Drum Instrument with velocity-sensitive hihats?

Drum Instrument with velocity-sensitive hihats?

2004-02-19 by Todd

I'm having a hard time making a drum instrument. I want to have snares and kicks and
whatever in the same instrument. However, I have a lot of velocity sensitive samples (like
8 snares at different volumes and tibres). I know how to arrange them with the groups i.e.
snare 1 to a group with a vel. range of 100-127. But when I get to the hi-hats, I can't
figure out a way to make them both vel. specific and at the same time but them in a mute
group. Does anyone know how to do this??? You can't assign groups to other groups can
you?

Put all your samples for a particular midi note/drum type (eg hats) in a group
and put the velocity switching on the ZONE not the group.

Make sure you have [ Zone: velocity range] ticked in the Editor's view menu.

Murray

As Murray already wrote: use the velocity-settings in the zones
rather than in the groups. And to actually add someting to Murray's
post :), for a mute group: assign a couple of hhat samples to one
group and set its polyphony to 1.

If only I could remember Sascha Frank's tip on how to get more
natural sounding mute-groups (less machinegun-like). Something like:
set polyphony to something like 3 or 4, and (?) insert a zone with a
silent sample, and then...??? Anyone recall that one?

Here's a repost of my repost of Sascha's tip ;-)

Sascha Franck posted a good workaround for this issue on this list a year or so
back. He suggested assigning 3 voices to the hat group and putting 2 dummy
zones on the closed hat note so that note on F#1 gives you three voices
sounding (two with zero volume) and note on A#1 makes only one zone sound. The
effect of this is that up to three open hat voices will accumulate =>
realistic effect with successive hits -- but as soon as you hit the closed hat
all open hat tones are muted.

Ummm ya. I'm not seeing anywhere where you can set velocities in the Zone box. Where
do you do this? I know of course how to set mute groups with the groups box though...
thats easy. That tip about the ghost samples sounds kind of interesting too. Anyway,
where do you set the velocity rang in the Zone box???

Click on the menu item "view" and you'll see zone: velocity range has no
check mark. Click it to check it, and you will see the option appear in the
zones.

Sorry... I just figured it out. Ignore the last post. I just looked at the View menu and the
"Velocity Range" option was unchecked. I've been trying to figure out a work around for
this situation for weeks! I was sure that Emagic had left out some super important feature.
For now (since Im running Logic on a Dual G5) I was just making different instruments for
snares and hi-hats and just making a mute group by setting the hi-hats to unison. But
like for one kit, I had like 7 instances of EXS running and just controlling them by cabling
them to an "intrument" and playing the midi files through that. Atleast I learned another
use for the "instrument" through all this mess.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks Murray... Thank god for people who save everything :-). When
reading it now, it somehow doesn't make sense to me. Guess I'm just
too tired -- been working alomst 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for a
couple of weeks... I'll re-read it when I've had some rest...
