Apart from "giveio" (which you must): using avrdude, did you find an entry for the programmer in the file "avrdude.conf"? If not, you'll have to add an entry, you may have to reverse engineer (if you don't have the info) which parallel pin goes to which AVR pin (MISO, MOSI, etc),
