2005-04-08 by fred

hello i was wondering if someone could help me with this.
i have an emax2 i recently bought an external iomega zip 100 which i
hooked up to the scsi port on the back of the emax, powered up the
drive and then turned on the emax. when the zip drive is hooked up my
emax cannot find it or my internal hd which is scsi#1. floppy is
scsi#0 zip drive is not found at all. i'm sure i'm doing somthing

hello fred,
did you set the little "termination" switch in the
back of your scsi zip100 drive to the "on-1" setting?
this tells the emax2 that the zip100 drive is the last
drive in the scsi chain.
so, your emax2 can then "see" the drive on scsi 5 or
6(depending on your setting of the other little zip100
switch).
bakis.

The zip you have is not scsi if it doesn't have the ID or termination switches, you need a scsi one.

Re: connecting zip drive to emax 2

2005-04-08 by David Mattock

I agree it sounds like you don't have a scsi zip drive. Some of the
newer scsi zip drives don't work with the Emax 2 very well anyway so if
you start looking for a scsi zip drive make sure it is one of the older
original zip drives. The Syquest EZ135 or EZ230 removable cartridge
drives are faster and more reliable than the zip drives but are harder
to come by and disks are harder to find also.

About SCSI id's. The factory setting of an Emax 2 Hard Drive is SCSI
ID#1. The floppy drive is set to SCSI ID#0 (I'm not sure if it's
really a scsi drive but it certainly uses the scsi ID) You can easily
change the scsi id of the hard drive by changing the jumper settings on
the hard drive itself. You can usually find the jumper settings info
on the internet for the specific drive in your Emax 2.

thank you that is exactly the problem thank you. after looking at
the info that came with the drive i realize that i have the parallel
port model. i was however able to purchase another on ebay for $5.00
so i'll try again next week.
thanx to madtux as well.

Re: connecting zip drive to emax 2

2005-04-28 by i5c4r7

Hi, I have the same setup myself, except I have no internal HD. A few
things you can check:

-Is the termination switch on the zip drive turned on or off? If it
is the only external HD, it should be turned on.

-Does your internal HD have jumpers set to give it a SCSI ID? If not,
when the zip drive is hooked up, your EmaxII could be confused as to
which device should be taking SCSI device number 5 or 6 (depending on
what you have your drive set to).

-Are you positive it is a SCSI zip drive? Believe it or not, I have
heard stories about people who purchased second hand zip drives,
assuming that they are SCSI but, apparently they actually turned out
to be parallel zip drives. I'm not sure how true this is but, they
would both be 25db ports so, they would look very much alike.

good luck!

hello fred,

I'm not sure how true this is but, they
would both be 25db ports so, they would look very much alike.

good luck!

Hi

The difference between SCSI and Parallel is the communication interface. The Emax cannot use a parallel zip drive. Your computer can. The Emax can use the SCSI zip drive but you have to externalize the SCSI inside the Emax to take advantage of an external SCSI zip drive.

Hi

I thought we were talking about the Emax 1. The Emax II does have external SCSI via the DB-25 connector on the back.

Is it possible to boot from the Zip drive?

I installed an internal HD on my Emax II and they noise it makes is
pretty loud, So I want to remove it and just use a zip drive I have.

Does anyone in the group know of HD model that is quiet?

Re: connecting zip drive to emax 2

2005-05-31 by David Mattock

I have been selling HD's on ebay for the past 5 years. It is
becoming very difficult to find the used drives now so I don't sell
many anymore so I am happy to share what I know.

The Quantum Maverick 500mb is nice and quiet and so is the Quantum
Prodrive LPS 80-700mb. The conner drives that I tried were
horrible. They spun up quickly enough but I could hear them from the
other room.

One of my Emax II's at home in my studio has two Quantum Prodive LT
730mb drives in it. They format to about 690mb. But you can hear
them. I know people are generally looking for the quietest thing out
there but with the age of these older HD's you are never going to
find anything that is silent. I have always recorded my synth tracks
direct and when it's time to use a mic I just turn everything else
off. That or get a vocal booth that you can use. For live
performace who cares about a little HD noise if you can hear that
over the sound of the crowd then you didn't sell enough tickets.

Anyway I suggest looking for the Quantum Maverick 500 or the Quantum
Prodrive LPS 500 (540S) Put a jumper on A0 this will set the drive to
SCSI ID#1 and go for it.

Re: [emax] Re: connecting zip drive to emax 2

2005-06-01 by Alex Pereda

Thanks for the info.

I don't remember which drive I installed, but it's louder than my PC,
and my PC is loud, so imagine both of them going at the same time
it's annoying , to say the least.

I'm actually using my EMAX Se, (IKE edition), because it doesn't make
that much noise. My Emax II was a recent addition and I don't have
many sounds that I need from it, I was in the process of loading the
Emax Se sound to the Emax II, but ran into some disapointing results,
so I'm think of recording the samples in the computer and maybe
resample them into the Emaxx II.

I don't know if this is a good idea, I'm open to suggestions.

thanks

Re: [emax] Re: connecting zip drive to emax 2

the emax II can't replace the emax IMO, my Emax's internal HD is somewhat loud, but I have seen others that are very quiet. My Glyph and seagate externals however are noisy as hell, about as load as my computer. I use zip drives pretty much exclusively now, with the emax anything larger is a waste since it on;y saves 20MB's per zip, I was hoping it might recognize a flash card reader and I could use 20MB or 32 Mb cards to waste less space, but I always have zips around, so I don't care so much.

