What difference between 'instrument' and 'instrument ECO'?

What difference between 'instrument' and 'instrument ECO'?

2005-03-15 by sc@rowatworks.com

Hi,

What is the meaning of the term "ECO" that's at the end of the EXS24
instruments that are shipped with Logic Pro? There's a duplication of these
instruments, and they seem completely identical. I.e. "Slap Bass" and "Slap
Bass ECO" have the same settings, use the same samples, and, on a quick
first listen, sound the same. I'm at a loss to understand why they're both
there. Almost all the instruments are duplicated in this way.

?

Hi Steven

I t basically means "economy" whereas the normal sample sets are "business class", if you
like ;-). If you are running short of resources, and the ECO version is adequate for your
needs, than it can be of help in a situation wherre a full sample set might cause memory
or "disk too slow" problems etc.

kind regards

Re: [EXS] Answers to -- What difference between 'instrument' and 'instrument ECO'? + Microtuning & portamento + ECO

HI Steve;

One posting to answer your three recent questions;-)

1. "ECO" stands for economical, and is a lower "quality" sample file to
reduce byte space and load time.

2. By definition JI intervals are always integer ratios; e.g. 3/2; 4/3;
5/3; 5/4; etc.
The aim of JI is to minimise "beating";
(if that can considered to be a reasonable intention is another
question).

Another downside is that using JI the interval sizes vary depending
upon the supposed positions of the interval in the scale.

See:

The very good microtonal dictionary/encyclopedia by Monz for
definitions of terms used in tuning theory:

http://www.tonalsoft.com/enc/encyclopedia.aspx

3. Using EXS you can change the portamento rate using the "Glide"
control which determines the time it takes for the pitch to slide from
one note to another.

see page 545 of Logic Pro 7 plug-in reference manual for details of
"remote, Glide, and pitcher" parameters.
