Is there a way to use a kickdrum (live or recorded) to trigger ESX24 to replace or layer with other sounds. I'm using Logic 6.4.3 on a 1 GHz G4 laptop with 1GB ram and running MacOS 10.3.8

I often use an Alesis DM5 to do this. The DM5 has 12 trigger inputs on the back which will generate a MIDI note whenever a signal arrives. I use this live and in the studio for drum replacement (you have to move the MIDI notes a little earlier to take account of the DM5's triggering delay which is pretty short). I guess you're looking for a solution within Logic though in which case you might try Audio to MIDI Groove? As Gordon allready said, "Audio to MIDI Groove Template" is what you want. Unfortunately this is only working with recorded material. Not sure whether there's proper plugins (such as the one Peter recommended) doing a good live job. From my experience they don't. I'd rather use some piezo trigger and *whatever* hardware device (there's cheap ones, even my old GI-10 MIDI guitar converter has a monophonic audio input). - Sascha

Live you would need to use a trigger box, I used to have an AKAI thing back in the old days but live could be tricky due to a very slight delay. -- Pete Thomas www.petethomas.co.uk - Free Logic Icons, Environments and EXS Instruments

One of its features was Audio to MIDI conversion. The resulting MIDI notes would preserve many subtleties of the audio, improving the quality of the MIDI. Does anyone know if something similar is possible in Logic or something else? Andris

It won't identify pitch or individual drums for you, but you would just extract or edit bits in the midifile. I used to use this alot before Apple Loops. I think there is a free demo available. -- Pete Thomas www.petethomas.co.uk - Free Logic Icons, Environments and EXS Instruments

"Audio To Midi Groove Template" it's called and you'll find it in the sample editor. It will do whole tracks of drum recording if you like. Particularly useful if you want to replace a snare in a live drum recording. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Paul Najar Jaminajar Music Production www.jaminajar.com

I think I allready mentioned this in an earlier reply - but you're completely right, Logic does a GREAT job on this (especially since you can do it for complete tracks as well - rather than for a limited amount of 127 notes, which is what all the VST/AU slicers are doing). One of the features I'm missing the most when working with Cubase (they just left that out in SX, had been there in earlier versions), which I have to do quite sometimes these days. - Sascha

But your saying A'LOOPS will work a lot like pHATmatic pro? will it slice and extract the MIDI timing info from a loop as well? and staying a bit on group topic, I remember when LE7 first came out there was some confusion on whether the Instrument Editor feature was included or not - some said no while I thought somewhere in some group (osxaudio, kvraudio, or here) someone said yes, but it was moved. Can someone confirm one way or the other? (if it's not, then I'll just keep LE6 installed for this purpose). thanks, -russel-

I said that I used to use Phatmatik a lot before Apple Loops. I used it because it was a way of getting an audiofile to play at different tempos. It slices loops whereas as Apple Loops timestretches them, but it got the same results for my purposes. I also used to use Acid Pro and Ableton Live for timestretching. -- Pete Thomas www.petethomas.co.uk - Free Logic Icons, Environments and EXS Instruments

Seems to, but I may be going deaf in my old age! I've sold Acid and would like to sell Ableton. Even if it's not quite as good, the creative advantages from the workflow, ie not needing to import or rewire, makes me write better tunes anyway, and that's what matters to my client(s) -- Pete Thomas www.petethomas.co.uk - Free Logic Icons, Environments and EXS Instruments
