EXS wishes

2003-04-30 by jeffp06

Hello,

Could we imagine some additional functions when we work with
groups.

I'm working with copy and paste to build layered instruments.
Each time I paste a lot of keygroups, the are assigned to a new
group, Great !

BUT

1/ I can't mute each group to hear the with/without sound.

2/ I can't transpose my group, so I move my keygroups one half
tone at a time...

Could we imagine a "mute switch" on groups and a "move
assigned keygroups left/right"

Please ?!

Yes, I'd *love* that too.

Select group, pick the menu item "select zones in group" (or whatever
it's exact name is -- can be done by keycommand as well), use the
keycommand "moves zones" or "move zones with keynote". Very fast.

Sure -- some more enhancements would be great.

Give the groups a name instead of the default "Group # X" and they will retain
the name when pasted.

A simple workaround is to reduce the volume on the group to the minimum
setting.

You are using the keycommands for moving zones for this? You can move the key
note with the sample or not depending on which keycommand you use. A one octave
transposition takes about 2 seconds with the keycommands.

Does posting wishes for the EXS24 on this list have any real impact? I've
done it a few times because I know we have Emagic beta testers in here. But
does anyone at Emagic really listen to any of our rhetoric? It would be nice
to know. Seems there's no place intense users of the EXS24 have a collective
voice for lobbying Emagic. This is as good a place as any. I hope someone
out there is listening to us. Some things like drag and drop support have
floated by us for several years now; you start to get the impression that
these important requests are completely ignored. Routing and Giga support is
great, but there are elementary shortcomings that make competing products
much more attractive to many people, not enough for me to jump ship... but
still. Example: everyone at the local keyboard department I shop at has
switched to Kontakt because of ease of programming. My point is, this isn't
trivial. Emagic is losing business because of this. You'd think someone
would care what the most advanced and intermediate users think. I'll get
down off my soap box now, but I hope we are not all just screaming into the
wind. Global control over all elements and drag and drop are a must.
Emapple, stop dragging your feet and start dragging my samples! -Jer

I'm sure that eMagic developers know where to look for feedback. We
know, for example, that some of them read the LUG which is pretty
tightly related to this list.

But even if they were living in a vacuum, there's no way that they could
not know that something has to be done with the editor in the EXS. So
just be patient. Being an Apple company now, they really can't talk
about what improvements they are working on or make promises about what
will be in new versions. And there's a lot of other non-programming
issues the EXS team has to deal with right now too, like the VSL release
and the "special tools" that are supposed to be added into the ESX to
make that work, and porting the EXSP to AU.

So things may be a little rough right now, but don't despair. eMagic is
getting a lot of good press for the EXS and they are certainly not going
to just let it sit there and fade away. They are going to work hard to
improve it. I think it's a good idea to brainstorm and post
"wish-lists" here. But the eMagic team has a very full plate right now,
so don't be offended if your "enhancement" isn't in the next release.

Cheers,

Well, I'm not that insistent, but I see where you are going. I'm not as
desperate as it may have sounded. I am simply observing that this forum has
made numerous requests for changes that we feel are more important, that
have largely been ignored to date. You'd think our immediate concerns, as
users, would take precedent; but they don't! The enhancements you mentioned
are important, but not as urgent to most users. Seems like backwards logic
to me (no pun intended). I know eventually they'll address these concerns,
but it seems to me their priorities are a little skewed. Perhaps I'm making
assumptions about people's priorities. If my aim is off, I apologize. I
don't claim to be the EXS24 user spokesperson. I know that a lot of Vienna
users are eagerly awaiting the enhancements you spoke of. Anyway, enough
venting. Thanks for your well-meaning response. -Jer

As a non-EXS user, the EXS file management nightmare is what is putting
me off changing to EXS from SoftSampleCell. I just want to store a
project's sample files with all the other project data so that I can
recall that particular project in its entirety from thousands of
others, and not worry about scanning a million hard drives, or whether
the original EXS instrument has has been changed in the last 5 years,
or deleted or renamed or whatever. Unfortunately, judging by Apple's
file management on things like iPhoto and iTunes, it seems unlikely
that the future direction will be towards making file management more
relaxed.

Unfortunately, it's the old story of commercial survival. It's more
important to spend time attracting new customers with new features than
fixing all those annoying bugs that we long-time Logic users have been
moaning about for years! With each new release the software feels
flakier and less stable as these bugs build up. I first started using
Logic in 1993 and there are bugs in it now that eMagic knew of then!

Don't forget it's always a good idea to send a copy of your wish to
support@... ... Since I have not ever seen any of the
@... guys write to this list I highly recommend doing that just
to be 100% sure they see it.

Hi Ian,

There's good news. In Logic 6 with the new Project Manager, there is a great new feature. Under the main file menu there is a new command called "save as project". Logic can then save all the relevant files for your song in one location; including EXS instruments, samples, plugin settings, audio files, etc. It really is very intelligently laid out. You can even save unused audio to a spearate folder. And you have many options as to wether you "move" or "copy" each calss of file, etc. It's very elegant. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this on the LUG.

And FTR, I still haven't given up the ghost on my old SC ll card!! Softsamplecell may be cool. But EXS is waaay cooler.

First off, I did not write the above. Please be do not carelessly
attach credits to quoted emails.

Have you played around with the new Project Manager in Logic6? It does
a VERY nice job of organizing and keeping track of not just songs, but
also sample instruments and all the samples that go into those
instruments. It seems to me as though they are headed in the right
direction (though it could still use some work... the interface is scary).
