boy have i got problems!

boy have i got problems!

2001-10-30 by spacesuitoption@...

Someone gave me this awesome Emax HD sampler with 3 books full of
diskettes. but the hard drive wouldn't work It reads "Hard disk
error" or "Different Software Rev" messages to me. I discovered last
night that when I boot the sampler from a floppy, it loads as OS
version 3.2. if i monkey with one particular disk though, it'll load
as OS version 1.1HD and I can see the hard drive contents, run
diagnostics and can play around with all the other buttons. So i've
been on emulatorarchive trying to figure out what to do. I ran a hard
drive test and it says it's all right. I ran all the other tests and
they say it's all right. So I'm trying to decide if I should reformat
the hard drive. (There's tons of sounds on it that I can't
save.)...and if I do reformat the hard drive, with OS version 1.1HD,
will all the disks with OS version 3.2 work. At this point I can
access most of the diskette sounds and use the system for play back
only. I do want to use the other functions of the sampler (to make
those beautiful gritty 12bit samples) but don't want to accidentally
disable the thing completely.
....any suggestions?

A reformat isn't necessary, the Emax contains a"copy software" function. It is designed
to copy newer OSs onto media (hard drives, floppies) without erasing the bank data.
Use this function, it's in Master somewhere, to copy the Emax HD 1.1 OS onto the hard
drive and onto any floppies you have that don't have the HD OS on it. Then you should
be able to boot to the hard drive and access all the floppies too.

I do wonder, have you made sure that the banks are still on the hard drive? If you ran
the "hidden" hard drive diagnostics on the hard drive then the hard drive should have
been wiped clean.

It didn't work. If I turn on the emax without a floppy inserted, then I insert a disk when asked for one and press load, It fools itself into thinking that HD 1.1 OS is loaded. I can then see the contents of the hard drive but it won't load any of it. I then tried to "copy software" or use any other function and it reads "different software rev". It'll run scan disk in this mode but it says the hard disk is ok. I tried loading the HD 1.1 OS from emulatorarchive but it won't read the floppy disk and seizes up. The emax will read floppies if I boot from a floppy with OS 3.2 and it'll occasionally let me tweak the paramaters but I can't save them. Sometimes it won't let me get into any other screens. what's your prognosis Doctor?

Put in the floppy with HD 1.1 and then power up the unit. It should boot up just fine and
when you do a Software check it should you are running OS 1.1 HD. Do not take that
disk out of the drive. At this point you should be able to copy the OS onto the hard drive.
If you can not then there is a good chance your hard drive is faulty.

If you are booting up without a disk inside the unit and it is saying you need to insert a
floppy this is a sign that the HD is bad or not compatible, no matter what the scan tells
you (and exactly what scan are you using). It is possible that the boot sectors of the HD
are bad and the scan you are using isn't recognizing that.

Remember the Emax isn't booted until it loads the OS from either a Floppy or the Hard
Disk. The OS is not stored inside the unit anywhere, it is stored on every piece of media
that it formats. If you are powering up the unit and it says you need to insert a floppy
disk then your system is not booting off of the hard drive, it is booting off of the floppy
and whatever OS is on the floppy is what you have just booted with. It isn't "fooled into
thinking HD 1.1 is loaded" it is loaded with HD 1.1.

If you boot with a floppy that has HD 1.1 on it, then take that floppy out and insert a
different floppy that has a different OS on it when you go to do certain functions, like
Copy Software, you are going to get a "different software rev" error because everytime
you access an function the Emax has to go back out to the floppy and read that part of
the OS. The entire OS is not sitting resident in memory anywhere.

Your biggest issue is going to be that an Internal Zip will toast the power supply. The
power supply in the Emax and Emax II can not handle the drain of an internal zip. Does
your Emax happen to have the external SCSI adapter?

nope.
will it fry the supply if i disconnect the hard drive and the floppy?
can i replace that with a better power supply?

for a 120 meg drive. Works just fine...

Re: [emax] boy have i got problems!

If i just disconnect the hard drive, will that mess anything up? It's extremely noisy and the emax is difficult to turn on/off because the on/off button is missing.

Just replace the HD with another SCSI one. You must know someone with a few
dead Mac's lying about... I put a Mac 40 meg SCSI in mine, then changed it
for a 120 meg drive. Works just fine...
  Cheers,

Re: [emax] boy have i got problems!

2001-11-02 by David Crosby

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP!
last night, my hard drive actually let me get into it. Half of the banks
were toast but half were accessible. I copied those banks onto floppy then
tried to reformat the HD. It wiped it clean but won't take the software. It
keeps crashing when it gets to the loading software part.I've decided that
the HD is history. But the system still works by floppy and I have many,
many samples. So i'm thinkin about installing an internal zip drive in the
system and removing that noisy hard drive. I saw a procedure for it on
emulatorarchive but the wording of the article seems to imply that it's a
only a theory. Has anyone actually installed a zip drive in the Emax HD?
Will the OS HD1.1 software format a 100mb zip disk? Will the floppy drive
work while I transfer all my files to zip disks? Any special tips on
installing a zip from anyone that's actually done it?

