help with BCR2000 on OS X, please!

2014-01-14 by <piatti@...>

Hello group!
I just received my bcr2000 yesterday used from a friendly chap in New Jersey, but I'm having a bit of trouble here on the setup. I am running os x 10.8.5, primarily using ableton. Ableton recognizes the controller, but the controller is stuck on "p-16". When I press the preset arrows, it stays at p-16. Also, the first and last encoders of the first row in the bottom three encoder rows do not display any lights. What would be the best way to proceed so I can start from scratch and build my own presets?

Thank you, in advance!

Hi
what is most likely is that P-16 preset has been programmed to use the < and > as extra Midi buttons.

As you want to program the BC anyway, I would go over to Mark's web site and download his editor and the documentation that comes with it.

Although it is currently for PC as far as I understand you can run it under OSX with an windows emulator.
Join Mark's forum and say 'Hi'

All the best

Just to weigh in on emulators. I'm running OS X and I was never ever ever able to get BCManager to communicate with my BCF2000 using WINE due to some sort of issue with USB.

What DOES work is running BCManager in WINE on Linux (I use Ubuntu), which you can run on OS X in a virtual machine (I use Oracle's VMWare). It's not hard, just a sort of long process of installing stuff (including a a separate USB driver for VMWare... :P)

If you're not really in the mood and don't need to use BCManager right away, I was able to resolve a similar problem by restoring the factory default presets via SysEx.

I was feeling a bit bitter about the world today until I saw your kind responses. Thanks for that. Yes, I did try running bcmanager through Wine, but it cannot detect the unit, probably due to a usb midi driver or something like that. John, so you're saying that I can use os x to run vmware, to run linux, to run wine to run the windows version of bcmanager? That sounds like quite a lot! When you use sysex librarian, what port do you choose for the bcr? Does it make a difference if you choose port 1, 2, or 3?

Thanks again!!!

How I did this in Linux was to realize the main thing I wanted Marks tool for was panel editing. So I didnt worry about USB but instead just edit, save sysex, then use a different tool to load sysex to the BCR.

You may want to trial if this works for you.

I imagine it was Port 1 which I'm pretty sure is the USB port? I wonder if the other ports correspond to other MIDI interfaces on your system... sorry I'm being so vague. From what I understand, you can't really "brick" your device via non-firmware SysEx activities, so I wouldn't stress too much about it.

Also, Steve's idea about just using BCManager to create sysex files is excellent and one that didn't really occur to me, because I was also trying to use his manager for the Roland D5, for which instant feedback is indeed more crucial...!

Steve,
I tried using the "factory presets" and that assembled everything the way I had expected it when I got the unit, so this helped greatly, thanks! I think for now, I'll stick to that and also using your idea of using bc manager to create presets and the sysex to upload them.

Cheers!
