The EXS isn't multitimbral and therefor doesn't need (or supply) any MIDI channel dependent information. You need to open a new instance for each track. Regards, Sascha

However, supposedly the EXS24SP is multi-timbral. I wasn't aware of it, an Emagic rep at Namm told me. That sort of sucks that the cheaper version is multi but the full version is not. I'm sure that will change in a future update.....

Thanks for your reply, but i'm still unclear as to why exs24 appears
under a multi instrument sub menu in the mixer channnel? the choices
are ... mono, stereo, or multichannel and exs24 appears both under the
stereo and multi channel menu's there must be a reason for this, no?
I'm using Logic 5.5 under Mac OS 9.2.2 btw.

I'm using Logic 5.5 under Mac OS 9.2.2 btw. The EXS24 can only load one program per instance. The sounds in this program can be routed to multiple outputs (for instance if you load a drum program you could have the kick going to one channel, the snare to another etc.). You cannot load many programs and have these triggered by different MIDI channels. Hence the EXS24 is multichannel, but not multitimbral. -- helge

The multichannel instruments are instruments that can use multiple outputs -- which has nothing to do with MIDI channels per se. I.e. your EXS instrument can have e.g. 2 different layers (groups), both of which are sent to different outputs for different processing. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com

Hee hee, i'm still confused, sorry, i'm showing my clueless side here, ok
let me ask you this if i can figure out how to assign the kick to midi
channel one and the snare to midi channnel 2 ( which i can't figure right
now so if you have the time ; ) ) can i then somehow put different effects
on each part? say reverb on the snare and compression only on the kick? or
am i totally way off here, and if so , can anyone give me an example of how
this multichannelness would be useful.
cheers chris

Geez, Chris. Listen: YOU CAN'T DO THIS. To do what you want, you need to use 2 EXS24s. That's the only way. There are NO MIDI channels to speak of. The multi out refers to AUDIO not MIDI. NO MIDI. NO MIDI. NO MIDI. Think of the EXS24 as an outboard piece of gear with only ONE midi channel, if you must. Only you have a bunch of these single-channel instruments. -Jer

Forget different MIDI channels, the multichannel concept refers to the audio samples used by EXS24. Here's how you use the multichannel functionality: Put the EXS24 on a track (using the MultiChannel version) Load up your desired program in EXS24. Open the instrument editor. Select a zone and put a checkmark in the box labelled EXS output. You will now se a field next to the checkbox where the default value is "Main". Here you can select other outputs (e.g. 3/4, 5/6 etc.) Zones or groups that are routed to "Main" will be sent to the instrument channel you have selected for the EXS24. If you select other output channels, these are routed to Aux-objects (which were new in Logic 5.2). If you have a drum program for the EXS24, you can send the kick drum to one Aux giving it one kind of treatment, snare drum to another Aux giving it other effects etc. The input source of an Aux channel is selected with the input assignment pop-up menu. The EXS24 has 5 stereo output pairs and 6 individual mono outputs. The first 10 EXS24 outputs are always configured as stereo pairs. Outputs 11 through 16 are mono outputs. Hope this helps. -- helge

But you CAN do this with only one use of the EXS24 with no MIDI channel (or one if such a visualization is helpful to you). You control the outputs in the EXS24 Edit screen. You can send a single zone or an entire group to a different output. I can't spell this out in detail as it would take too long. You'll have to play with it. Suffice it to say that you will have to create some AUX channel strips in the environment in order to be able to send out something other than the main. Given your limited experience with Logic, I suggest you use one EXS24 for your kick and another for your snare, each with their own insert effect or send to bus effects. Good luck. -Jer >> now so if you have the time ; ) ) can i then somehow put different effects >> on each part? say reverb on the snare and compression only on the kick? or

Awesome explanation, thanks so much, exactly what i needed to know, i knew
i'd get there if i kept acting dumb!
