ZIP100, Disk2File and SCSI

ZIP100, Disk2File and SCSI

2006-05-15 by dawid_marciniak

Hi everyone,

I have a few questions regarding ZIP100 Drives, Zip Disks and
Images. Hope somone here can clear up the confusion.

First I would like to find out if it is possible to make a Disk2File
image of a ZIP100 Emax floppy on WinXP(I am quite sure that
Disk2File will only work using a SCSI Zip disk connected to the PC).

Will i face any problems?

Then assuming that works, does anyone have a EMAX SE HD Plus ZIP100
Disk2File image ?

I have a broken floppy drive and would like to replace it with a
internal SCSI ZIP100 thats laying around here.

My only problem is that i cannot create format a ZIP100 disk and put
HD SE plus OS on it.

I guess the Plus os will be necessary to tell the emax what ID the
ZIP drive is set to.

I don't even know if all this is possible without actually having
the EMAX up and setting up the ID on the emax beforehand to pick up
the ZIP drive.

A lot confusion. Hope somone can help.

Many thanks in advance.
D

PS:

My Internal ZIP would will not allow me to set the ID to O which (i
think) is the default setting on the Emax.
Will i need to first boot the Emax from floppy with a HD SE Plus OS
to set the ID to 1 (My ZIP 100 is set to 1) in order to bring it up?
Where is this setting stored? On the a Memory chip on the mainboard?
Or is it a case where the HD OS Plus automatically checks for
Devices on all ID's.

Thanks a lot,
D

OK That explains a lot.

So basically swapping the floppy for a internal ZIP drive is a
myth !! The only way really would be having harddisk and Internal
zip drive connected to the SCSI Bus... HD at ID0 and the zip at
whatever. That way the emax would be able to boot up from internal
Harddisk at ID0. I will go for the external ZIP option and get a
fresh Floppy drive to boot from.

Thanks elmacaco !!

D

Youhave to boot from floppy or the HD ID 0 to boot automatically. THe Emax always boots with ID set to zero, so you need ot boot, then change it to what your zip is set at, everytime you switch it on.

I'm not sure anyone's been able to boot from a zip, but if it is set to ID zero it might happen.

Yep Hence Keep floppy and upgrate to external SCSI and forget about

Has anyone tried using Disk2File to backup Emax ZIP disks??

Re: [emax] Re: ZIP100, Disk2File and SCSI

No problem,

But I think it is worth keeping the FLoppy drive even with the HD, as the Emax HD's aren't reliable. They store info alright, but as they get old they can have problems spinning up. Mine does this from time to time and I literally punch the front panel to jump start the HD spin. :)

If some other HD problem happened the internal zip would be useless, but the floppy would let you get on with things.

Well, I like having the HD as well, but it is a bit noisy, I quite like it though, especially cuz no floppy boot and the emax runs quicker off the OS on the HD than off of a floppy.

Re: [emax] Disk2File and ZIP100

2006-05-16 by John Silveria

I'd also like to mention that I believe the PSU could not handle an internal Zip drive and would
burn out after a short while. Definitely do the external SCSI Mod and go with an external Zip
drive.

On 15 May 2006 at 22:24, elmacaco spoke unto me:

> Well, I like having the HD as well, but it is a bit noisy, I quite like it though, especially cuz no floppy boot and the emax runs quicker off the OS on the HD than off of a floppy.

Re: ZIP100, Disk2File and SCSI

2006-05-16 by jhnonnenmacher

First, Hi to All, new Member here!
Secondly, to Dawid:
Using an internal ZIP100 as the boot Drive isn't a Myth at all.
At least my Drive (Z100SI) works a treat.
To set it to SCSI ID0: Remove all three adressing Jumpers.
Here's the Procedure I got it work:
1. Set the ZIP to any ID except 0.
2. Boot Emax with OS Plus from Floppy.
3. Use the Transpose Button to select the same ID the ZIP is set to.
4. Format the ZIP.
5. Set the ZIP to ID0.
Now Emax will boot from ZIP.

Greetings, Henning

RE: [emax] Re: ZIP100, Disk2File and SCSI

2006-05-17 by Marco Barcena

I just wanted to point out that I've read in another post on the forums that
the Zip drive pulls too much power from the power supply and that it may
mess it up. I don't know if this is true because I haven't done it myself,
but I do remember somebody saying this.

Can anybody verify whether this is true?

Just thought I'd warn you about that... in case it's true.

Re: Disk2File and ZIP100

2006-05-19 by esynthesist

I've never tried Disk2File but it's no problem at all to create
backups of Emax ZIP images on PC and restoring them to EMAX Zip disks
again.
I'm using a very small self-made C-program for that purpose. It
doesn't make ISO images, just plain raw images, but that's OK.
Note that when restoring an image to a ZIP disk, the ZIP disk must be
formatted by EMAX because DOS/Mac formatted ZIP-disks are missing a
few sectors...

I check it out and will try to upload these little programs.
I also hope to release the new EMXP software soon, which will also be
able to backup/restore ZIP disks and even read/write individual EMAX
banks from/to the disks.

Re: Disk2File and ZIP100

2006-05-20 by esynthesist

Well no, I'm not :-)
I'm having trouble with the development of the new EMXP version, the
code is becoming very complex due to (some small) differences between
the specs of EMAX banks on floppy disks and EMAX banks on zip disks.
That's why the release has some delay. I still hope that a beta
version will be ready before my holiday (mid june)...

Anyway: I've put that small backup/restore program for Emax ZIP-100
disks in the files section:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/emax/files/EMXP/

Note that I have only tested this with ZIP disks on an EMAX-II
sampler. So be careful the first time you use it on an EMAX
(SE/HD/Plus) - Try it first.

By the way: the program does not support ZIP250 disks and it does not
verify if the ZIP100 disk is really an EMAX disk. As I said: it's
just a very simple program.

But it works from the commandline of Windows XP ! In fact, it only
works in Windows XP.

Hope it helps.
