Are you able to split a file up into different sections/ keyzones or place different
regions of a sample onto different keys on the keyboard in the EXS sampler? For
example load a beat into the EXS and then have the kick drum on one keyzone or
region, have the HH on the second region, the snares on the thrid region, etc.
I use Logic 6 Platinum on a MAC G5 1.8 Dual G5 and I'm using the EXS 24 MKII
sampler. Any info is appreciated!

With Phatmatic Pro, however, it's a breeze!

Funny how everyone advices to use some other software, and no-one really answers the question :). The answer is: yes, it can be done. What you can infer from the other posts though is that it's not too easy. When you load an audio file in the EXS, you can set the sample's start and end point (in samples). Obviously this allows you to set e.g. start=0 / end=44100, and start=44100 / end=88200 for two different zones that use the same sample. It's equally obvious that this becomes quite cumbersome if you want to use 20 sections in 30 different audio files (requiring to set start/end on 600 sections by hand). For just a few zones it's not all that bad thgough: you can import the sample in the EXS, click the 'edit start/end' button which will open the sample in Logic's Sample Editor, and there you can graphically drag start and end markers around. When you're done, close the Sample Editor, and the EXS will use the start/end values you've just set. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra h @ k n o w a r e . n l Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/

I was about to start looking at Native Instrument's Kontact for sampler instead of the EXS. It seems that compared to the features of Kontact, EXS doesn't really offer much except that it is E Magic and so is Logic. Thanks again! J

I have both and hardly use Kontakt - which of these two you would prefer depends on what you want to use a sampler for. Kontakt has some sound mangling features -- which EXS24 lacks -- and a lot of pretty lame FX (chorus, compressor etc). I would rather use other (decent) FX for these purposes. If you want to build mutli-sample instruments, Kontakt's instrument editor is a nightmare. EXS24 has decent filters and is incredibly stable and efficient for bread and butter sampling tasks. As of Logic Pro it will be built into Logic (no longer an add-on) so you can share instruments/collaborate with an even larger body of Logic users. Then there is this group which is itself a good resource -- compare it to the Kontakt forum at NI and you will see what I mean. Regards, Murray

Yes, the EXS is not the hyper-blitz sound-mangling tool from your wildest dreams maybe, but: it's integrated in Logic, extremely stable, *very* CPU-efficient, sample accurate, and sounds very good. So if you want a stable, efficient sampler that will do any day-to-day tasks, you really can't go wrong with the EXS. Even better: if you get the $199 upgrade to Logic Pro (if you now have Gold or Platinum), you'll get the EXS and all other Emagic plug-ins & instruments for that money. Hard to beat that kind of offer :-). -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra h @ k n o w a r e . n l Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/
