P-e-C zip files

P-e-C zip files

2004-02-09 by PianoBench@aol.com

Good afternoon, everyone.

A few people reported having trouble unzipping the .zip archives from the Piano-e-Competition website over the weekend. I know that problems were mentioned with the E-SEQ archives, I am not sure whether there were problems with the XP or Enhanced archives.

A few people responded to say that they had no trouble using various unzipping utilities under other Windows operating systems.

Although I normally use a Macintosh, I booted my Windows system today using Windows XP professional. I successfully downloaded one example of each .zip type. Each time I ended up with a folder on my desktop that had a zipper in the middle of its icon. In all three cases I could open this folder by clicking on it. Inside was another folder and inside that folder were the song files and directory file(s).

I don't know why anyone has had trouble using Windows XP. However, a Windows guru friend has suggested to me that perhaps some people have an antivirus setting on their computer that does not recognized the file types contained in these archives. If so, perhaps that is the reason why they appear to be empty.

Since I am not a Windows person, I regret that I cannot give a definitive explanation for this problem, but I don't think that the problem is with the archives. Of course, I am prepared to be corrected on this point.

PianoBench

The incompatibility (only happens when using Windows XP's native compressed
folder feature) is with the directory name inside the piano-e-competition
zip files. The comma is the culprit. I was able to reproduce the problem
with completely different files under a directory name that includes a
comma (and problem vanished once re-zipped using a directory name without
comma).

Now, for end users the problem is easy to deal with - just install any of a
number of free utilities (such as WinZip) and the downloaded PeC files can
be extracted. Let's remember that prior to Windows XP, users had to do
that in order to unzip ANY zipped file anyway. But if Yamaha wants to
maximize the distribution and usage of these files, it would be nice to
have them re-zipped for download (with either comma-free directory names,
or simply without the extra directory level).

Good afternoon, everyone.

I appreciate your comments, CCW, but I don't understand the problem. As I indicated in my recent post, I had no trouble unzipping these files using Windows XP Professional without resorting to any other utilities.

Hi All

I can confirm that the commas are the problem. Having just been all
the way through one of the zip files using HexWorkshop I removed all
of the commas and it unzipped fine using XP Home.

Pianobench,

You can unzip these files in Windows XP Professional, but only by
certain methods as described in my previous post. If you double click
on the files and invoke the Windows XP Professional unzip wizard, they
will not decompress. I have not verified whether the problem is with a
comma in the file names, but that could be the problem. If you have
Windows XP and have installed WinZip or a similar utility , then you
will have no problems unzipping the files, but if you are using Windows
XP Professional native unzipping feature, there is very much a problem.
I have experienced the problem and so have several others.

Good afternoon, again.

Tom (and everyone else having trouble unzipping with Windows XP), I have no
doubt that the trouble that you have reported is a problem that you are
experiencing. However, I cannot reproduce the problem.

When I download these .zip files using Windows XP Professional, I get a .zip
archive on my Desktop. If I double-click the archive or right-click and choose
Open, I can open the archive and get access to everything inside.

If I right-click and select Open with... and choose "Compressed (zipped)
folders," I get the same good results.

If I right-click and select Extract All, I get the Extraction Wizard. This
wizard works fine for me.

PianoBench

If your Windows XP hasn't been patched for quite some time, it is possible
that its "compressed folders" feature still works with folder names
containing commas. The problem apparently came out along with Hotfix
329048 (you can verify if you have it by going to Control Panel ->
Add/Remove Programs, but don't ask me what it was supposed to fix), which
was a critical update and Windows XP by default would have downloaded it
automatically then prompted the user to install it.

Here is the documentation but apparently MS hasn't come out with a fix (or
shall I say un-fix) stable enough for public
release: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];813942

Re: [disklavier] P-e-C zip files

2004-02-09 by Tom Wheeler

It is interesting that some of us are not able to use the XP native
unzip feature to open the e-Competition files and others (Pianobench)
are able to do so. I checked and I have never installed the Hotfix
329048 and I still am not able to decompress the files by double
clicking on them (which enables the Windows XP decompression wizard)
although I have decompressed them by selecting the zipped file and then
selecting "Extract Files" from the resulting drop-down menu. I suspect
that buried somewhere within the inner mysteries of the Windows XP
operating system or the software configuation of our respective machines
is the answer, but at this point it hardly seems worth while to pursue
it further.

I did find the YamPlayer program contributed by MidiMagic to be an
excellent way to build a Play List of the e-Competition files with the
downloaded ESEQ files which displayed the song title as well as the
performing artist. These could have been incorporated into the enhanced
midi files but were not.

These files present some terrific material for the disklavier and I
thank Pianobench, John Walker and others who had a hand in preparing
them for their hard work.

Re: P-e-C zip files Microsoft Flaw

2004-02-09 by Jorge Fernandez

I followed the link, read it in Spanish (my natural tongue) it is
clear that the flaw is in MS WIN XP and only in some installations.

Thanks to Chin-Chine for finding the real cause.
If the files are not modified then you need an extra unzip program.
(some already mentioned) here.

Re: [disklavier] P-e-C zip files

2004-02-09 by PianoBench@aol.com

Good afternoon, everyone.

In a message dated 2/9/04 4:30:20 PM, Tom writes:

I did find the YamPlayer program contributed by MidiMagic to be an excellent way to build a Play List of the e-Competition files with the downloaded ESEQ files which displayed the song title as well as the performing artist. These could have been incorporated into the enhanced midi files but were not.

