When you get it would you mind describing it either here or on my personal address (below). I have Steinway B, the Bosendorfer and the free Akai, but sometimes I think I need a more subtle, darker tone and judging from the demos on the site the Malmsjö Acoustic Grand could be it.

Yavuz,

I own and love Garritan Orchestral Strings
(http://www.gigastrings.com/home.html). Conversion into EXS was very good,
but not perfect (it's best on a Giga). It has many articulations, a
beautiful sound. That said, Quantum Leap Orchestra should be pretty amazing
as well (http://www.soundsonline.com/orchestra.shtml). I've also heard
great things about Symphonic Strings
(http://www.sonicimplants.com/Strings/index.asp) - it has a fuller, more
'hollywood' sound.

Favorite Piano?

I know this has come up before, but I want to hear current feedback on
people's top choice for their favorite Piano banks (Sampe-based for Virtual
Instrument, doesn't matter as long as it's host compatible).

Thanks in advance,

Hello,

I have been listening to the demo of sonic implants, gigastrings and Vienna
Symphonic Library
³j¹en suis tombé sur le cul² / WOW ! I can throw my Virtuoso 2000 in the
dustbin

How do hey program the articulations, you need to change sound for each
articulation or something has been done so it is more easy to handle.

What does Giga that EXS 24 cannot do

Also my main concern it is nice to have a whole library under your finger
tips, but each EXS instrument uses a lot of memory, how do you solve this !

My Last questions for today :

* Motu and Akai are coming out with new software samplers how do they
compare with Giga and EXS ?
* What is the link for Gigasampler ?
* What is the link to have a demo of Quantum leap ?

Thanks in advance.

When multiple articulations are within one loadable instrument you can use
keyswitching (usually deep notes at the bottom of the controller and out of the
instruments normal range -eg hit C1 and you get articulation A henceforth, Hit
C#1 and get articulation B until you hit another keyswitch etc) or you can use
a controller (mod wheel >64 gives a different articualation to modwheel <64).

No problem -- use sample streaming. With the EXS24 it is called Virtual
Memory. Go to the bottom of the "options" list on the EXS24 GUI and you will
see "Virtual Memory" -- set it to active. Of course every sampler voice playing
is like a hard disk audio track running so if you are trying to use a lot of
audio tracks (or a lot of bounced tracks) you might run into the limitations of
your hardware especially on a Laptop. Samples on one drive(s) and Audio on
another is a good way to go.

Motu and Akai are vapour at this stage. In the vapour phase they are very
capable. We will have to wait and see what they deliver.

Gigastudio --

http://www.nemesysmusic.com/products/index.html

GigaStudio is made by Nemesys who are owned for the last year or two by Tascam.

You should be able to find links to all the major Giga Libraries including
Quantum Leap products on the Nemesys site.

My favourite is the Giga Steinway B, the only problem (a pretty big one) is, although the EXS is giga compatible it won´t be able to play this straight out of the box. To make it fit on 2 CDs it has been packed and only Gigastudio can unpack it. If you buy this one make sure that you have a version of Gigastudio within reach.

If you slap a bit of PSP's very nice piano verb onto it it lives up quite a
bit more, IMO.

Steinberg the Grand (don't if this is what you mean with 'host compatible').
You have to love the 'clean EQ pop sound' of that one though. I wouldn't use
it for Jazz or classical.

Well, that depends on the type of music you are in for.

IMO The Grand is not very suiteable for classical music. It is nice
for what it does but I personally dislike the high register. It simply
sounds too artificial for my ears (or more precisely the demo on
Steinberg's Website does sound that way).

Almost a year ago I had come across a (giga-related?) forum which
had pointers to many different piano samples. If I recall it correctly
there was a site dedicated to comparing various piano samples.

Unfortunately I have lost the URL but I guess I'd be able to find
that site again.

Back then I had downloaded lots of sample-MP3s. A couple of MIDI files
(available for download) played with the various samples and ROM Piano
modules and recorded as MP3.

*Very* interesting.

I'll try to research that particular URL. However I seem to recall
back when The Grand was new there had been a discussion on the LUG
and someone had provided the pointer to the aforementioned forum
from where I had found the comparison site. Searching the archive
should help here.

Best,
Michael

Thanks for providing it -- saves me some time researching.

Anybody interested in piano sounds definitely should check out

pianos sound in different genres.

I think that the best piano is the Bardstown studio one... but it has a very
sparkling sound like the original Bosendofer Imperial. Some like, some does
not like this sound. Anyway it is the best with the Steinway B from E/W

Thanks for your input Nikko,

Personally, I'm looking for a piano that has many velocity samples, so that
I can get that very soft sound (pp or ppp samples) that is often missing in
virtual pianos.

