chunk of the image on part of the paper, really annoying.

For the 3800, disabling 'Auto Paper Detection' on the printer resolved this
issue for me. I can't comment on the 1400 - I don't know if it even has the
paper detect feature.

developer.apple.com

You need a free developer account with Apple.

Please read the more recent post of mine (another related thread). This has better instructions.

all the best,

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Custom size has been grayed out after upgraded to 10.6.5

2010-12-02 by Joel Conison

I followed Walters other post with more explanation and it worked. I had a power failure due to weather and when I restarted custom sizes was not available. I followed the same instructions, leaving Terminal app open and restarted (the same way I did the first time when it worked). Now custom sizes again is not available. By the way the printer was on. I did it again with the printer off & closed the Terminal app, then restarted. Again, custom sizes are not available.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks
Joel
