LPC2138 Dev Board

LPC2138 Dev Board

2005-12-19 by Javeed Shariff

Hi All,
I'm interested in learing LPC2138 ARM device.
I need suggestion whether I've to purchase the
development board from IAR Systems or Signum Embedded
Store(online).

Also can I integrate any RTOS with this
Target Board or not?

Please let me know your valuable feedback..

Hi Javved,
This is a technical forum and your question is
revelant.
I highly respect your religious faith and I do not
intent to try to change any single thing of your
believes.

I am a christian Orthodox and your signature is highly
insalting to the God as I believe in Him, Jesus , the
birth of whom we ( the christians) are about to
celebrate next Sunday 25th December.

Please find a way to declare your personal religious
identity without provoking and insalting other people
religion.

Thank you.
Viron.

Hi Viron,
I swear that I never meant to hurt any body
with the signature that appends to every email that I
send..and I never recieved any comment on behalf of
that from any body...

If it is insulting u or any body like you..then God
forgive me...

I'll see that not to send such kind of signatures
before sending any email...

But still you did not answer to my technical question?

Regards
Javeed

As moderator, I don't see anything wrong with that signature (I'm a devout
atheist). Some people might find Happy Christmas offensive, which is why Mr
Bush hasn't got it on his Christmas cards.

Hi Javeed,

Also have a look at the boards from Emedded Artists
http://www.embeddedartists.com/. Good value for money IMO!

Cheers

I think both of these are good, and others like the Embedded Artists
board, the Tini2138, the Keil MCB2130, and some boards from Olimex.

But one thing that is very important should also be considered: the
JTAG device. Some use the Jlink, the Ulink, the Wiggler, etc. Once you
buy a development board you should probably buy the JTAG device that
comes from the same vendor, unless you already have a device.

The compiler tools should also be considered. Obviously, IAR has their
own tools (the 32K limited version is free), and Keil has theirs (the
16K limited version is free), and Olimex recommends the CrossWorks
tools from Rowley.

I think any of these tools can work with any JTAG device, and on any
of these boards, but you often find "bundles" that come with boards,
so you should look into this to know what comes with each board.

You frequently don't use an RTOS on an ARM7 device, but that is
possible, and many people do it.

I haven't tried this, but I understand FreeRTOS is an option.

There's even a flavor of linux that can run on an Arm7 (uLinux).

If you need a full-featured RTOS, you might be better off with an Arm9
device.

Yes. Implementing an RTOS on the LPC parts is very much a viable option.
I've worked with the following on the LPC2129 and LPC2148:

// commercial
1. Segger embOS - does not use FIQ or SWI, free real-time RTOS trace via
serial port, and IAR C-Spy plug-in. A clean easy to read API, that is well
documented. No additional cost per multiple products. They offer free
evaluation software that works. There are also some very helpful run-time
diagnostics.
2. Micrium uC/OS-II - real-time RTOS trace via serial port is additional
cost. A clean easy to read API, that is well documented. A fixed license
fee per individual product.
3. Salvo - Cooperative scheduling. Low cost.

IAR C-Spy plug-ins are available for embOS and uC/OS-II. Cost for uC/OS-II
plug-in is additional $$.

// open source
1. FreeRTOS - your app cannot use software interrupts. API and general
features are not nearly as evolved as the commercial offerings. Some
limited diagnostics.

My professional preference is Segger's embOS for the medium to large LPC
parts.

Is the Jlink and the Ulink also usable in a "clean" GCC + GDB
development environment?

Hi Ake,

Segger offers a free J-Link USB driver for VMWare. So if you're running GCC
+ GDB via VMWare, the J-Link is useable.

Yes it seems a bit round about. Perhaps it's meant to protect their
licensing scheme? I'm not sure. I asked about Linux support and the
response was - no plans to support Linux directly.

There is always Multi-ICE from arm.com, also the BDI2000 from Abatron.

Sorry for the late reply, but you can check out my page:

http://www.wackyland.net/arm7kits.html

for a list of some available dev kits.

Please, if anyone knows of any more, let me know. This is a pretty common
questions, and AFAIK there isn't any nice centralized list...

Searching google for "lpc2138 free rtos" or "lpc2100 rtos" or something
similar will turn up many rtoses available for this micro.

The wiggler is the most "open source friendly" option, but it uses a
parallel port.

I don't know much about the Ulink, but the Jlink does work with GNU
tools if you use the Windows Jlink Server program (free closed source
from Segger). I've heard that this works with gdb, but doesn't support
programming flash. You could use a serial ISP mode to program the
flash, but this is less convenient.

I don't know of any linux equivalent for the Jlink server, and I don't
know of any open source program of this nature.

