My theremin got Maggied

My theremin got Maggied

2006-12-12 by David V

Hello all,

Well, Maggie, my 2 1/2 year old daughter, finally did my theremin real
damage. I had it on a mic stand in the studio, and had forgotten to put
it away, and Maggie knocked it over. It went into the wall, pitch rod
first, and ripped the entire right end of my Big Briar Etherwave
standard off, pitch rod and all. It appears to be a clean break, with
just the wire from the pitch rod sticking out the "inside" side of the
right panel.

How difficult will this be to fix? Should I attempt it myself or should
I take it to a service center?

David,

You should be able to glue the wood together with white (Elmer's)
glue. Be sure that the glue has not been stored where it could have
frozen then thawed out. If in doubt, purchase new glue. You will
need to clamp it down -- if you have a friend who is a woodworker or
model builder that would be a good resource. When you clamp the panel
back to the cabinet, use a damp cloth to wipe away any excess glue.

As far as the electrical part of the work, if it is just one wire that
broke you should be able to resolder it.

Hope this info is useful. Sorry to hear that your Theremin is damaged.

How about posting some photos of the damage to your website? It could be
just cosmetic (proper wood glue -- the yellow stuff -- would take care of
the case) and the rod could be fixed and the wire resoldered. But if it's
hidden, it could be more. Check the circuit board for cracks where it's
mounted and where the pitch rod wire is. In any case, photos please! :)

Hey David,

Same thing happened to me in 2001, during a gig. A
Chinese parade dragon decided it would be cute to
"eat" my theremin in front of 2000 paying customers.

I was very lucky. Back then, Bob Moog still took
service calls himself and talked me through soldering
it back together. As he explained, that's just a
simple connection, so don't be worried.

As for the cabinet, I re-nailed it and glued it for
extra measure.

But if you are worried, call up Moog and ask their
advice. They were helpful back then and should be
today.

Goodaruck!

wood glue and some clamps to repair the broken wood -
once it is set, just resolder the wire to the antenna.

the real fun starts if the trim pots have gotten
readjusted by the impact, since i use a spring
antenna, i don't have to worry about that since i can
just squeeze or stretch it to make the thing playable
- damn the trim pots.

you may consider seizing upon this as an opportunity
to justify the purchase of a spare or a replacement,
and then tell maggie, once you have repaired the
broken theremin, in all seriousness, that since she
broke the theremin, now she has to play it.

the look on the child's face will be priceless.

in a couple of years, you can do theremin duos.

Hello!

I just got invited to play my theremin at "Spitz" in London on January
19th, if any of you within the geographic vicinity might have
additional suggestions for concert possiblities around that time,
please pass it on.
