Using a laptop with Disklavier

Using a laptop with Disklavier

2002-10-02 by Robert Welcyng

Great idea! You need to buy an external MIDI interface such as a
Midiman Portman External Parallel MIDI Interface for the PC, a MIDI
cable, and a sequencer such as PG Music's Power Tracks.

With Power Tracks, you will be able to reassign the channels and modify
the velocities of files you have downloaded. You will be able to play
Type 1 MIDI files.

Your setup also offers the potential of keeping your PianoSoft
collection in MIDI format and storing them on HD, CD-ROM (if you have a
drive), or ZIP disk.

If your Disklavier is a MarkIIXG or newer, it has a To Host port on the back
of the control box, and you would not need a MIDI interface. I have
connected a Mac laptop with a $3 serial cable. To use a PC, you need the
$10 CBX cable and the free driver from the Yamaha web site.

Thanks again Carol,, I have a Toshiba 486 Laptop sitting idle which I
thought putting it in to good use by connecting it using Cakewalk. I
will be getting a Mark II (non XG) model. Any idea how to get that
connected to the laptop using either Serial or Parallel cables? Would I
need a Midi Interface too?

RE: [disklavier] Using a laptop with Disklavier

2002-10-04 by Carol Beigel

For a Mark II, you definitely need a MIDI interface. You choose an
interface for the port you want to use on the computer, i.e. do you want to
use a parallel port, a serial port, a USB port, etc. Midiman makes good
interfaces, and buy two MIDI cables - one for MIDI In and one for MIDI out.
Then you can record as well as playback directly from the computer running
Cakewalk.

RE: [disklavier] Using a laptop with Disklavier

2002-10-04 by Carol Beigel

I only see two benefits. One of them is to use Home Concert - a program
that provides accompaniment for your own piano playing. The other benefit
is to be able to use the Disklavier in the event your floppy disk drive
fails. Using a computer, with appropriate software, allows you to organize
your song library and create playlists. If you were having a party, you
wouldn't have to bother with changing a floppy disk every half hour or so.

Thanks Carol for the benefits. I have an old 486Laptop computer and a wagon
grand disklavier and will try to connect both. By the way, how will you
program the computer to play disklavier files continuosly from 1 file to
another? And where can I get the Home Concert Program? Thanks again.

That is assuming you have converted ALL of your disks to midi.
Does anybody know of an ESEQ player.

Sorry Carol I didn't see the Laptop bit.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
