You can't put a Yamaha disk into your computer and have it read. But you
can use the dkcopy utility and make a COPY of your disk that the computer
CAN read. Because your Disklavier is an MX100, it will only see 2DD disks
and not 2HD floppies. Buy 2DD floppies from www.shoplet.com or tape over
the bottom right hole of a 2HD diskette and format it as a 720k disk. Also,
you will have to convert all MIDI files to ESEQ files for your Disklavier to
play them.

Remember, the dkcopy utility only works when you reboot your computer in
DOS.

Thank you Carol, so if I want to 1:1 copy my yamaha disc, I must do
it in pure DOS mode with DKcopy utility? but how can I read the disc
content? because I try to use eseq explorer, but the system said the
disk cannot recognize. (I use the program under windows2000). so how
can I put the eseq to the disk.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Read the disklavier disk in computer

2002-01-10 by Carol Beigel

The reason your computer won't see the Yamaha disk is something to do with
the boot sector or whatever it is the computer looks for when it first sees
a disk. The copy utility fixes that on the COPY of the disk.

First, format a blank 720k disk in your computer. Then reboot into DOS
mode. Start the dkvcopy utility and follow the instructions. Make sure you
write protect your Yamaha disk so you don't accidently overwrite it! Make
sure your Yamaha disk plays in your Disklavier - sometimes they go bad so
the copy won't work either. Your computer will be able to see the COPY. You
will see files with the extension .fil These are ESEQ files.

You must use 720 disks. These 2DD disks only have one square hole; 2HD disks
have 2 holes. Sometimes it does not work using the 1.4 disks and taping the
bottom right hole. The particles on these higher density disks are much
finer that the 720 disks. The heads that read 720 k disks are bigger than
the heads that read 1.4 disks.

If you want to put MIDI files onto a disk so your DKV will play them, first
convert them to ESEQ files. Format a 720k disk and copy the new ESEQ files
to it. Use the explorer program per directions.

This should work!

I am told that Windows 2000 does not come with DOS. That is probably your
problem as the DKV utilities, and the Giebler software only work in DOS. I
use an old 386 Toshiba laptop with only a 80 mg hard drive and Windows 3.1
to make disks and copies of disks for my DKV. You can get these really
cheaply now!

Re: [disklavier] Read the disklavier disk in computer

Hi Carol,

I have a Disklavier MPX 100 II. Do you know if it supports midi file ? If it
does, how to copy midi files from PC to the diskette ? I have been using the
Eexplore & Mid2eseq software to convert midi to ESEQ and copy to the floppy.

Thanks & regards,

Sammy

Your MPX100II is the same piano as the MX100II except that is has the Silent
feature. It only supports MIDI format 0 files (as well as ESEQ)and 2DD
disks. Most of the MIDI files you find on the internet are MIDI format 1
files, so you will have to convert them to MIDI format 0 before you can use
them.

All you need to do is format a 2DD disk (720 k,one hole) in IBM format on
your computer. Just drag and drop the MIDI format 0 files onto the disk and
you should be good to go.

Thank you Carol for your prompt response.

Please advise how to tell whether a midi file is format 0 or 1. Is there a
software that can show the file format and how to convert from Midi 1 to 0 ?

Many thanks.

Re: [disklavier] Read the disklavier disk in computer

2002-01-10 by PianoBench@aol.com

Good morning everyone,

In a message dated 1/10/02 11:21:24 AM, Carol writes:

<< Your MPX100II is the same piano as the MX100II except that is has the
Silent

This is an excellent explanation. Let me add that you should avoid putting
anything on the disk other than Type 0 SMFs. Note, also, that the earliest
Mark II Disklaviers have ROM chips that need updating in order to play these
SMFs. I suggest that you try a properly configured disk to see if this works.
If it does not, we may need to determine the version of the ROM chip.

Note, further, that you do not have full use of the various transport contr
ols on the Disklavier or remote when playing SMFs on a Mark II. For example,
the search function does not work for SMFs. In other words, support for SMFs
is not really complete.

Another solution--and a much better one in my opinion--is to have the offical
Mark II-->Mark IIXG upgrade installed. This will give you full support for
both SMF Types 0 and 1, high density disks, and a tone generator (which is
need for so many of the files that you encounter).

A complete upgrade will involve removal of the upper panel of the instrument
in which the control unit is housed, removal of the control unit,
installation of a new panel that has no control unit built in, and new
control unit that either sits on top or that can be mounted beneath the keys.

Regards,
PianoBench

Sometimes the file will say: Song(1).mid which is a MIDI 1 format. All
PianoDisc songs are MIDI 0 files. A MIDI sequencer program like Cakewalk
HOme Studio, or ProAudio Tracks will also tell you what format the MIDI file
is in.

Standard MIDI Format 0 (SMF-0) assembles all MIDI data on a single track,
allowing playback on even the simplest of sequencers or playback devices.
This format also offers the greatest compatibility.

Standard MIDI Format 1 (SMF-1) is capable of handling multiple tracks, and
is designed to work best with sequencers that allow different parts to be
recorded and played back on different tracks - essential for editing and
modifying data as well as simple playback.

ESEQ is a Yamaha proprietary format for Disklaviers. All the files on
genuine Yamaha PianoSoft disks are their proprietary E-SEQ format and
usually have the extension .fil This is the ONLY file format that can be
played on the MX100A/B, DGP and MX80 Disklaviers.

RE: [disklavier] Read the disklavier disk in computer

2002-01-10 by vincentdeleur

By playing a Midi 1 format disk it is possible to hear all channels by
editing the control unit, pianopart should be set on prg. I think this can
work.
In a sequence programm MIDI 1 format shows all channels seperate, it is
easier to work with.
