Hi, Just wondering if anyone could compare the 461mb Yamaha Grand piano that came on the Logic 7 content DVD to any of the numerous recent group buy pianos? It sounds pretty good to my ears but I played bassoon in school, not a very good judge of piano's I'm afraid ;-)

Hello Jeremy,
The only pianos I have are The Old Lady and Malmsjo. I didn't even know
about the Yamaha in my Logic 7! Now that I do, I will... erase it! Now,
it's not because it's so bad, more because I can always use a spare 1/2
Gb or so, right? ;-)
Comparing the Yamaha to the Malmsjo is, IMHO, useless. They are much
too different. In fact, I could say the same about the Old Lady. Both
of the other pianos are like fine, old wines. They have 'character',
you can hear the body in the sound. The Yamaha sounds like an upright
piano in a practice booth. If you like vanilla, then be my guest! I
find the Yamaha in EXS to be bland, especially in the softer dynamics.
It just doesn't inspire me at all. There are sooooo many piano sales
these days (did you see the two new ones at northernsounds.com?), the
only reason not to get one is if you're saving up for a bigger
purchase!
My 1.60 Cnd cents,
Ned

However, this comparison of the different pianos can be a subjective issue. It also can depend on the genre of music that it is intended to be used with. I have the GigaStudio 3.0 piano (approx. 1GB), William Coakley piano, and a few smaller less than 100MB-sized pianos. Most all are 'usable', but I would not use the Coakley in a classical setting <and> I would not use the Giga piano in a jazz trio recording. (too bright) In other words, it generally depends and it's all subjective... Danny

Being a pianist, I must say I was surprised by the sound of the included piano. It is very useful in projects where the piano is used as one of many instruments. I used it for tunes with highpass EQ and with radiolike EQ and it sounds convincing to me. There are some fine presets in the channel strips for different uses. But I am still planning to join one of the group buys for projects where the piano plays an important role. I listened to different demo's en both the White Grand and the Vintaudio C7 appeal to my taste. But if you're only using the piano in productions with lots of other sounds, and don't go all the way from pp to ff, the included grand is very useful indeed.

I have a real grand piano here at home, but because of terrible acoustics I haven't been able to get a really good sound from it. But I believe I can compare the sound of piano's a bit: I agree. I have recently installed the Old Lady (Steinway) and the Emperor (Boesendorfer) from those group buys on Northern Sounds. (The group buy is still on.) I'm still tweaking them a bit, because I believe the EXS programs can be improved a little bit. Just last night I went back to the Yamaha, because I thought it wasn't too shabby for a sampled piano when I initially heard it in LP7. But the Old Lady and the Emperor blow it away completely. The Yamaha is so bland, thin... The Old Lady has loads of character, and the Emperor is 'just in front of you'. Ben

The Old Lady is 5.35 GB! I don't know what the Yamaha in LP7 was sampled from but the Old Lady was sampled with 12 velocity layers from a well maintained 1923 9ft Steinway, a model that had reached the peak of piano development. To my ears it sounds wonderful. Even though I played piano for years I never played one this good. Yes, I'm saying that the Old Lady sounds better than any acoustic piano I ever played, although I'm the first to admit that I never had access to the very best in concert halls. BTW, the Old Lady group buy is now over. The Emperor (Bosendorfer 290) is still being sold at the 60% discount for another couple of weeks: http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26687 I'm still thinking about this. Anyone who has both care to comment on the advantages of both rather than just the Old Lady? Andris

I just got my OL yesterday, and she sounds fantastic! I also didn't know about the Yamaha Grand that came with my L7. I have a Yamaha C3 at home, and I've always considered Yamaha to be a good, reliable, but ultimately kind of bland piano, the baseline against which other pianos may be judged, yet devoid of its own personality. I tried the L7 Yamaha side by side with the Old Lady, and my opinion still stands. The Yamaha is fine if you want fine. The Old Lady has depth and warmth and personality - I can smell the wood! The Yamaha is pure distilled water, and the Old Lady is a fine aged wine. I can hardly wait to take delivery on my Emperor, which I'm expecting to be a zesty Shiraz judging from the demos.