No matter what you unplug from the power supply a Zip drive will still burn it out. It
simply draws too much power. You might be able to replace the Power Supply, I've
heard of people doing that with the ESi-32, but I've never had a report from anyone who
has done it.

It's no big deal to go in and unplug the HD and remove it, just remember at that point
you will not want (be able?) to use the HD 1.1 OS you'll want to convert all your disks
into Emax OS 3.2. You should replace the power switch as well while you are in there.

Emax & ZIP 100 FAQs

2001-11-03 by Rob EmuArc

Hi,
An internal SCSI ZIP 100 pulls rather more 5V power than the stock
Miniscribe hard drive in an Emax, and therefore stresses the PSU more than
normal.

Miniscribe 8425S
5V 0.6A
12V 0.7A
peak 2.0A

Internal SCSI ZIP 100
5V 1A continuous
5V 1.7A peak

We have successfully run an Emax keyboard with an internal ZIP 100 and
Floppy Drive, with the Hard Disk removed. However whilst this worked for us
it could wreck your PSU - so we don't suggest you do it !!! A better and
safer alternative is to use an external ZIP(or power the internal ZIP
separately). External ZIP's are easier to locate and can be easily used with
an Emax that has already got a hard disk. Remember the Emax only formats a
maximum of 20MB on ANY drive.

Connect the internal Emax SCSI connector to a SCSI internal 50pin to
external 25pin adapter. Mount the adapter in the rear casing of the Emax as
described in the original E-mu SCSI retro article on our web site. We can
supply the adapter if you have trouble getting one, or go to www.jameco.com.
You will need to take careful precautions when drilling out the Emax casing
as it is made of conductive plastic, so please do read the E-mu arcticle. We
will be putting pictorial upgrade instructions on our web site soon.

You will need Emax Plus OS when using an external ZIP, as the ZIP can only
work on ID 5 or 6. The Plus OS enables selection of SCSI ID. We can provide
the Emax Plus OS diskette for free. An internal ZIP set to SCSI ID 0 should
work with OS HD 1.1. We have successfully run an External ZIP 100 with an
Emax HD model (OS Plus), and we have over 20 ZIP's full of factory and pro
samples. So if you do use a ZIP, you have access to an amazing new library
of sounds. The ZIP works really well with an Emax and formats in 2 seconds,
and tha horrible drive noise is gone !! The Plus OS enables you to run 2
external ZIP 100 drives which makes backups possible.

You can run OS HD 1.1 without a hard drive, it just won't be able to run any
HD instructions. It fails safe...

For anyone else on the list interested in a ZIP upgrade...Right now you need
an Emax HD model, as this usually has the correct digital board and boot
EPROM and PAL chips. Upgrades to older digital boards (e.g. early non HD
Emax's) is currently impossible, until we gain remanufacturing rights from
E-mu ( a subject that is under discussion with Dave Rossum etc.).

If anyone on the list has got an Emax (not Emax II) to work with any other
drive than a Miniscribe or Rodime 20MB, please let us know as this will help
future users as Rodimes are very short in life span (MTBF is 12k hours) and
Miniscribes are not much better !! We are trying to locate high quality
Miniscribe spare hard drives for users who have lost their hard drive, but
this is proving very difficult and the ZIP route is far more practical.

Hope this all helps.. keep the questions coming !!!

Rob

Hi,
There are two sets of interesting EIIIX sample CDROM's from E-mu...

Emulator Standards/More Standards are the original Emulator III library ,
with some familar samples for EII and Emax users but these are higher
quality.
Elements of Sound Volume 1 and 2 are the original Emax and Emax II library
in 16-bit format for the EIII/EIIIX and any sampler that can import EIIIX
samples.

These are either dated samples from the 1980's or useful retro samples -
depending on your perspective...

If you look at the Elements of Sounds bank listing you will recognise many
Emax factory samples...These CDROM's were available as a 4 set for the Emax
II.

Regards
Rob

  thanks
have you heard those emu classic emulator sample disks that are for sale
on
emu.com? do they sound similar to the original emax samples?

Alternate Hard Drives

2001-11-03 by John Silveria

I had E-mu replace my Miniscribe drive with a Seagate drive back in 1990, unfortunately
at the time I was very technically uninformed and I never thought to find out what
Seagate drive it was. My Emax unit was from Seagate, they had one for developing the
internal SCSI for the unit and they provided a new drive when the Miniscribe failed. This
drive was slower than the Miniscribe, but it lasted for the 8 years I had the unit and as
far as I know still works fine for the new owner. E-mu did inform me that there was a
40Mb Seagate that would work for storing banks, but not for booting the unit. That
information could be wrong or I could have had a different Seagate drive.

I don't know about the Emax keyboards, but there's lots of empty space
inside my Emax II rack. Certainly enough space to bolt in an additional 5v
power supply. You can pick them up from electronics surplus suppliers for
next to nothing, then make up some kind of bracket to mount them near the
existing PSU. Wire the mains input to the switched side of the power
switch, same as the existing PSU. Connect the earth to the existing PSU
earth - probably a tag on the case, and connect the 5v line to the Zip drive
and the 0v to the existing 0v connection as well as the Zip 0v.

Please don't blow yourself or your Emax up doing this. If you're not happy
about it, find someone who can do it for you.
HTH
  Gordon