I agree. You can't beat this one for the money. The samples are decent
and with a bit of tweaking and programming you can make a very
expressive piano out of them.

Well, I've made my choice! I'm buying the Malmsj\ufffd Acoustic Grand (100 US).
It's not suited for every style, but for what I'm looking for (subtlety,
soft mystery), it's getting a lot of praise. You can hear some demos here:

PS: I'm sure I'll pick up another one at a latter date for gigs that
require a louder, more agressive tone.

I have this piano sample set and it sounds quite pleasing on music like the
Chopin Nocturnes which are played with the sustain pedal down most of the time.

There is a complete set of midi files of all the Chopin Nocturnes, Preludes,
Waltzes etc at

http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/4279/MIDI.html

This piano is not the bright close-miced sound that you often hear in romplers
and other sample sets but more like the classical recording sound where the
piano is heard in the context of the room.

The limitation for me is that all the samples were with the pedal down (unlike
most others which have multi-velocity sets with and without the sustain pedal).
The result is a very resonant sound which can get a bit overwhelming for me on
some kinds of piano parts -- especially dissonant voicings and parts where a
lot of notes are ringing on. The same parts would be fine on a real grand piano
or other sampled pianos in my experience.

I think it is worth having -- especially if you already have some of the more
in-your-face pianos and want something that sits back a little more. I would be
interested to see some other opinions.

Murray

Here's another one that may interest
There is a Schimmel Grand in gig format at this adress:

http://www.belfort-musique.com/realprosounds.html

The piano is in RAR 3.0 format and is about 70 MB to download -- expands to 220
MB gig file. The site is in French but the creator of the piano invited people
on the Kontact forum to download it as he is going to build a new one soon. I
gathered from his post that this "old piano" is now a freebie although the site
may indicate that it is shareware.

I just downloaded and tried out the free Schimmel Grand (4 velocities,
btw). My first impression is that it is quite metallic sounding, not enough
warmth, particularly in the middle and low registers. It also sounds to my
ears like it was miced close up. I would prefer more room tone. But hey! -
it's free!!!

Thanks for the tip about MacPAR, it worked beautifully.

All the parts downloaded fine over here. They are part of a splitted
selfextracting .exe file, created with WinRar.
I wouldn't happen to know how to help you with that (as I don't know if
there's any Mac tool opening such .exe files), maybe someone with a fast
host could offer the extracted .gig file (it's 222MB).

What happened when you tried to download part 2?

If it is just not available on the site any more, he may have withdrawn the
piano for some reason (eg too many downloads = too much expense for him).

Might be worth trying at another time in case the site was overloaded -- it
might easily have a limit on simultaneous connections.

I just checked, the files are still there. Did you try "save target as"
inside your browser? Your browser might think it's no real file and try to
display the binary data instead...

OK simple problem -- your browser is trying to download the RAR files as a text
file.

Right click on the link and choose "save link target as" or similar.

I used Get Right to select all 22 parts and left it to download them in
sequence overnight.

I think I can help with the hieroglyphics. When I have that happen I believe
it is because my Mac is assuming I am downloading a text file (the
hieroglyphics). Just hold down option when selecting the download link and
select "save to disc" or similar. This forces the tiny piece of silicon to
do the right thing.

Hey thanks Bob...that worked... at least in Exploder....I mean
Explorer. I tried it in Safari the new Mac (Beta) browser and it
didn't seem to make any difference.

Got my Malmsj\ufffd piano today - it's amazing what you can fit in an envelope
these days! ;-)

First impression: character. This is not your swiss-army-knife grand. It's
round, has LOTS of resonant tone (sustain pedal down), and a dynamic that
favours the low end. That means that if, like me, you're looking for a
soft/very soft piano sound, look no further. This is one subtle baby. I
will use it mostly for film and tv scoring. Actually, I'm working on a
thriller/horror film right now, and it's the perfect sound (along with
Absynth, Atmosphere and the fabulous Prosonous Prepared Piano). I would not
recommend it for rock or pop. But hey, at that price for a piano, you can
easily by a couple more (just get a big mailbox...).

The latest issue of Electronic Musician (Feb 2003) features a comparison of
23 Sampled Grand Pianos!!! I recommend buying it (gotta support), but for
those who can't wait or are a little short, here's the full article. Scroll
down past the description of what a grand is, and you'll find all the usual
suspects:
