BC2000 Wiki

2007-12-19 by Martin Klang

Hi all,

recently someone asked if there's a BC 2000 wiki, it got me thinking
that it would be a nice way to organise the wealth of information
that is held by people in this group. The files area and mailing list
are both good, but it can be difficult to find the information that
you need - especially for new users.
I've set up and hosted a number of wiki's in the past, of different
flavours, and I could do the same for the bc 2000 community if there
is sufficient interest. So basically this email is to gauge what
people think:

Would a wiki be something that you would like to use?

Can you see yourself editing/administering a bc2000 wiki?

A wiki system that I think would be good is mediawiki, same as
wikipedia are using - here's one I'm hosting now:
http://wiki.hacklab.org.uk/

cheers,

/m

Can't seem to be able to create a new account on
http://wiki.hacklab.org.uk , the register link goes to a login page with
no register form, but asks me to fill 'the form below' in... ?

I think that a wiki would be a great idea. of course a well organized wiki is important. I'm not sure that I would be doing much editing/administrating as I feel that many of the users here on this group are light years beyond me in bc knowledge.

I would be happy to help. Revise and edit my docs and provide some
help for my programs. I looked at you accounts page. How are we going
to pay for this?

John, you should chip in to any thread and give your 2cents worth.
This is the nature of these groups. I feel my enthusiasm has perhaps
dominated here and this is not what I wanted and so I might hang back
a bit.
I am learning as much as any of you (particularly as Behringer is not
very forthcoming) and I make some clanger of mistakes at times.

For a start compare my notes to Mark's excellent implementation doc.
Very different style, but with some information in common. Some will
get more information from one style and others will prefer the other
style. That's why we have so many books on the same subject.

The other thing is that people are doing all sorts of things with
these units. When questions come up I am amazed at what they are
trying to do and I course I want to try to do it as well. A great
resource of ideas.

So I would encourage everyone to offer ideas and opinions. It's very
friendly here and if anyone gave you a hard time I'm sure they would
be treated accordingly.

All the best

Royce

The Wiki is a great idea.

I think if it gathers and organizes all the technical info and spares the dialog, which can remain here, it would be perfect.

Re: [bc2000] Re:BC2000 Wiki

It seems from the feedback that people are interested and keen to
help out, so I've set up a wiki space here:
http://bc2000.pingdynasty.com/

it should be fully functional though empty!

To edit and add pages you need to create an account and have your
email address confirmed:
1) go to log in / create account
2) create a new account and provide your email address
3) go to preferences
4) choose 'confirm your email address' and follow the instructions.

Do let me know if you have any problems with the setup.

best regards,

/m

Re: [bc2000] Re: BC2000 Wiki

2008-01-04 by Martin Klang

It's free, of course, I couldn't charge for something like this.

I've made some updates to put a structure in place, similar to what
k0mp0 has suggested, though bare bones still.
I don't know my way around the files area, and not sure what I'm
allowed to upload.

Currently there's only a software and a documentation section.
It would be nice to add a 'cookbook', with easy instructions for
doing common tasks, stuff that people ask about on the list
(resetting units, etc). And places to put drivers, templates, presets
etc...

so, get yourself an account at http://bc2000.pingdynasty.com/ and
start contributing!

cheers,

Martin,

There's a great tutorial out there that our fearless leader "rpcfender" wrote on scripting. If he agrees, that might be a good start for the cookbook. You could port it to the Wiki, maybe break it up into modules, etc.

Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

Hi Steve,
I uploaded a slightly revised version, but I'm having a bit of trouble
with the formatting Wiki style
Feel free to edit it and make it look presentable. At the moment it
looks like a wordy essay that no one would want to read.

The wiki format takes a little getting used to. It's great for
quickly and easily creating new content, not so great for conversions
of existing content.
There's an article here that might help:
http://openwetware.org/wiki/Converting_documents_to_mediawiki_markup
I'm not sure what you wrote the document in, do you have a Word file
for it? If yes, I could have a look at converting it if you send the
word file to me.
It would be a great doc to have online, I can also help out with
reformatting it manually if need be (though I'm no wiki expert).

cheers,

/m

ps you can find the wiki user guide if you go to the About page.

Thanks, I hope to get at look at it soon.

It's in Word. I've emailed it to you.

Thanks for the help

I think you can post standard HTML into Wikis. If so, then check out KompoZer. It's a GNU action that cleans up the bugs in the Mozilla Nvu wysiwyg HTML editor.

This means that you can work in KompoZer almost exactly like in Word and then paste that code into the Wiki page.

But wikis are really easy to write and edit. Rather than I write about it, just go here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial

Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

Re: BC2000 Wiki

Thanks guys, I am slowly getting the hang of the Wiki editor.
There are couple of pages up now, so go have a look and feel free to
edit/add whatever you think will be helpful to someone.

How about a "Just unpacked it and I haven't got a clue" page.
Or "What editor should I use?" for PC/Mac Graphic/Script
Or "how do I get this thing to talk to Sonar....?"
Or "how do I get this thing to talk to Cuebase....?"
Or "how do I get this thing to talk to Logic....?"
Or "how do I get this thing to talk to Live....?"
...etc
How about a page of "Crazy uses for the BC" - polite ones , of course.

There have been heaps of stuff that we have been though here.
It would be great to consolidate the trials and the solutions in one spot.

All the best
Royce

Royce, it looks great, good work.
I'm still a bit of a BC2000 newbie myself, but your ideas sound very
good to me.
Pages on using the bc's with different software packages, and
hardware, would be nice, and would provide a place to put things like
presets etc.
So let's all join in and help put the info up there!
