There should be a MIDI learn function for each and every parameter in
Emagic's synths AND in Logic generally.
All modern softsynths offer such a functionality - only Emagic's softsynth
MIDI implementation is extremely poor to say the least. You can either
forget about it or fool yourself to death with tons of transformers and
cables.

Have a look at RGCaudio's Pentagon and Zeta, or at Kontakt, or at most other
N.I. softsynths. Or look at the Linplug ones, etc pp... - if there isn't a
clever "learn" function you'll find at least *some* sort of assigning
function.
Emagic's synths and Logic simply offer nothing!

This IMO is ridiculous and I can't remember how often I complained about it.
Maybe Emagic wants to sell Logic Control units - because that's the only way
to control their synths using an external controller without wading through
environment hassles.

Sascha

That would really lower my opinion of them. Perhaps it is Steve Jobs'
sometimes-unscrupulous decision-making that is playing a roll. He does it
with Mac hardware. OSX is gorgeous. I bet millions would switch from Windows
if it ran on a PC processor. Egos man, they ruin everything.

Seriously, though (to respond to myself). I bet it's an oversight in
Emagic's scramble to make killer soft-synths. Hope they fix this particular
problem. After a bit of thought, I find myself doubting it's intentional.

Although I agree with you that there is some 'ego' involved here, it is also
about survival. What Apple and Steve Jobs would like you to do (as witnessed
by their ad campaign at the moment) is switch from PC to Mac. Releasing an
intel-based OSX version gives you *no* incentive whatsoever to do this.

From a business point of view, it does not make any sense since Apple sells
hardware. Now, if Apple got completely out of the hardware market and only
created software, then that would be a different thing. I'm sure that you
would then see OSX for Intel-based machines.

Just MHO,
Fernstudio

[OT] Apple's marketing strategy.

Good points... I bet the profit margin on a $130 operating system on
millions of PCs is better than the margin on thousands of Macs. This was
Apple's fatal flaw when Microsoft took over the market. I know it's a risk,
but Steve has an addiction to hardware -- his hardware -- because it looks
so cool (even if it is less powerful). That's where the ego comes in. But,
as you point out, they would want to protect their current investment in
hardware development and keep a good thing going (stay in the black, not
take such a risk). So... you are right. However, my point of ego is still
valid. I love apple, but Steve can be very smug. Alas, this strays further
and further from the focus of the EXS24. I still believe Emagic is innocent
until proven guilty of the CC non-standardization. -Jer

Dude -- I think the point Jer is making is that there_are_ more than a few
dollars to be made selling just software.

Look at M$.

PC hardware companies break their necks competing to bring cheap fast hardware
to market and M$ sits back and collects the toll as OS supplier. They ship CDs
that cost nothing to make -- these days you don't even get a manual. Their
expenses are marketing, software development, and lawsuits -- in that order
probably.

Apple makes software for a tiny market -- it's own hardware. This could change
but only if Steve could wean himself and the rest of Apple off the "cool
looking hardware" thing. The laughable "switch" campaign ("I couldn't find my
files." -- give me a break) would be consigned to the nearest wheelie bin in
the event that Apple reconceived its business strategy.

M
