Yamaha TX81Z Presets

Yamaha TX81Z Presets

2008-04-29 by Jim Wicked

I just uploaded the files for the TX81Z to be controlled via a BCR2000
along with the PDF files for the layouts. They're in French, but
they're pretty easy to figure out as the abbreviations and conventions
are pretty much the same. If you download and use them, is there any
way you can get back to me on the functionality? I tried them out
last night, but with no success, however I'm wondering if something is
wrong with my BCR2000 because when creating a preset for an Alpha
Juno, the end result didn't work in spite of the fact that it has been
proven that it should work. Thanks, all!

Thanks for that. Is it possible for you to shift them into the Presets
directory?

I have placed a copy of the TX8z manual in a new TX81z directory in the
Preset directory
You should find the Voice Edit Parameters on page 74. These should help
you sort what controls do what.
You could look at the Sysex (also in the manual ) in the BCR tx
statements to make sure.

I had a quick look but I only have a TQ5.
It is supposed to use the same sysex so I'll try to sort it out and let
you know.

Is it possible to get the URL of the French site to acknowledge their
ownership of the material?

Thanks

Anyone know if these would work on a WX11? Esoteric, I know...
It's a 4 op FM synth and can take the same presets as the TX81Z, so
maybe -
I guess I'll get it wired up and try.
Any positive reports on the TX81Z would help spur me along!

cheers,

Do you mean the DX11 or the WT11? The WX11 is a MIDI saxophone... ;-)
The DX11 should be compatible to the TX81Z, as it was it's keyboard
version, but I do not know the WT11's sound architecture.

Something different: In the early nineties I once tried to program my
Kawai MM-16 controller for my TX81Z, I found out that there were some
errors in the sysex documentation of the manual. They mischanged some
parameters for one operator with the parameters of another...

I have a TX81Z, but I have a BCF, not BCR. From what I read, BCR configs should also work in a BCF. Is that true?

I'll try these out if so.

Thanks for the notice and efforts!!!

yes, sorry, the WT11!
It's the tone generator I got with my second-hand wx11 electronic wind
instrument, and it's a little beaut.

It can load voices straight from a DX11 or TX81Z, but the WT11 has
extremely limited editing capabilities itself.
Hm, reading the manual it says it is possible to edit a performance
using an external MIDI device, e.g. DX11.

Now I just have to wire this up with 2 midi cables and a broken BCR
usb connection...
Send preset, reconnect!

No, I won't move them because I'm full of hate and spite!

As for crediting the originators. Well... they're French and don't
deserve any sort of credit as is the nature of their very existence!

I'm thinking the answer would be no because of the number of controls.
It should be easy to translate them between each other using that BCR
Manager program, though (haven't tried it myself.)

Assuming that the TX81Z editor is valid, it should work just fine (the
site I ripped them off from was from an artist that used it regularly,
so if there's anything wrong, it's probably with my BCR2000.)

If the WT11 can take TX81Z patches, I don't foresee any problems.
I've got a YS200 keyboard that takes the same patches as the TX81Z,
and though I still haven't gotten my BCR2000 to work properly in this
respect, I've got a software patch editor which works fine on both the
YS200 and the TX81Z. Yamaha is pretty good about cross-integration
with the different FM synths. I just hope somebody gets the BCR2000
to work for this function and that it is just my particular unit
that's malfunctioning. I don't mind buying another one, but
otherwise, FM synthesis is going to have to take a permanent leave of
absence from my studio because I'm not going to be using a computer in
there anymore.

Re: Yamaha TX81Z Presets

The Tx81z (or TQ5 in my case) sysex parameter format

$F0 sysex start
$43 Yamaha
$1n Sub status (TX81 types) where s = channel
$12 Voice or $13 additional voice parameters
value
$F7

If you have a look at the sysex in the preset, it is sending the 3rd
byte of $1A

Is your TX set up to be channel 10?

Re: Yamaha TX81Z Presets

2008-04-30 by Jim Wicked

I didn't realize that Yamaha's SysEx was channel dependent. (You'll
have to excuse me, but I'm still a newb to SysEx programming, hence
why I've been looking for presets instead of making my own. If these
were CC's or NRPN, I'd have no trouble, but SysEx just pisses me off
to no end.) My YS200 is set to channel 16 currently, but when I get
home, I can definitely give channel 10 a shot and see what happens.
Would the TX's recognize SysEx with the channel bytes stripped so that
way somebody could reprogram the TX81Z presets to be a little more
universal?

Thanks a ton for your help. Thank god somebody can wrap their head
around SysEx. (I figured out FM synthesis, do I really need more
complex mathematical languages laid on me!?)

Re: Yamaha TX81Z Presets

2008-04-30 by rpcfender

Most sysex headers have a byte to ID the manufacturer, the device and
device ID, but it is really up to the manufacture what he/she wants to
put in the sysex message.

If you had 2 TX81z with Midi going in one and through to the other, it
would be a good idea to be able to send sysex to one and not the other.

Early sysex used the Midi channel in the device byte, then came the
device ID, then the common channel. It is very flexible but very
confusing .

I have an old TQ5 sitting about so I dragged it out and wrote a preset
for it.
The sysex is the same for the TX81z but the TQ5 has a few more
features, like a pitch envelope and some FX stuff.

It should work for your TX81z on channel 1.

It's in the files section - in the the preset folder under TQ5.

Nope. Not afraid of them. Just don't like them. They've got a
better economy going right now than Amerikkka has, so it is my
patriotic duty to hate them.

I did some more tweaking with the BCR2000 last night. Tried every
channel, used BC Manager to mess with the SysEx a little bit, and then
for the final test, I reprogrammed it to send a mod wheel controller
to the YS200... none of the above worked. It's my BCR2000 afterall.
For some reason, it still works via USB, and I feel that I'm done
with FM synthesis for a while anyway (at least until I can find a
DX200 again), so I'm just going to sell the YS200 and get some more
analogs. Thanks a ton for the help, though!
