Has anyone had any luck of getting a reverse cymbal sound out of the MD? I have tried using GND noise with a LFOs set to HOLD and the inverted exponential Shape2, but to no avail. any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. David

I've got a couple in some of my kits from late last year. I'll try to get them loaded onto the machinedrum sometime in the next day or three and put the settings up here in ASCII-Lingo.

yeah... I'm trying to remember how I pulled it off, it was a trick... I'm almost positive it was actually two cymbals, layered carefully with the right kind of LFO trickery. I'm almost positive you need to layer two sounds to get it going. Regardless, I'll get my MD sorted with some older content and get it up. -- Damon

Well, you have to understand - I have no hardware skills at all, but I am still somewhat impressed at my incompetence... I glanced over at my Machinedrum, and I noticed that one of the knobs had somehow broken clean off. I have no idea how it happened, and though I could venture a guess, that's not so important at this point. So, I figured that it should be easy to fix - you shouldn't have to send back a synth for repair for something so trivial. So, I took some super glue and tried to glue it back. LOL - now I've totally ruined it - the underlying mechanism is totally stuck now - must have gotten too much glue on it or something. There must be an easy way to fix this - maybe remove the top and replace the whole knob...anyone know about this kind of thing? Embarassed...

Ouch! The easiest (and safest) fix is probably to put it in a box and ship it to a service center. That is an unfortunate situation, man... I wouldn't risk doing anymore damage. Get it well soon :) The powers of superglue are still largely undiscovered, and not all for the light side of the force. chrism

I don't see how you can do the latter without realizing it (and the former is kind of difficult in the first place). I wouldn't try messing with it too much, you could screw it up worse trying to remove the glue. Elektron has these encoders custom made and to my knowledge there are no others like them. so I doubt you'll find new ones unless you go through them. so there's two options: 1) contact Elektron and see if they'll okay you to repair your machine (if it's still under warranty) and send you the part, though I wouldn't count on this happening 2) send it in for repair (there's a facility in LA now; and I think you're in the states, right?) good luck! If it was the former, it should have fit back on pretty easily, I thought, and it didn't seem to. All I know is that the knob was laying next to the hole on the machine, so I can't say for sure what happened - the only thing I can think of was that when somehow some cables pushed against it while I was doing something else, but I really don't know. > I wouldn't try messing with it too much, you could screw it up worse > trying to > remove the glue. So the best and easy way is to trig an external sample by midi ! Damon Menne a écrit: >yeah... > >I'm trying to remember how I pulled it off, it was a trick... That's pretty generalized. I don't think that's the best way at all. Yes, it's a method, but it isn't in the machinedrum... and if it's for live performance, that's a whole new piece of gear to haul around. Also, you can't mess with samples the way you can mess with machine generated sounds in the MD (of course, the opposite is true too, but since ofthicktum asked machinedrum, I'm assuming he'd prefer to have it there. Anyway, if I ran off to a sampler every time I wanted a weird percussion sound out of the machinedrum, I'd know it about 1/10th as well as I know it now.

right on, Damon. I totally agree with you; I've gotten a ton of sounds from the MD that might have been easier with a sampler and a sample library, but I couldn't warp and twist them nearly as much if I had gone that route. and usually the warping and twisting leads to something even more interesting! I look forward to hearing how this can be done. it's one of the few sounds I never figured out how to do (it was asked in here quite some time ago, actually). another one is how to get the MD to say "Elektron" (I've heard that it has been done). :-) BTW, I plan on adding a "tips and tricks" section to the files section of the group's website. hopefully people can fill it with some interesting tips/tricks for the Elektron machines. this reverse cymbal thing is along the lines of what I'm thinking of. HAHAHHAHA "Elektron" Man, that'd be some effort. I'd guess 300bpm 32nd step patterns per letter or something, lots of careful shaping mer syllabic moment. I don't have the patience for that kind of high-quality parlor trickery, but I'd love to see it around. ;-]

I wonder if you could not activate retrigger and warp start position from ma to zero... have not the MD here but maybe worth a try. Joseph Melnyk <jmelnyk@...> wrote .. > right on, Damon. Not quite revers symbol, but siumulates the sweeping sound.

I remember getting a kind of reversed sound from the efm bass drum. Maybe you should try using that ramp envelope. I know adsr envelope has been mentioned. Have to check the efm HH. Speaking of cymbols, I made a kit with just the efm cymbol. I have to go back to see what I got. The P-I CC has some interesting controls too. I just tried now and I got something with lfo triggered filter along with grab at 50%. But I'm not sure it's the sound you're after. It does sound like it's missing something. Probably that two cymbol idea earlier. I'm really liking this PI CC. Sampling would be easier. --- In elektron-users@yahoogroups.com, "M-.-n" <nostromo@a...> wrote: > > I wonder if you could not activate retrigger and warp start position from ma to zero... have not the MD here but maybe worth a try. > > Joseph Melnyk <jmelnyk@c...> wrote .. > > right on, Damon. I am an electrical engineer so I knew this was a case of soldering 4 new pots with complete shafts to the main board :( emailed elektron support and the guy there was extreamly helpful and sent me 4 new pots which I have since replaced and all is working well again. Do not atempt to do this if your no good with a pro soldering iron and a solder pump, otherwise you'll be very upset (not an easy task) email "DE" at support he is one helpful guy Jez p.s. this is the only complaint I have for the MD the knobs a fooking awful, to tight to the shafts and cheap looking. how about some nice pro knobs :)

Using a screw driver seems to be a bad idea. Using careful even force with your finger tips seems to me to be the best way. I have to keep this all in mind when I decide to replace my lcd cover (cracked). I think there are about 8 tight solders on the potentometers. I would never think about soldering it myself, unless it's my Fatman. --- In elektron-users@yahoogroups.com, "his_nibbs99" <jezjackson@b...> wrote:

Actually I would also like to try this reverse cymbal thing, but my Md is on it's way to service (I broke my 'scale setup' button). Reverse cymbal thing reminded me of the vinyl stop sound which I was trying to create some time ago. I got it pretty good with PI-hihat machine! I was warned that they might crack by the Elektron tech. but I avoided screwdrivers and instead went for even pressure using just my fingers. the knobs are on there *very* tight, but you can definitely get them off with your fingers. I sort of gripped real tight and then wedged my thumb and forefinger against the knob (on opposite sides) and faceplate at the same time and let that be my leverage (without exerting sideways pressure). luckily, it went off without a hitch.... besides, a screwdriver near the faceplates of these machines just seemed like a scratched synth waiting to happen! Hi everybody I haven't been active on this list for a while, so here comes a late suggestion to achieving a reverse cymbal: My usual "trick" to make sounds fade in slowly is to assign the LFO to volume (invert single-cycle ramp, trig position) and then adjust the depth and speed settings. If you want the sound to be chopped off, just enter a new event with volume lock programmed to 0. Nice way of exploiting the fact that each machine is monophonic. I think this will work quite well with a reversed cymbal sound. Just use the E12 crash cymbal set to max level. Btw, I once made a kit consisting only E12 ride cymbals, tweaked to the unrecognisable. :) The downside of this way of programming is that you might get a click when the MD triggers the sound.
