Emax HD SCSI Zip Question

Emax HD SCSI Zip Question

2003-10-20 by roscoe_sheridan

I have an Emax HD (non-SE) with the external scsi upgrade. This
requires my SCSI ID to be at 0 to recognize a drive as many of you
may already know. I purchased a zip drive that will allow me to use
the SCSI ID 0 and it will Scan disk for Errors just fine, but when I
try to Format a disk, it just says "Loading Software". The light
comes on the Zip drive I hear some noise and the whole thing is over
in about 8 seconds. After this happens I try to boot from SCSI and
its a no go. I am under the impression that formatting should take a
few minutes not a few seconds, so I assume my zips havent been
formatted. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have experimented with different termination settings. I havc
experimented with different scsi ID's, although becomes painfully
obvious that nothing will happen unless at ID 0. The internal hard
drive is obviously disconnected for the zip to work. I have checked
cables and done everything that I can think of. Will the non SE Emax
HD just not work with a zip drive? Am I missing something? I can
format with the same zip drive and save files fine with my MPC 60. No
go with the Emax. Tell what im missing here.

Thanx in advance.....

Re: Emax HD SCSI Zip Question

No I am not... I was under the impression that I could not use
it...unless my Emax was had the SE upgrade. I am HD version 1.1
software...which doesnt have the selectable SCSI ID feature. My zip
is set to SCSI ID 0 like the internal HD was.

More testing done today. I got it to format and save and load
banks...to/from the zip. I cannot get the Emax to boot from the zip.
Anyone got any ideas on this? As before stated, I have tried
different termination, and the SCSI ID is at 0. With just no floppy
in the drive...the screen reads "please insert disk". When I unhook
the floppy... the system just hangs. Any help in this matter would be
appreciated.

BTW: The Emax formats zips super fast. I thought it wasnt formatting
at all....but wow. I also tried the Plus OS and I got a "Wrong
Software" message so... it seems my earlier assumptions about needing
the SE software to use it was correct.

Hi,
Nice to see an Emax non-SE working with a ZIP100.
It may be having problems booting from a disk that has not spun up and is
ready in time. The Emax II cycles round the SCSI ids looking for a drive to
be ready but the Emax HD OS probably expects the drive to be ready faster
than a ZIP can spin up.

Just one question. Did you use the copy software option and copy the OS to the Zip? If not you might try that. The OS must be on the boot disk and you'll have to copy it from a floppy. After you copy software see if it will boot. Also the Zip drive formats completely in seconds from my experience. Hope this helps.

Re: Emax HD SCSI Zip Question

2003-10-22 by roscoe_sheridan

Yes I copied the OS to the Zip. I did figure out that it formats
quite fast....earlier today. Also.. it doesnt matter what length of
time the zip is powered up before I turn on the Emax, so I doubt it
is a question of the zip spinning up too slowly. I have tested it
with the zip powered up...from 0 to 5 mins before the Emax is turned
on. Any other ideas on why I cant boot from Zip?

Thanks for the ideas so far.

Could it be the access time? The Zip has like a 28 ms access time since it's a modified
tape drive, not a modified hard drive like the Syquest drives were.

Re: Emax HD SCSI Zip Question

2003-10-23 by roscoe_sheridan

That very well could have something to do with it. My logic says that
if it can boot from zip on the SE you should be able to on the HD as
well. I would think booting would be more a hardware than a software
issue. At any rate.. im in the process of replacing my internal hard
drive. Im thinking I can boot from there... then use the zip for its
load and save capabilities. It will take a mod and be a slight
inconvienence but...it will work for now until I get this issue
worked out. Thanks for all the help so far. Any more ideas on why it
wont boot from zip are quite welcome.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
