Comparing patch readings

Comparing patch readings

2006-10-07 by Mike Johnson

I uploaded a small program to compare two sets of PrintFix PRO patch
readings.

It highlights the patches that are different between two sets of
readings, so that you can re-read those patches. It seems from reading
on the internet that Delta-E of less than 2 is good, but more than 6 is
probably bad. Hopefully it's easy to see how to use the program.

It needs Windows 2000 or XP and .Net 2.0

I'm using PrintFix PRO version 1.1.1, the data file format may be
different on other versions so it might not work.

I only spent a few evenings writing this in C# so it's not perfect, but
I've found it useful to get rid of bad readings before using average,
or to check if the ink needs longer to dry.

Hi Mike,

Appreciate your efforts. Where might I download this. I was hoping
ColorVision might include something like this in their software.
Thanks,
Paul

It's in the Files section of this group:

I haven't tried it as I'm on a Mac.

Mike,

What a killer ap. Works very well. Appreciate being able to browse to
the files to compare, and bingo, the work is done.
Thanks for sharing this.

For Mac“s

Thanks Mike! Have tried it briefly and works like a charm - nice and
simple & no hassle :=) I will use this tool often!

As has been mentioned here earlier GretagMacbeth has a little piece
of freeware that can do the same comparison, and its also in Mac
version :

One of our brothers on this list has a short essay on the matter:

Kind Regards

Niels

We certainly would consider it; but it requires reading everything twice. Generally, reading it carefully once is a quicker, more effective solution. How is it that some people make so many reading mistakes? I have to be carrying on a pretty distracting conversation at the same time I'm measuring to get any errors at all...

Hi David,

Yes, I do read each patch set twice. Could buy more expensive
equipment with readers and averaging included, but by reading 2x and
comparing I am pretty certain I can get a good profile. (I have yet
to find a significant difference however) (Also still have to add 6-
12 Blue on the sliders for most papers to get the yellow tint under
control)

On a different topic. Black point compensation: I have researched
this on the web and still get conflicting answers. Some say BPC
forces profile to deepest black and then maps everything above it.
You alluded to the fact you set the black point with the profile you
create. Should you use BPC with relative colorimetric or perceptual
rendering? The goal being best dmax and good shadow separation.

Thanks,

Paul

RE: [colorvision_group] Re: Comparing patch readings

2006-10-10 by Mike Johnson

Firstly, average is included in the software, that also means reading each patch twice.
;
I think compare is more important than average. If you have no errors then you don't need to average. If you have errors then its better to re-read those patches and fix the errors than to average the errors into the good data.
If you don't know the drying time, then re-reading after a few hours and comparing can show how much of change there is. Also if you need to check if the there is some change due to the printer, ink or paper changing, then compare is useful.
I always find a few patches that have a bigger error than the majority, I don't know why. I find I have to concentrate to get the reader in the patch, so I usually know if a moved it to soon or it did not read the patch. No chance of a conversation. I have white marks on the tip to help and a small light at a shallow angle. I don't know if other tasks in Windows could be causing the error. What do you consider to be an acceptable difference ?
It would be nice to just read all the patches just once, but I find it impossible to spot errors from the coloured patches on screen, and so far I can't see a way to check just one set of readings for an error.
Anyway, the end results seem good, better than my previous profiles.

I am still a relative newbie to this software, but have profiled about
10 papers with 3 inks (canon, epson, mis) and the one thing i found
early on was that printing the target a day ahead and letting it dry
overnight was an excellent practice.

Since i started doing that i have never had a bad profile and am very
pleased with this product!
