temporary reply to pianosmart questions

2003-09-11 by Carol Beigel

For some reason, I am not receiving the posts from this group. I just now got the idea to check the group's website and found them. Sorry for the repeat posts. Hopefully, by day's end I will be getting them.

A generic response to MarkIIXG owners, is that unless you paid for something special like the EMK1 upgrade, or you can use Smart Key (the key winks and waits for you to play it) you do not have the 8 MB memory needed and need to get the new board for your control unit. I have an MX100IIXG, DKC500RXG control unit, and would need the new board.

For the MarkII owners who already have the CD player, you are going to need the DSR1 control unit.

Try to wade through the details carefully. It took me several tries! All of the parts necessary are available through your local Yamaha dealer.

It is a standing joke among office folks that piano technicians are dead in the water in an office environment - using a telephone with more than one line, a copy or fax machine, etc. I was pushing buttons the other day, and Heaven only knows what I did. I'll check back later when I get back from work.

Hi Carol,

I am still a bit confused. I did spend time on Yamaha's website, looked thru the
DCD1 PDF brochure, the specifications page, acessories, etc. I was not able to
find where Yamaha had placed the information that a Disklavier MarkIIXG would
require for example a EMK1 upgrade (the additional memory requirement you
mentioned) before being able to install a DCD1 unit. Can you point me as to
where to find this info, or have I misunderstood? My local dealer said that he
was not aware of the details...

Also, in the PDF brochure it shows that a MIDI connection is required between
the control unit and the CD Player. Does this mean that by installing the DCD1,
you 'give up' your external MIDI interface for usage with PC-based MIDI
sequencers <or> is there a 'secondary' MIDI interface on the DCD1 for external
usage?

Thanks for your input!

I have not seen this info on the Yamaha website, either. However, I have seen the information that was sent to dealers. If your dealer does not have the information or does not understand it, you can find information for contacting Yamaha Corp. of America directly by phone or email at this web address:

http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/Text_WithCatMenu_SC/0,6381,CTID%253D410015%2526CNTYP%253D%2526VNM%253DLIVE%2526AFLG%253DY,00.html

This is an excellent question. You are correct that when you use a DCD1 with a compatible Disklavier control unit that both MIDI ports on the Disklavier control unit are used to connect with both MIDI ports on the DCD1. (Out connects to In and In connects to Out.) Fortunately, these control units also have a To Host serial port and a switch for switching between To Host communications and MIDI port communications.

So, I you intend to use your Disklavier with a computer or other MIDI device as well as with a DCD1 AND you wish to avoid plugging and unplugging your MIDI cables, you may wish to use the serial connection for your computer or external MIDI device.

If you have a computer that lacks a serial port, you might want to consider purchasing the Yamaha UX96 MIDI interface. This interface connects to the computer via USB. It has two sets of communication ports: a single serial connector and a pair of MIDI ports (In and Out). USB drivers are available for Windows 98-XP and Mac OS 9 and OS X.

The other choice is a bit more complicated: use a MIDI splitter for MIDI Out on the Disklavier and a MIDI merger for MIDI In on the Disklavier. MIDI Solutions (www.midisolutions.com) is a company that makes convenient, small, self-powered devices for these purposes.

Good morning, again.

I would like to clarify the fact that my earlier message this morning regarding the MIDI cabling issues with the DCD1 referred ONLY to the situation in which you are connecting an updated DCD1 to your piano for use with Smart PianoSoft disks (i.e. floppy disks that play synchronously with a companion audio CD).

When you connect a DCD1 to a Disklavier for the sole purpose of playing traditional PianoSoft Plus Audio CDs, there is no need to use both MIDI ports. In this case, you simply connect MIDI Out on the DCD1 to MIDI In on the Disklavier. This leaves the MIDI Out port on the Disklavier available for use with an external device or computer. Also, this leaves MIDI In on the DCD1 available for use with an external device or computer.

The "Yamaha CD Player DCD1+PS Operation Manual" (which comes with the update disks for updating the features of a DCD1) contains numerous diagrams for connecting the DCD1 to various Disklavier control units as well as external speakers. I believe that new DCD1s that ship with the new features already installed will come with a new manual that has these same diagrams.

PianoBench

D: Thanks very much for the information. My laptop does have the Yamaha 'MIDI'

very often MIDI note or control info gets 'lost' and worse, MIDI notes become
hung, i.e., occasionally I get a MIDI 'on' but never get a MIDI 'off' for random

worked great with my Disklavier.

I am glad that you have a working solution. However, I have used Disklavier serial connections quite extensively over the years and never, ever had a problem except when I had a bad cable. Admittedly, most of my use was with a Mac, but I also used the serial connection with PCs occasionally. I should also mention that the Disklavier Pro 2000's built-in Windows computer communicated with the control unit via the serial port. So, I don't think that your experience with the serial port is normal.

I wonder whether you had a bad serial cable, out of date serial driver, or whether something else was messing with serial I/O on your computer.

Regarding the use of a MIDI splitter and merger:

Now that is something that may work. Just got to be careful not to run the PC

This is certainly true! However, some people might find such a sonic collage to be quite interesting.

Thanks so much for your input. By the way, what ever happened to 'In
Concert'?

Lest I put myself in the position of spamming the list regarding a product of my own, I'll answer you briefly and recommend that you contact me further via personal email if you would like.

Cakewalk, the publisher of In Concert, elected not to continue as its publisher (and similarly dumped some of its other products). My partner and I further developed our program and added music notation display. We publish it as Home Concert 2000 under our own company name, TimeWarp Tecnologies.

General info, downloadable demo, and sales information can be found at www.timewarptech.com.

You only need the EMK1 upgrade to use PianoSmart technology with the DCD1.
Otherwise the DCD1 works fine with all PianoSoft Plus Audio CDs. You can
also play QRS CDs and I think the PianoDisc CDs as well. PianoSmart also
requires using both MIDI ports on the DCD1. To use the other external MIDI
functions you may have to disconnect the MIDI cables from the CD player.
All of the various wiring scenarios are illustrated in the official Yamaha
publications. You can order your free copy of the manual from Yamaha as it
is not on their website.

QRS Pianomation and PianoDisc are the two American companies that compete
with theYamaha Disklavier - sort of! Both of these companies sell a player
system that can be installed after market, and both of them provide analog
midi CDs that would play on your Disklavier. However, neither of these
companies produces a "record" capability that even comes close to the DKV or
have a decent pedal mechanism. The literature on the DCD1 claims that it
will play other manufacturers products.

You can find a list of QRS products at: www.qrsmusic.com

Otherwise the DCD1 works fine with all PianoSoft Plus Audio CDs. You can
also play QRS CDs and I think the PianoDisc CDs as well. PianoSmart also
requires using both MIDI ports on the DCD1. To use the other external
MIDI
functions you may have to disconnect the MIDI cables from the CD player.
All of the various wiring scenarios are illustrated in the official Yamaha
publications. You can order your free copy of the manual from Yamaha as
it
  is not on their website.

Fraser,

I recall seeing one of those "forever" notes in a file you sent me.
Because it shows up in the file, the problem is in the record function
of your DKV (not in the reproduction function). As I once mentioned,
generally record misbehavior "goes away" from my DKV when I cycle the
power off and on again. Given the frequency and consistency of your
problem however, I recommend you call a qualified Yamaha DKV tech to
correct it.

Using the built-in test and maintainance modes, your tech should be able
to put her finger on the problem. Your DKV is quite new, as I
recall--Yamaha should cover that work under warranty.
