Recording to audio with EXS

Recording to audio with EXS

2002-12-30 by steinway03 <ltarof@rogers.com>

When using EXS24 virtual instruments, I can always hear the instrument
in record and playback (set up as an audio instrument, using MIDI
controller to play into the virtual instrument). However, I can't seem
to record to audio. All my MIDI instruments go easily to audio upon
record; I have them set up through OMS. What step am I missing to
record virtual instruments to audio? For that matter, I can't seem to
grasp how to mix multiple audio tracks to one stereo track.

Thanks,
Larry

P.S. I have read the FAQs, but maybe I missed something.

Bounce, on the master fader. Solo the midi track, hit the BNCE
button, wait a bit, done.

Thx for the bounce suggestion. Here's my dilemma. When AudioInst 1 is
set to be Cha = "Instrument 1", then "bounce" doesn't appear on the
master fader. If, instead, Cha = "Output 1-2", bounce does appear, but
when I click "bnce" I get a message that there is nothing to bounce.

This is in contrast to the behavior in MIDI where I set up the track
mixer, hit "record" for Audio 1 and get an audio recording either as
SDII or AIFF.

What's my missing step?

Cheers, Larry

It does. It's just not the fader called "master" but the one called
"Output 1-2".

...then you've changed the kind of object it is, and hence have lost
the inserted VSTi, and so:

...which is correct.

You should look at the object whose Cha is set to "Output 1-2".
*That* has the BNCE button on it. Make sure that on Instrument-1 the
output poup is set to "Output 1-2". And in the Bounce dialog, enter
proper start and end times.

This is totally unrelated to turning MIDI tracks for external synths
into audio btw (which you're talking about in your last paragraph).

That did the trick. Thanks so much!

I notice that the output is into two files labeled .aif and .air (which
I assume means aif left and aif right?). Two follow up questions:

1. Is there a setting whereby the stereo output can be directed into a
single aif stereo file?
2. When I try to convert the separate l and r files to a stereo file, I
usually get "no split files selected" despite that I clicked on them.
I got it to convert once, but don't realize exactly what I did. (a)
What is the procedure to convert to stereo file? (b) Whenever I've
done audio, the suffix .aif appears, but not this time. Why? And is
this really an aif file?

Cheers, Larry

Welcome...

You mean .ail instead of .aif I suppose? Yes, that's left & right.

>1. Is there a setting whereby the stereo output can be directed into a

Options > Preferences > Audio Preferences: uncheck "Force record &
convert interleaved into split stereo file(s)". Also search the
online help for "interleaved".

Audio window: both the "Audio File" and "Edit" menus have options
regarding split stereo files. Never used them myself, so can't
comment any further. However, once more look up "interleaved" in
the online help.
