Just wondering if there's going to be another update, and if so, what are they going to update. More hi- hat stuff would be nice :)

I dont know if Elektron plans on ever updating the Sid's OS again, but it sure would be nice. There has to be some more features they can cram in there... It seems like ever since the Machinedrum came out Elektron could care
less about the Sidstation.

Totally agree!
Technically, adding the feature for playing the three oscillatorsin
the SID-chip independently via midi shouldn't be that hard. User
interface is totally another thing. How should users interact with the
new functionality?
How is that functionality to be added into the existing OS? Is there
enough free memory to fit in everything? Should there be another
totally different set if patches for the tripple midi control mode?
Editing those patches? Do we have to remove 50 of the existing patches
to make room for the new patches?
So, please, give some thought to the amount of work that it takes to
develop some new functionality for something that already exists, then
think some more on how much work it is to come up with a new
product...

P.S. I've been sequencing the SID from the MD and it is really fun! D.S.

Word! Intant stomp-a-thon! Especially when using the hold
parameter. The distortion though sounds a bit too "digital" for my
ears. I think I need to use LFOs to affect some parameters to make it
sound not as static.
Right now I am mostly making weird electronic percussion sounds with
the MD. Add some compression (I really like the built in compressor)
and it kicks like a mule!

They just released a new bank of patches for the Sid. And even if I were claiming they'd dropped support, I wouldn't blame the MD for it. I bought my sidstation over 1 year before the MD was released, and they haven't released an OS update for it yet. They worked out all the bugs, which is all I can ask for. Adding extra features isn't really a requirement for me, since I bought it with the feature set it has. Not to mention the MD is a more versatile piece, and most likely appeals to a wider market. It makes sense for them to concentrate on that for now, and deal with the niche market the sidstation aims for later. The MD has the potential to be huge (especially for a company as small as elektron.) I'd like to see Elektron come out with a stripped down version of the MD at a cheaper price (maybe fewer effects, less knobs, only 2 outs, 1 in, and maybe fewer tracks) to get people introduced to their gear. Imagine if in 2 years we'll all be listening to Kid SPS-1's latest album :) Now having said that, I would like to see midi triggering of the individual oscillators added. I have no idea if that's feasible tho. c.

I have a newer version of the os than what is on the site. I wonder if they do have a newer version, just havn't updated the site with it. As for the stripped down version of the md... I don't think I would like that. I'm sure they would sell more, but I'm always for quality, not quantity. The machinedrum is what it is because Elektron is a good company. If they were to strip it down to sell more, they would be like microsoft... trying to get everyone to buy a stripped down version of something so they could profit from it. I would much rather see them work on a keyboard, or on a sequencing groove box :) -jared

Elektron haven't dropped support for the Sidstation. They are still
selling it. They have 314 sid chips in stock. What do you consider
support? Regular OS updates? That is one thing you haven't got because
they have been busy. What else?
As far as I know Elektron have been extremely pressed getting the
Machinedrum out, no time for anything else. The word "vacation"
haven't existed in their vocabulary for two years...

Not a chance! :)
Now that I've got a midi-sequncer that I like (Machinedrum actually)
I've started using the SID lots more! I just don't want to sit in
front of a computer when making music.
The sound of the SID is to me very much trance, and electropop. Not
being that much into trance, the electropop part is what I love from
it! That chip is so evil when it comes to the strange and distorted
frequencis that creeps out of it! If you still think it is too soft,
add distortion. It roars.

elektron is kind of like the SID chip... capable of really cool stuff,
but definitely with some drawbacks. people identify closely with both
so of course when one is criticized, it can be taken personally.

This is an interesting thread to me, because I'm thinking about putting together a live act, more towards industrial / experimental, but what is your opinion with this? Where can a group draw the line between prefab and live and still be okay? Does it depend on the kind of music? I'm not even sure where I stand. I saw Juno Reactor, with a lot of prerecorded material, but then there was the whole tribal core pounding out the beats on drum kits and African percussion. It made for a good live set, even if much of the music came from disc. On the other side, I saw Nitzer Ebb once do a horrible set, with just three guys standing around doing as little as possible, occasionally pushing "the big red button" to start the next song. But what can you do? If you tried to play everything live, some of the music just wouldn't come out right. Trying to recreate a sequence that's a repetition of sixteenth notes quantized exactly to the beat might be difficult. Sometimes you need that machinelike quality only a sequencer can give. Same with drum machines. Live drummers kick ass, but it's a totally different feel. I guess personally I like that hybridization of man and machine, that balance between preset and improv that makes music come alive. But then again it comes down to the kind of music involved...

Hey Rob, I didn't know you switched to Ableton Live! Recently I heard the 'Acid Junkies' are testing a similar approach to take on stage. And personally, I am very interested in giving it a go. Is the transition from an MPC2000XL easy.. or is it pretty much a 'Start form scratch' thing. Interface, a Dutch electronic audio/music magazine (www.interface.nl),
reviewed Live last month. The review was done by Stefan Robbers,
coincidently one of the Acid Junkies :)

Try the demo, it gives you a good idea of the program. Once I played with
the demo a bit, I couldn't wait to order it (online, direct from Ableton's
website, arrived within a week).
I run it on OSX, on which Live tends to be very stable, albeit somewhat
buggy at times (I've had it crash on certain .WAV files for no apparent
reason).

I'm not an MPC2000 man myself, but using Live is eerily easy to learn :)

Rob, congrations on really nice music and a really nice sound. And thanks for the awsome site. I've been listening to Speedy J, Pacou, Adam Beyer and you all day. All my co-workers are pissed. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo! Mail - the world's greatest free email! http://mail.yahoo.com/