Another great set of freeware tools for use with gcc is the Eclipse
IDE. Here's an excerpt from a message Jim Lynch posted here recently:

"I've just completed the latest revision of my ARM/Eclipse tutorial
and it may be downloaded from here:

http://www.olimex.com/dev/pdf/ARM%20Cross%20Development%20with%20Eclipse%20version%203.pdf

The sample source code may be downloaded from here:

http://www.olimex.com/dev/soft/arm/LPC/sourcecode.zip

This tutorial shows in great detail how to build and test a
completely free ARM software development system based on the GNU
tools and the Eclipse IDE platform."

I could be wrong, but I think they require their jlink server to run
on a Windows host, so they recommend using your linux tools in a VM so
they can talk to Windows. Or, is it vice-versa (linux host and Windows
VM)?

Anyway, VMware has come a long way in recent releases and it's now
much faster and less buggy. It makes a lot of sense if you need both
Windows and linux on the same computer, and at the same time.

The OpenOCD (openocd.berlios.de) I've working on for the last months supports
USB-JTAG devices based on the FTDI FT2232C. The DLP2232M evaluation module
comes with almost all the parts you need on a 40-pin 0.6in wide DIP socket.
If you want to keep it simple to build, a voltage regulator for 3.3V that
feeds the FT2232C IOA input would do. I've heard of several parties producing
more elaborate designs, so you could probably get one prebuilt, too. If
you're interested I could get you in contact with someone who produces such a
device.
OpenOCD isn't finished yet, but it's steadily improving and it comes licensed
under the GPL. I've put my working tree into the berlios subversion
repository, and I've used the current code just yesterday to test some things
on a LPC2294.

Kind regards,

Dominic

Re: LPC2138 Dev Board // list of available LPC2000 boards

2005-12-21 by lpc2100_fan

Hi Sean a few more that come to my mind:
1. Keil www.keil.com/boards/ has great eval boards packaged with their
compiler eval version.
2. Olimex has much more to offer than just the LPC2148 board (although
I like that one best from them).
3. www.ashling.com offers boards for LPC2106 and adapters for other
LPC2000
4. www.nohau.com offers a board for the LPC2106
5. The ARM patch www.thearmpatch.com/lpc-sbc2.html
6. A couple LPC2000 devices soldered on a DIP40 / DIP50 can be found
here: www.tinyarm.com/
7. Last but not least www.phytec.com for the LPC2294

For the LPC2000 family there is a comprehensive list of tools
including boards on the Philips website:

http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/products/microcontrollers/support/development_tools/tools_by_family/arm7tdmi/index.html

So, there is a list that is naturally biased on the Philips website.

Cheers, Bob

Hi Tom,

I would have loved any of them. To high cost for me at the moment I'm
afraid. I know they should't be, after all I live on this work, but
they still are. Probably have to learn to charge more from my
customers... ;-)

I have a Windows and a Linux development machine on my desk. Does this
mean that I can run the Windows Jlink Server program on my window box
but use the Linux box as my development environment? That would be
close to perfect. I prefer to do development on the Linux system but
have many customers which I write drivers etc for on the WIN32 system so
I will never get rid of that environment anyway.

Yes I checked it out and it looks really impressive. One thing put me of
and that is the magic it uses to locate the development tree. I probably
haven't found this out right but I never succeeded in having projects on
different locations on my disk It always force me into having the files
in its structure.

Hi Dominic,

Sounds very interesting! How far have you come in this development?
What remains to do? Maybe I could help on some development...

So any FT232x based ARM board would do for this? Is the board
requirements documented somewhere.

Currently, it's mostly testing and debugging - differents hosts, targets, jtag
interfaces. Stability and correctness are most important for a debugger, so
currently I'm writing small test cases, run them in target RAM, and see if
the state captured by the debugger is correct. What I'm interested in is
people trying the software, and reporting problems they've experienced -
development contributions are of course welcome, too.
What's currently missing is flash write support, but that's easy to add (for
the LPCs), and MMU/Cache support, which isn't necessary for LPCs.

No, FT2232C, not FT232. The FT2232C comes with a multi-protocol synchronous
serial engine that can be configured as a JTAG TAP master. The DLP2232M is an
evaluation module available from FTDI (www.ftdichip.com), it comes with the
chip, a USB connector, eeprom, crystal, i.e. all the supporting circuitry.
The FT2232C has two I/O channels which accept either 3.3V or 5V logic - USB
runs at 5V, so if you want to debug 3.3V targets you simply supply the chip
with 3.3V from a voltage regulator powered by the USB. My diploma thesis
(available at the project site openocd.berlios.de) contains schematics for a
very simple interface. I'll upload schematics for a more advanced design
within the next days.

Hi Dominic,

OK now I see. I will try this out also found your diploma thesis which
will be good reading for Christmas.

Cheers
