I am building some libraries where different sounds use the same file names. Will this present a problem in the future? They are in separate directories, but should I use several of these instruments in one song and then do 'save project' will I run into trouble? Colin Miller

I think the EXS is smart enough to only deem same-named samples identical if they're really identical, up to byte-count and such (i.e. not just identical names). But I try to avoid using identical names whenever I can, just to be safe :-). You could try though: take 2 different (copies of) audio files, give them identical names, and create 2 instruments based on them, using both in one song. Save the song, and close it. Then move both samples to new directories, and reload the song: see if both EXS's still play the proper file, or if Logic puts up a dialog, saying it's confused... -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com

It's kinda what I figured but wasn't sure and haven't had enough time to experiment(hopefully next week I will). I like to retain the sample name of the library it came from or if it's an audio CD (as in this case) the name listed in the documentation. And in this recent case each different snare sampled used identical names and was determined by the folder it resides in. I wonder now if using an external editor (such as peak) to modify the samples would then confuse EXS. Again something I can experiment with but won't have a chance for a little while. Colin Miller

I had two totally different instruments in different folders called "cello" and each time I opened the song, the EXS chose the "first" one it found (which was the wrong one) in the main sampler instruments hierarchy. So yes, having the exact same name for instruments is problematic. I renamed one of them and that solved it. All this in Logic 5.2 with just one of the cello isntruments instantiated in the song. -- Eli Krantzberg Nightshift Orchestra / Almat Productions http://www.nightshiftorchestra.com

Is there a way to rename the files after having created a ton of instruments with EXS being able to find them? Colin Miller

Eli is talking about EXS *instruments* -- i.e. the .exs files in the Sampler Instruments folder, while I was talking (and you were too, I thought) about the *samples* used by the EXS instruments. Instruments have to have unique names, but samples can (I think) have the same name since, as I wrote before, the EXS is smart enough to distinguish like-named but bitwise non-identical samples. Just wanted to make sure no-one gets confused... -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I was specifically referring to the exs "instruments". -- Eli Krantzberg Nightshift Orchestra / Almat Productions http://www.nightshiftorchestra.com

For me it's just samples themselves that share names, but I would like to do some editing on them in peak instead of sample editor. I will find out for myself eventually, but if anyone already knows, I wonder if that could jeopardize EXS's ability to recognize the sample (say if the length is changed). If no one knows, I will do some testing next week and post my results. Colin Miller

If it finds multiple samples with the same name, it'll ask which one you want to use. It then transparently writes the complete filepath in the instrument file (the .exs file). So if you later decide to edit the file and e.g. shorten it, it should either load without complaints, or the EXS should ask which file you want to use if you have multiple files. You might still run into problems though, since the instrument also contains info on sample start- and end-points. If you change the length, the end-point obviously changes. No idea what this will cause the EXS to do... -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra <h@...> Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com

I think this is what the Project Manager in Logic 6 is designed to do.... if you rename a sample it should update all EXS sampler instruments that use that sample. If you rename a sampler instrument it should update all songs that use that Instrument.. I know for sure that it works with Logic Songs and their related audio files. I'll have to test renaming EXS instruments in the Project Manager Danny

I have some sample instruments that are a part of '56 Stratocaster (extremely good, by the way) that have samples behind each key and something like 16 layers of samples behind each of those keys, four groups of four that are key switched. These can take as long to load as many new patches (that haven't had the sample locations catalogued) if not much longer. Is this typical for such complex instruments or is something wacky going on here? Yes, streaming is on. Bob Vandiver -- OK, enough conservatism already. Where is the compassion?