Actually, all three file types--XP, Enhanced, and E-SEQ--have an embedded "sequencer-specific meta event" that the Disklavier uses to display the song titles. Since the Disklaver displays 2 lines of 16 characters each, I put the song title (as best I could) in the first 16 characters and the artist's name in the second 16 characters.

In addition, I used a Yamaha in-house program to create directory files for each collection of file types. One of those directory files contains (redundantly) the same song title information.

I have not used YamPlayer, so I don't know how it determines the titles that it displays. But, I can confidently say that the same information is present in every song file. The song titles will show up on the Disklavier regardless as to whether the directory files are present.

I think the diference is when you use a media player in windows like
Microsoft's or winamp.

Has any one the link to the eseq player?
I couln't find it in the utilities file section of this group
It should be in MidiMagic 's web page.

Pianobench,

Thanks for clarifying the situation on the song titles. Since I did not
place the files on floppy disks in order to play them in my disklavier,
but rather used YamPlayer to create a Play List and play them directly
from a lap top connected to my DC3A, I was not aware that the midi files
contained the song titles as a sequencer specific midi event. I did
pull a few of the midi files into Cakewalk's Sonar 3 sequencer and I
noted when I selected File>Get Info within this sequencer that it had no
information regarding the song title or the performer and therefore I
assumed (obviously incorrectly) that this information was not in the
file. YamPlayer is able to show the song titles when presented with the
ESEQ files, but not with the Enhanced Midi Files.

Incidentally I found that the ZHOU03.fil will not play back correctly.
This ESEQ files shows a time of over 1 hr 24 min and is silent on
playback. The music may well be there somewhere but I did not wait for
more than 3 minutes before stopping playback. The midi file
(ZHOU003.mid) plays back fine so the problem appears to be only with the
ESEQ version of this particular file.

Re: [disklavier] P-e-C zip files

Good afternoon, again.

In a message dated 2/9/04 5:42:41 PM, Tom writes:

YamPlayer is able to show the song titles when presented with the ESEQ files, but not with the Enhanced Midi Files.

There are several possible places from which the Disklavier (or other MIDI device) might select text to display as a song title. Below is information that I have previously shared on this subject.

For reasons that I don't understand, Cakewalk and other sequencers typically ignore sequencer-specific meta events. Of course, the nature of such events and how to interpret them is another issue if the company that creates them does not document how they work.

Cakewalk does display a place to enter a "sequence name." We did not create sequence names for these P-e-C files.

Incidentally I found that the ZHOU03.fil will not play back correctly....

I'll check on this and report back. Thanks for the info.

PianoBench
***********
As best I can determine, the Disklavier display can get the file name for a
SMF song from any of these four places:

(1) a name stored in a directory that the Disklavier creates on the disk when
you make a recording to the disk,

(2) a Yamaha proprietary meta event added to the SMF by the Disklavier,

(3) the so-called "sequence" name which is imbedded in the MIDI file--usually
by a sequencing program,

and

(4) the DOS file name.

Which name does the Disklavier use for display?

Well, it seems as though the Disklavier defaults to reading the name in the
directory file if one is present.

The display name registered in the directory file is put there when the
directory file is initially created. This directory file is created when a
recording is made. Subsequently, whenever a new piece is recorded or an old
one rerecorded, the directory file is updated with respect to the file being
recorded or otherwise altered.

If a directory file is not present, the Disklavier reads the name embedded in
the Yamaha meta event. This meta event is created by the Disklavier and is
embedded in the file when you use the front panel of the Disklavier to add a
title to a SMF. Adding a title is, technically, a recording procedure which
also updates the directory on the disk or creates a new one if one is not
present.

Keep in mind that a proprietary meta event will normally not be read by
another other piece of hardware or software except one that is made by the
manufacturer which is identified as the creator of the meta event. Therefore,
Yamaha title meta events may be read by the Clavinova CVP, but will not be
read by another manufacturer's keyboard or by your sequencer.

If a Yamaha meta event title is not embedded in the file and a directory file
is not present which contains info about the file in question, the Disklavier
displays the sequence name. This name is added in a sequencer, such as
Cakewalk, Vision, Performer, Metro, etc. For example, with Cakewalk Pro Audio
7, you can go to the File menu and select Info.... This brings up a dialog
which lets you add a title. With Performer, you open the Chunks window and
create the sequence name there.

When you resave the SMF from a sequencer, the Yamaha meta event--if any--is
usually lost. The sequencer adds the "public" meta event for the sequence
title. If you do not specify a title in your sequencer, your sequencer may
automatically add the public meta event for the sequence title. This default
title usually shows up on the Disklavier display with the name "Untitled."

Although this sequence name is actually a "public" meta event--for lack of a
better word--, it is one which is universally recognized.

Finally, if a directory file is not present, a Yamaha title meta event is not
present, and a SMF sequence title meta event is not present, the Disklavier
will use the DOS file name for display. You can create this last situation by
taking a SMF, opening it in a sequencer like Cakewalk, setting the sequence
name to
nothing, and resaving the SMF file to a disk which has no directory already on
it.

How should you add your titles? If you work with a sequencer a lot, your best
bet is to add the sequence title when you have the SMF open for editing.
Otherwise, adding titles using the Disklavier's front panel is fine. The
advantage to adding titles with your sequencer is that the title stays
"glued" to
the file, regardless of whether the file is opened in a sequencer by someone
else or put on a disk to which the Disklavier later adds a directory file.

Keep in mind that the display name can be up to 32 characters long as far as
the Disklavier's display is concerned. The first 16 characters (including
spaces) go on the top line, the rest on the bottom line.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
