In order to correct the custom size issue that occurred with 10.6.5 upgrade. There are two cups files that can be down loaded. One is cups-1.4.4_source.tar.bz2 and cups 1.4.4.source.tar.gz. Which is the correct one? Thanks Joel

Well, since they are the same version, I would hope that they are the same thing, but one is bzip compressed, and one is a gzip compressed. As long as you can uncompress one or the other (using bunzip2 or gunzip or equivalent). They both appear to be source, so it seems probable that you'll have to compile a binary package from them. You probably be better off finding a binary package you can install instead of a source archive. On the other hand, if all that is in these are some definition files, perhaps it doesn't matter. But going on the names of these files alone, it looks like you have to compile them into a binary and install that. Andrew

Andrew, thanks for the info. I'm not quite sure how to compile a binary package, but this is what I did. After I unzipped, it opened a folder (cups-1.4.4z) & as I looked into the folder I found an install -sh 'file'. I double clicked on it & it opened a terminal window and I assume it installed as code came across in the window & at the end stated finished. If this is correct, then I will do the same for the cups 1.4.5 and hope then I will have access to custom sizes. Thanks again joel On Nov 29, 2010, at 5:15 PM, Andrew Sharpe wrote: > > Well, since they are the same version, I would hope that they are the > same thing, but one is bzip compressed, and one is a gzip compressed. Yow. Well, it might have been nice to have seen exactly what that install.sh did, but ok. Next time, you should probably open a terminal window and start the install.sh by hand so you can see if it printed anything "interesting". Andrew, thanks. My question though is this. Should I continue to install the cups-1.4.5source .tar.gz the same way, in order to have my custom sizes option back? joel On Nov 30, 2010, at 12:22 AM, Andrew Sharpe wrote: > Yow. Dear QTR users. Today I re-installed cups from source on my intel iMac and it fixes the problem with no other errors. This is how it's done on intel 64bit machines. 1. Get a free developer account with Apple. 2. Download xcode and install. 3. download both source files (1.4.4 and 1.4.5) from cups.org (www.cups.org) 4. Un-compress the files and open the Terminal app. 5. Type: cd and a space and then drag the 1.4.4 folder icon over the terminal window and hit enter. 6. Type sudo ./configure --arch-withflags="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" 7. sudo -B make install 8. Type: cd and a space and then drag the 1.4.5 folder icon over the terminal window and hit enter. 9. Type sudo ./configure --arch-withflags="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" 10. sudo -B make install 11. Restart your computer. This works for me. It might sound a bit complicated, but it seems to work and (if you already have xcode installed) you can get it fixed in about 10 minutes. I experimented with building a .pkg installer for an easier fix, but I think the method described above is safer. Hopefully 10.6.6 update will fix this problem. All the best, Walker [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Walter, You are the man! Can't extend enough thanks. The majority of my prints are custom size & the prospect of reinstalling the OS was not a pretty one. Again, my heart felt THANKS. Hi Walker, Can you also confirm that the QTR printer(s) reappear in the drop down list at 'manage custom sizes' after this fix? Strange thing though that only the QTR printers disappeared and not the epson AND gutenprint printers. By the way did someone file a bug report at apple?