I don't know if this is a good idea, I'm open to suggestions.

  thanks

Do you think the emax sounds better than the Emax II?

I hear you about the external drives, I have my share of them, add
to that the Emax II's internal drive and its a symphony.. I use a
Powerbook when doing music now, so I turn my PC off and that helps,
but can't turn off the Ext. drives.

I'm interested in hearing your opinion on the sound difference
between the two samplers..

Re: [emax] Re: connecting zip drive to emax 2

2005-06-01 by elmacaco

They are different, I like 12 bit, so I like the emax, it;s character, the II has it's own character, more so than modern 16 bit samplers, but very different that the emax.

Better is subjective. I posted an explanation about why I like 12 bit so much when a guy took issue with 12 bit being better, I explained and he thanked me because no one had ever tried to tell him why they preferred it. it's probably like 3 months ago or so.

Do you think the emax sounds better than the Emax II?

I hear you about the external drives, I have my share of them, add
to that the Emax II's internal drive and its a symphony.. I use a
Powerbook when doing music now, so I turn my PC off and that helps,
but can't turn off the Ext. drives.

I'm interested in hearing your opinion on the sound difference
  between the two samplers..

  saludos

I found it:, for some reason it takes the headers from my posts out , so I filled it in with "then I replied".

I love happy endings ;)

Subject: [emax] Differences: Emax & Emax II

I was wondering what the major differences are
between the original
Emax and the Emax II, aside from the Emax II being
an upgraded
version
of the Emax. I ask because I already have an Emax
II keyboard, and
have the opportunity to purchase a rack mount
Emax,
and I'd like to
know if picking up the Emax is worth my while,
like
if it possesses
features the Emax II doesn't.

Then I said:

Yes, magic!!!!

That 12 bit beauty that adds great character to any
sound sampled, makes everything more musical, and
has
a great way of sitting in a mix while still sounding
big.

The rack is ideal, the best one to get is a SE HD
with
the corresponding panel graphics, then you can even
add external scsi and have a zip drive, but I don't
use too many of the SE features, so a regular emax
is
cool too if the price is right.

How does that "twelve bit beauty" add better
character
to the sound? I guess I'll call Warner Bros and
tell
them it's time to re-record the last two albums so
my
keys will "sit" in the mix.
I don't hear this magic difference that you do
between
Emax I and II...........I do hear a difference
between
Emax (I or II) and my EMU Ultras................The
Ultras can sound a bit cold..(on some samples).
Help me out understanding what the difference is.
If
your talking differences in filters or
what.?...........No offense........we all love
Emax.....but I've used both and like Emax
keyboards....period.
I'm a musician, not a techno detail guy, maybe I
just
don't get it.
Share the magic.............
Dave

---------------------------------
Then I replied:

---------------------------------
The filters, the A/D D/A converters, the way stuff
sounds when you put it in there, the way it breaks up
beautifully when you tune a 10KHz sample down
ridiculously, the VCA's, the sound so close to an
SP-1200 (great sound reputation, just ask the warner
brothers ;)

In short, magic. I was saying that the emax would be
a good addition to a emax II. They were engineered
very differently, and it is audible, and I'm sure they
would complement each other, especially if available
cheap. Are you saying an emax is not a good addition
to a setup with an emax II? Cuz that was the
question, do you have to be so condescending about a
different opinion?

I also said the way it sits in a mix, not that it sits
in a mix, anything can be made to sit or strapped
down, but the way the emax does it is very unique, the
contrast with acoustic and analog sounds is just
great, it's like Dr. Who magic.

The Emax II is far less interesting to me, but still
good, great digital filters, they sound very good, but
it is just not interesting enough for me, It delivers
different things than the emax, things that don't
interest me, but might interest you. I also have an
S6000 sampler, and it is far less interesting to me
compared to the emax, even with all the FX and filter
types available. I like my samplers to have
character, to give something more back than what I put
into it. I find 12 bit samplers do this more for my
tastes, then again, I am not trying to play it like a
piano, There are other things for that, like pianos ;)
but it depends what you're going for.

The Emax just does that for me, I am getting deeper
and deeper into what it can do, and I don't think
I'll run out soon. I embrace aliasing, and am not a
techno guy, but I try to hear music in what others may
not be able to, that's my thing, I love it in my music
and I love searching for it. With the emax, it is
easy to find and more rewarding than I expected. I am
a musician too, but I know my tools inside and out,
it helps me get more out of them.

Two WB albums? I'd love to hear them, I'm glad stuff
with old samplers is still being released!

AT LAST!!!!
A great answer to this question.
Sorry if I sounded condescending........I've heard I'm
hard to work with sometimes...........maybe it's true.
I'ld love to hear more passionate discussion from this
group and feel free to let me have it if I sound
condescending.........it's really directed at not
hearing the "why" that goes along with opinions that
are expressed. That's the part that expands all of
our understanding.
Thanks for taking the time to give a detailed "why".
Dave

Then I replied:

No Problem, I was up late sampling into the emax, so I was full of the
'afterglow' ;)

It may be possible quite soon, no website or anything yet, and I don't mail mp3's anymore, but I will spam every list I'm on when the time comes ;)
