2101 overheating

2017-05-10 by bardkin@...

GSP 2101 ver 1.03.02 (pre Artist series)

Anyone run into this-
I am messing around playing or programming and after about an hour I get stuck on whatever patch I'm in at that moment. I can keep playing, but I can't change to another program. I turn it off, then back on and I get the boot screen where it just sits. I can't make a noise at all.

So I let it sit for an hour or so then it works again.

I am thinking that there is an overheating issue. Here is what I know:

I opened it up a few days back to check the EPROM numbers so I could order my Artist (ver 3) upgrade. While I was in there I checked the visible soldering joints, made sure socketed chips were tight, pulled and tested the tubes (which are normal).

I didn't see a fuse in there, and I don't see one on the schematics. I got the MIDIWizard program installed and configured and was able to pass the 2 loop tests while the unit was in it's locked up state, so I *think* it is a problem in the bus/ram/CPU area that's not visible. (I did order the 20Mghz processor upgrade as well, maybe that fixes it...)

So.. Anyone here run into similar issues and know the fix?

Thanks

I very much doubt a factory reset would solve an overheating problem

I can't find where you said you performed a reset, but I'm pretty brain dead these days.

Re: [gsp-2101] 2101 overheating

2017-05-10 by Ken Rowe

My apologies. I did not "as stated" say I reset it.

Well, I have taken it apart to test the actual switches. They all have reflex, but I still have the problem. The real difference is that if I don't hold button 1 when I power it up, the little Digitech emblem cycles then disappears. When I hold button 1 and start it, it flashes to an asterisk. Still no joy.

Also- when I hold button "2" and start it I get the "Digitech Crew" scrolling across the screen. So the ROM is working. (Ron Baker, Mark Greenhalgh, Jim Pennock, Wayne Moss, John Louder, Brian Pett, Jason Lamb, Billy Clemments, Randy Thorderson, Brian Write, Rob Urry)

I took it apart (face plate and display board) to clean the switches. I did continuity test and all pins on all switches have continuity. All the plastic switch covers are working. Looking at the schematic and the pcb, all pins should have continuity with any ground source. So, I'm going to have to check each state on each switch. I'm not ruling it out, but I don't think it is a stuck button. (maybe a bit more deoxit...)

None of the caps are bulging or leaking (doesn't mean they haven't gone bad)\ufffd and I don't see any bad soldering joints but I haven't flipped the main board to look there. Too much work unless I wanna replace all the caps or something.

Im putting it to rest for the night. I'll get back on it tomorrow sometime.

Thanks for your responses though!

How old is the battery? Have you tried changing it?
And check all the power supply solder joints and connectors. And when it freezes, check the voltage regulator voltages.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: 2101 overheating

Actually the first time I cracked it open I changed the battery- got a
few of them in April for some other devices I have.

I got it booted up for a while last night and it never did get hot at
all. (except of course the transformer and tubes) So I am now chasing
down test point voltages as I can find them. There are quite a lot of
regulators and op amps to look at so it may be a while. Hopefully have
it fixed by the time the upgrade parts get here.

ok. Got a tip to replace a voltage regulator. Its supposed to pass 5v but was closer to 7. Found a replacement and soldered it in. (The soldering they used was petrified. Took a whole bunch of heat to get it out and clear the holes..) Anyway, that, for now, seems to have at least got it running again. I will test it tonight and see how long it works.

On a second note-
Got the new eproms in and switched out. so now Im on version 3 "Artist". I still have the crystal and associated caps to swap out for the 20 Mghz upgrade. Gonna leave the case open tonight and see how long it stays on. If it stays on for a while I will pull the mboard out and swap the new components in. otherwise, back to the drawing board...

A faster processor will make more heat.

I would have someone look at the power supply filter capacitors. When those age out, they act more like heat generators than what they're supposed to do.
Replacements are cheap . Knowing which ones takes time and exp.

Re: [gsp-2101] Re: 2101 overheating

2017-05-12 by Ken Rowe

meh..Caps are caps. They look good and all, and when its working I don't
hear any noises or anything but that doesn't mean they arent going bad.
They can last a week or 20 years..

I do some "Hobbyist" electronics. I used to be a computer hardware
programmer and repair- back when you didn't just swap out a sound card
cause they costed 100's of dollars.. Ive also built a few amplifiers, a
few stereo repairs etc. Plus I have a friend where I live that's fully
certified in several major companies- Fender, Korg, and Yamaha to name a
few. And he actually worked for those places testing circuits and
helping with designs and such. What I don't know he helps me out with.
So I'm good on experience for chasing down issues...

But thanks though!

So I ran it last night- from about 9:30 - 12:00 pm and it didn't skip a beat. I was able to get 14 patches made up. They sound good but they are done wrong- I borrowed the preset algorithms and turned a bunch of stuff off.

Here in a few days, I'll do the 20 Mhz upgrade. So I think I can say the issue is closed. Time will tell.

Thanks for all your input!
Now I can harras you all about this new fangled MIDI and MidiWizard software!
