The itunes encoding algorithm is the best one available, licensed from
the Fraunhofer institute... I think you might want to check again.

Encode one of the songs already done with soundjam using itunes, and
listen to both of them using quicktime or any mp3 player.

I have. And I am not at all satisfied.

I have. It doesn't sound the same.

BTW. there has been quite some people talking about the difference in
quality of encoding.
Spark has been mentioned favorably.

I am not sure I absolutely trust your knowledge about "the best" encoder.
Have you seen http://mp3licensing.com/mp3/mp3pro.html
I know you can't play it back on itunes or a regular mp3 player, but it's
definitely "better";-)
And the fact that a company has a Fraunhofer license doesn't mean it has to
be _the_ Fraunhofer codec. That has to do with patent.(For all I know itunes
does, but not necessarily)

Cheers!

What's this all about? I've never viewed mp3s with such scrutiny. I've
always thought of them as far better than tape, but not nearly as good as a
CD. I take them with a grain of salt. They sound great on the iPod in
headphones, but I don't use that for my main stereo speakers in the living
room, so... Just curious what your application is and what merits such
hair-splitting analysis. Thanks in advance for humoring me. -Jer

I've always been comfortable with SoundJam's results. I generally do 192 to
conserve space, since I try to balance quality vs. space on the portable
device (actually, it was my Christmas gift to my wife and no I don't use the
gift I gave her. I simply burned many of the mp3s that were initially placed
on the iPod).

spectrasonics demos?

2002-02-21 by Ian Honeyman

does anyone know if spectrasonics is still doing the monthly demos thing? I
downloaded a few of them and thought they were great, but I've been gone for a
few months and tried to look for them today but couldn't find it on the
spectrasonics page. Did they stop the demos?

Well for starters, the MP3 pro format doesn't seem to have a Mac
encoder/decoder:-) And it's NOT an Mmp3 file... its different.

You can play it back on a regular player, it just won't sound as good as it
will though a native mp3 pro converter.. (Check out the info)

And aren't we getting a bit finicky about a NON PRO format any ways. I only
use an mp3 file to demo an idea for some one. I would then send a CD if they
want to hear it any better, or send a 256kps file, which will sound much
closer to the original file..

There are several radiostations preferring mp3 to wave.(I do not agree with
they're choice.)
My search is for the best encoder there is .No matter the price.
I get well paid for delivery, and sound, not format.
If a radio prefers mp3, I try to deliver it at least at the competitors
standards.
I'm pleased if I can humor you....
My job is to deliver.....whatever format.....

Funny. Actually, your response is very, very interesting to me. Thanks for
being so thorough.

I wish somebody made a mp3 plug-in.
If it was the absolute best one, I'd pay 200$ for it.

Either this, or I'd love to be able to directly import mp3's into logic
without converting first to aiff.

This would make it easier to share files with others.
