Upgrading the OS. No luck.

Upgrading the OS. No luck.

2005-11-03 by Ronald Pieket

Today I received my XL-7. Pretty good price with BIN on eBay: $350
with the Proteus Pop ROM installed.

Anyway. The OS is version 1.01. I see that there is a newer OS. So far
I haven't been having much luck with the upgrade. The "e-loader" I
found on the Emu website lauches OS9 Classic, and then fails to run. I
have an iBook with OS X 10.3.9. And I don't think there is any way to
reboot directly into OS9. I'm not even sure that my little MIDI
interface would work under OS9.

Any idea what I should try next? Is there an "e-loader" for OS X? Is
there an SMF for the OS upgrade? Is the OS upgrade worth all this trouble?

-Ron.

Bitterly curse at the powers that be and accept your fate. ;D

Sadly no. It is a Java program (I think), so in theory it could
probably be recompiled for Mac OS X, but it does not look like such a
thing will be happening any time soon. E-mu has moved on from the P2K/
Command Station hardware and is now an audio card / software synth
company.

> Is there an SMF for the OS upgrade?

No, that would have been a good idea though.

> Is the OS upgrade worth all this trouble?

YES. Version 2.0 is much better than 1.x - XMIX and the extra shift
functions are very useful.

The safest bet is to find a friend (easy) with a Windows computer
(still easy) that has a MIDI interface (harder) and is willing to
install E-Loader on their system and help you update the OS. I would
convince said friend that this is a one-time deal and they can de-
install the software as soon as you are done.

The Command Station is such a magnificent piece of gear that I think
if one is basing their performance setup on the Command Station, it is
useful to have a small, low-power, inexpensive PC or Mac OS9.xx
machine (imac or ibook) if for nothing else, just for eloader. You
could purchase a $150 imac and a $40 MIDI interface and you would be
all set.

Alternatelively, if one is a mac-only person, maybe the most expansive
and forward-looking choice would be to begin dabbling in XP (add it to
your arsenal). I think I see less problems there than I do in OSX for
pro audio apps.

Buying a new (and outdated) computer for a once-only operation seems
like a last resort option.

I see that the Windows version of eloader works over USB. My computer
at work has a USB port, so I'll try that. I'm not seeing any OS
requirement info - does eloader work under XP?

eloader does work via USB, but only for transfering patterns and such..
(i.e. backups)

the OS upgrade only works via a midi-connection

it's been a while since i upgraded my mp-7 but that was the case back
then and they haven't changed anything

Drat. You know, don't fix what ain't broke. The thing is working, so I
see no reason to tinker with the OS. I'll leave it at 1.01.

If, at any time, I hit a bug and need to upgrade after all, will the
upgrade process keep my work, or erase everything?

I'd really update the OS. 2.0's got some really cool stuff, and it's
more stable. If you've got a PC at work, I'd go to a music store and
pick up a 1x1 USB MIDI adapter. They're cheap, and you can probably
use it on your mac when you're done at work. You could even return it
the next day.

The upgrade will work on XP and will leave all your data intact. Note
that since you have 1.01, you'll need to download commandprep first.

Whichever route you go Ron, this is not a once-only operation, it is
THE way to save your XL& work. I use eloader several times per week.
Once I had the misfortune losing a killer Seq set that I had created
(due to user error, working while exhausted). Luckily, I had it backed
up in eloader and in no time ~viola~ I had my sequence back.

From the eloader readme file:

"One of the primary reasons E-Loader was developed using Java is
because it is especially helpful in developing applications that must
run on multiple operating systems."

This paragraph made me roll my eyes, after having so much trouble
getting this thing to run on my operating system. Grr.

Nice, but I'm not going to fill my home with computer hardware. It's
ugly, messy, too work-like, bad chi. I will make the occasional back
up using a sysex dump via regular midi.

Yes, an UNDO function would be nice. Was someone taking suggestions
for a new OS?

Finally, success!

I had an old (as in 1998, pre-USB) and forgotten Powerbook G3 sitting
in the back of a closet with OS9 on it. I even had the modem<=>midi
box with it. Better still, it had eloader installed already - I once
owned a Vintage Pro. Minutes later I had my XL7 upgraded to v2.00.
That is the latest (and presumably last) version, right?

I finally spent a couple of hours playing with my new XL7. Wow this is
easy to work with. Toggle record and playback, switch tracks, change
presets, enable/disable quantization, all without stopping the
sequencer or missing a beat. What a luxury!

And thanks for the help, everyone.
